Itinerary

Your friendly guide and professional driver will meet you at your hotel for this Kuala Selangor Tour from Kuala Lumpur with fireflies boat ride and seafood dinner. Travel by bus northeast of the city to Kuala Selangor. Once the royal capital of the state and home to Kampung Kuantan, this destination is home to one of the world’s largest firefly colonies.

Upon arrival, make your way to Kota Melawati near the mouth of the Selangor River. Venture into the ruins of this ancient fort with your guide and learn about the cannons and other remnants from the 1900s. You’ll also tour the Royal Mausoleum where graves of the first three Sultans of Selangor are buried. Climb the 100 stairs to the top of Selangor Hill and learn about the much-storied execution block.

After that, head to Kuala Selangor Nature Park and gaze up at migratory birds. Keep your eyes peeled for silver-leaf monkeys, rare butterflies and indigenous birds. As the sun sets you’ll head to a nearby fishing village for a typical seafood dinner before making your way to Kampung Kuantan. Set sail on a Malaysian rowboat and take in the quiet beauty that surrounds you as your oarsman rows upstream through picturesque mangroves. Once darkness falls you’ll bear witness to thousands of sparkling fireflies. Your magical boat ride will last between 30 and 45 minutes. Upon completion you’ll head to shore and make your way back to your Kuala Lumpur hotel in the comfort of your air-conditioned vehicle.

Outstanding. Everything we expected and more.

Firstly, we had an excellent driver who was really friendly and knowledgeable about many things. We really enjoyed travelling with him. All parts of the trip were fabulous from walking along the mango swamps to seeing the fireflies. The boatman placed a firefly in my wife's hand and she was delighted. We really could not recommend this trip more, or this driver, or this company. From the pick up to the drop off, it was fabulous.

Review of Tour Fireflies Boat Ride and Seafood Dinner

MarieVeronique_B, May 2019
The driver was on time to collect us at the hotel. The drive from KL to the Fireflies is very long at least one hour, it was a bit boring as we were on the motorway. The dinner was interesting. The Fireflies were beautiful.

Great day with an awesome guide

Andyroobob, Jul 2018
BK our guide picked us up on time from the hotel in a small air conditioned van and kept us entertained and informed with facts and knowledge about KL, Malaysia and surrounding countries. First stop was an Indian temple which was very impressive craftmanship, then to the monkeys on the hill which was the best part, they were so numerous, docile, friendly and climbing up on our heads. There was also a nice view from the hill. After that we went for the tasty seafood dinner by a river and then continued on to the fireflies. We had to queue about 40 minutes for the sun to set and get on the boat as expected but we saw many twinkling xmas tree like bushes which was a great experience. The whole day was nice, but it was made fantastic by the tour guide BK, highly recommend him!

Great tour, lovey driver and lovely experience. Really enjoyed this trip and the river was so calming and quiet. Little shop for gifts as well. Highly recommend this tour!

The fireflies boat tour only went for about twenty minutes would have been good if it was longer. Dinner was poor, certainly not a buffet more like four dishes put on the table which you could select from. Compared to the large menu items at the restaurant youre given whats clearly the cheapest options designed to feed the most for the least dollars. For the price paid for the tour was definitely expecting more for dinner

This tour was also great. The guide was friendly and very accommodating. The only think I would change is the bush walk due to the amount of mosquitoes.

The dinner was meh. Our guide who we had before was a bit rude and wanted to up sell the group on everything. I've been to Asia several times now and I get this is part of the business that tours and shops run together, but this guy put SO much pressure on us to purchase other stuff that it ruined the experience. The fireflies and boat was pretty, but I wish we had just taken an uber.

This trip is a great trip out of the city , the tour van was not very good I could hardly see out of the window and had to duck my head to look out, the tour guide was not that great and did not explain what was happening with our tour and stops , we would be at a place and not really know where we were and what we were doing . Plenty of monkeys , two kinds . Fireflies and boat trip was great but very short . Fireflies only come out if it is not raining , they dont tell you that , we were lucky

For all of our tours we were thinking of having booked with different agencies. Finally all travelers were picked up by their hotels and gathered in the touristic office. There we were split to different buses based on the destination and all of the times we were served by tour51 even though none of our bookings were with this agency. So my proposal is choose the cheapest and just be lucky to have a good guide! Our guide in this tour was not good at all. She seemed tired and not happy to be there and share info with us, in contrast with other guides we had in other tours. However tour is very nice and theme is fascinating.

This was the best of our adventures in KL. The photos and videos we took would not do justice to the sight we had. The driver was great - good English and a good sense of humour mixed with excellent knowledge of the surroundings. The dinner was plentiful and a lot better than I expected after reading some of these reviews here - so at the very least they have improved their service. We travelled as family of 6 with wife, adult kids and a partner. We all agree this was the best of our holidays.

