Lack of communication

Christopher_D, Jul 2025
Communication with Joker Expedition was none existing. We tried reaching out to them numerous times but all answers were given either as “yes “ or “no” even though our questions were not simple yes or no questions. E.g we asked if they had a packing list and how we could expect the hostels to be at night, and the only answer to this was “yes”. We tried reaching out in Spanish instead with more questions, but we never received an answer. This lack of communication continued throughout our trip. We were picked up from the hotel from a Joker Expedition employee who made sure that we arrived in the bus station in La Paz. On the information page it states that the bus leaves La Paz at 20:30 but it actually leaves at 21:30. Also, they said that we would get dinner onboard of the bus, but this turned out only to be a water and a small packet of crackers. Had we known this, we would have gotten dinner beforehand so we wouldn’t go to sleep hungry! When we arrived in Uyuni we were picked up by a person and driven to a hotel to be checked in for a couple of hours. This information was not provided anywhere, which is weird since it is nice to get a hot shower and breakfast. And none of the drivers we met spoke English, so no one could inform us where they were taking us and what the next step was. Furthermore, on the information page it says to bring 200 BOBS per person. However, when we got picked up by our tour guide and were on the way to the salt flats, he told us that we needed to bring at least 300 BOBS per person since toilets were not free. None of places we went to took credit cards and there were no ATMs at any of our stops. We were also informed on the first day that the second night was going to be cold, and that you are able to rent a sleeping bag which cost 50 BOBS per person. This could only be paid in cash, but since we were misinformed about the amount to bring, we didn’t have enough money to rent sleeping bags. They also said that we could pay for the sleeping bags at the second stop, which everyone on the tour understood as the second place where we are going to sleep at, but it was the second stop the first day (I don’t know if that really helps, because there is no time to go to an ATM). In addition to this, the second place we stayed at didn’t have enough food for dinner either, so we ended going to bed hungry. With that said, the tour is fantastic and you get to see a lot of different beautiful sights, but we would not recommend booking through Joker Expedition since the none existing communication meant that we weren’t able to fully enjoy our trip.

Get closer to the sun but don’t forget toilet paper.

This tour is a must but there are somethings you have to know before you go. Listed below are some of them. 1. Do not do this tour right off the plane or bus. The altitude is no joke. Give yourself a few days in it to acclimate. 2. If you don’t like rustic conditions this is not for you. The sleeping arrangements are basic and you will go one night without a shower. Which the tour operators won’t tell you. Also bring a towel and extra toilet paper. 3. The sights are simply spectacular! One of the most unique environments on the planet. Our tour guide Beymare was excellent! Knew all the ins and out of the area and we were often first to see the sights. 4. Getting here is not easy. An overnight bus ride is what it takes but the buses are extremely comfortable. But the bathrooms have a strict no poop policy on board. Eat lightly. 5. The sun is no joke. Sunscreen if you don’t like a tan or being burned. 6. It is remote so while I suggest packing as light as you can make sure you have some medicines on you. 7. The car is a Toyota Land Cruiser and the tour outfits will pack them. The backseat is not comfortable at all. We rotated through to be fair to everyone but your knees and back will be sore. Pro tip- if you’re going to Chile at the end and not back to Uni, choose to sit in the back the 3rd day. 8. Most bathrooms you have to pay for so bring change. The last place we stayed at had nice rooms but public toilets that were disgusting with poop and vomit, at least in the men’s bathroom. The private rooms have bathrooms but for some reason they won’t let you use them. I imagine there is a fee. My suggestion is carry a metal credit card or small knife. You can’t take the hint. 9. In spite of all of this you have to see this area. The guide makes it breaks this tour and it seems all of them know what to do. So you will be good to go.

Fantastic experience with nice extra touches

E_P, Apr 2019
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in the Salt Flats. There are hundreds of companies which offer tours but we were the only group on that day with a jeep which could actually cross the flats in the wet season, so we got some incredible photos and a stunning sunset. This tour is more expensive than some but included first class bus travel, a hotel room to shower in before and after the trip in Uyuni and a glass (or two!) of wine both evenings. The guide was very knowledgeable and went out of his way to get the best photos for us. I got unwell during the trip and they took good care of me until I got back to Uyuni. I had an amazing experience and would definitely recommend this company.
