Good tour but unprofessional tour organizer.

The experience itself was very good because our Driver Dhanu was great. The organizing Tour group on the other hand never confirmed or answered my calls. It was a very frustrating not knowing if I had been scammed $500. The Viator help line was also disappointing because the agent basically told me I needed to keep calling the Tour company and wait until the morning. I was finally provided confirmation that our tour was happening about an hour prior to the start time. We were relieved to have a driver show up and after enquiring- he had been hired the night before. Very unprofessional tour company. I feel we got lucky and had Dhanu as our driver and our group of 4 really enjoyed the experience of Kyoto. I recommend the tour but not the Tour Organizer.

Our tour began with pickup at our hotel and our guide told us the places he would be taking us. As the day got started, he did not go out of his way to tell us anything about the history of Kyoto or even the Shrines that we were visiting. Very disengaged and uninterested. He was more of a driver for the day than a guide. Very disappointing and not worth the $$$ that we spent for a unique day. We could have hired a taxi or uber and gotten the same result for much less. Not a great experience at all.

Great day tour of Kyoto

Our guide Malik was professional, polite, and prompt. We appreciated his flexibility and help accommodating a family member with limited mobility. Malik was friendly while walking through the Bamboo Forrest, Gion, and Fushimi Inari — he made our visits efficient by guiding us along the way. Malik shared some of the history of the sites visited and was able to answer our questions in the moment. Lastly we want to thank Malik for his excellent lunch recommendation, the gyoza place we went was delicious!!

We had an absolutely exceptional private tour of Kyoto — truly a five-star, luxury experience and one of the highlights of our entire Japan trip. Our guide, Sam, was incredibly personable, warm, and knowledgeable, and went out of his way to make sure every part of the day was perfect for us. We visited Fushimi Inari, the bamboo forest, Arashiyama, and the stunning Kinkakuji Temple — which was made even more magical by the fact that it was snowing when we were there. I was unforgettable and felt like something out of a postcard. Everything was seamless, relaxed, and beautifully paced. Sam tailored the day to our interests, shared fascinating stories and history, and made sure we were comfortable and enjoying every moment. This tour felt truly special and exclusive, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide or experience. Highly, highly recommended this tour

Great way to spend 1 day

Terrible Tour and Awful Customer Service from Viator

This tour was awful from start to finish. The guide picked us up in a car that was very uncomfortable for 4 people and it smelled terrible. He hardly spoke any English, didn’t know any Japanese and has only lived in Japan for a year. He spoke about 20 words total to us the entire day, including telling us that he thinks ‘Japanese people are boring’. All of our other tours in Japan have been fantastic so this was extremely disappointing to say the least. We requested a refund through the travel company as well as Viator and were very unhappy with their response. Really bad customer service on Viator’s part as well—will think twice before using this company again.

We strongly disagree with the statements made in this review and believe it is misleading. Our driver provided the service exactly as described. The vehicle used was a Honda Odyssey 8-seater, which is a clean, well-maintained, and commonly used vehicle for private tours in Japan. At no point was any issue raised during the tour regarding the vehicle condition. The driver/guide speaks both English and Japanese fluently and has been living in Japan since 2019, not “for one year” as claimed. He communicated throughout the day and safely escorted the guests to all requested locations, completing the itinerary as booked. After the tour, despite the service being fully delivered, the guest demanded a full refund. As a goodwill gesture, we offered a 50% refund, which they refused, insisting on a full refund instead. This is not reasonable, especially when the tour was completed in full. We take feedback seriously, but we do not accept false accusations or exaggerated claims made solely to obtain a refund. We have clear evidence and records supporting the service provided. Our many genuine 5-star reviews reflect the true quality of our tours. We remain committed to providing honest, professional, and reliable service to all guests.

Not a "tour" - driver for the day

This isn't a tour at all, the driver came with us to only one place, didn't join anything else, we paid for our own entrance tickets everywhere and toured as we would, alone. Definitely misleading, I could have taken an uber everywhere for a fraction of the price and it would be a much better car.

We booked this tour based on the multiple 5 star reviews shared. Unfortunately, our experience was not like those in the reviews. Our driver brought our group to the locations listed in the description, however we were not able to customize it. He dropped us off and left the area. We needed to text him to pick us up and had to wait (in the rain) for him to arrive. He would give us a brief answer when we asked a question, however he did not act as a guide, he didnt share any information. He was nothing more than a taxi driver. Very disappointed.

Dhanou was our driver for the day and laid out an itinerary to see the best of Kyoto in a day. My husband, 2 sons and I really enjoyed the sites and got to learn about what we were seeing and soak in the beauty of Kyoto. I liked that we got to explore some of the sites on our own; Dhanou walked with us on other sites and got the greatest family photos for us. Recommend, especially if you want to get the major sites seen in a day!

No recommend, you can do it in your own for less. The driver, excellent, respectful. But his planning for the day was very poor, he doesn't have to much knowledge about the places or the history. We were late to one of the exhibitions, it was close already. He was supposed to know that we were running late. Even we skept the market visit.

Our family of six adults, with three men who are above six feet in height, fit nicely into the large minivan provided by the tour company. Our guide was polite and helpful, but not too chatty. We communicated on WhatsApp to coordinate all the drop offs/picks ups. They provide a standard itinerary but you can make changes if needed, just be sure to let them know early enough. The experience was great for getting us close to all the attractions and seeing all the best sites around the city. We only had one full day here, and this was a great option for exploring in comfort.

Kyoto for the historical buff

Asha is a very patient tour guide. He knows the places to go. He would lead us to the ticket booth and let us explore the place by ourselves. I wish he accompanied us all the way and explain the nuances of the place. But he is not a native Japanese so he may not be as familiar with the history so I have to give him a pass on that. We asked to cut the tour shot so we can get back to Tokyo early. But we were stuck able to see a lot of Kyoto in a short time.