Margaret V, Feb 2017
Although the rep was lovely this tour lacked loads. The monkeys were funny, the sumptuous meal was awful could have been much bettter was a very poor meal on a very smelly river bank, badly presented no taste whatsoever. If possible hire a taxi and just do the fireflies, very magical and worth doing, the rest of the trip time wasted.

Clair O, Jan 2017
The guide/driver was informative and pleasant but the vehicle was a bit old and not in really good condition. The 1st stop was the interaction with the monkeys who live on the side of the road.. it was fun but a bit strange wondering around the road . The sea food dinner was not great and the time spent there could have been a bit shorter. Unfortunately for us it rained so not ideal conditions but we saw some fireflies anyway. The actual boat ride to the mangroves and around them was very short.. too quick. It seemed like they wanted to get as many people in and out of the reserve area as possible. Maybe the rain had something to do with it but I don't think so. Seeing the Flireflies was a magical experience so although conditions weren't good it was a worthwhile experience

The river cruise to see the fireflies was an interesting experience. Also the silver-leaf monkeys were fantastic. The seafood was not to our expectations. If you are not an amateur of Chinese food you will find that the selected restaurant is not amazing at all

Its quite a long day out from Kuala Lumpur for about 20 minutes on the water looking at the fireflies. The fireflies light show is really worth seeing but the rest of the trip is quite forgettable. The lighthouse stop feels a bit like a tourist trap. Tour would be improved by leaving later in the day and allowing longer on the water with the fireflies.

Another amazing tour. This was a shared tour where we met gorgeous people from around the world. The experience of feeding and having a monkey sit on my shoulder will stay with me forever. What an amazing day! And then the serenity of the night in a boat looking at the wonders of fireflies. Amazing

Terrible. Would not recommend it...

Yeojin_Y, Sep 2016
Terrible. Would not recommend it. The highlight of the tour, fireflies boat ride, is only about 20 minutes and even that is spoiled by hundreds of other tourists popping camera flash despite advice against it. The queue to get into the boat took much longer than the boat ride itself. You do get to see the fireflies, but they are mostly sitting in the trees so what you see is trees lit up like Christmas trees, nothing more. The rest of the 8 hours is spent on driving, standing in queues from tram ride up the hill why is it even included in the tour? Nothing to see on the hilltop except for stray monkeys, killing time at the fishing village nothing to see either - we were strongly nudged to pay for a separate eagle tour which is just another boat ride to spot far-flying eagles and a bad dinner. Worst food - compared to what other individual diners were eating, what we got was the blandest and least fresh food offered at the restaurant. Very disappointed. Id expect much more.

Sharon_N, Sep 2016
This was such a disappointment. No one picked us up at hotel despite confirming with number provided. After an hour I had to phone and was told some one would come. 20 mins later a Chinese man came with a minibus. My friend and I were the only one's on the bus. 1.5 hrs to get out of KL - but it was Ramadan and nobody's fault. Monkeys at first stop were quite aggressive . Back down hill - driver did not stop at burial grounds - had to ask to go back. Then took us to a pretty dirty chinese restaurant on bank of river - seafood was very disappointing - prawns were small and dried up. Whilst clearing the table next to us after a large chinese family - the boy threw a dirty nappy that had been left on table into the water. onto the fireflies - long wait in long queue for ticket office to be manned - again Ramadan so to be expected. Loaded into rickety boats and ferried out en masse - lots of rubbish and debris floating by couldn't help but wonder if it contained the nappy - short trip around bushes that contained fireflies but was pretty underwhelming.

A great experience - we could have done without the dinner and trip to the monument for the sake of saving time - the driver was over an hour late collecting us - annoying when you are only in KL for a short time.

Overall, we enjoyed the tour. We could have done without the pewter factory tour and spent more time with the monkeys in Melawati. Dinner was good, and the fireflies were AMAZING! The tour guide and bus driver were nice, knowledgeable and accommodating. We were lucky the rain stopped in time!

Probably a little overhyped tour...

Pranab P, Jul 2016
Probably a little overhyped tour. Coming from a tropical country where such sights are seen in the countryside, I had expected much more. The ruins of the fort of Bukit Melawati aren't all that awesome as other forts and castles around the world, but yes, it's part of Malaysia's history and heritage. The view of the Strait of Mallaca is great from the hilltop, but there are far grander views at different locales round the world. From there on one moves to a quaint fishing village. If one arrives early, one can contemplate taking a speedboat ride to the mouth of the Selangor river to see eagles being fed the boatsman throws feed into the waters and eagles swoop down and pick them up with their talons. Again travelers from countries where eagles aren't common might be fascinated by this. Dinner at the village comes in early at around 6:30pm. The food though is good. The dining area is neat, clean and hygienic. The people there are simple and very courteous. The sight of the sun setting over the Strait of Mallaca is quite colorful. Eat, stretch back and relax. From there on we moved to the mangroves, a short drive from the village. Boarding onto to the boats is just after darkness, and as the oarsman quietly rows along the bank, we could see thousands of fireflies 'twinkling' in the trees. Fascinating for travelers who do not hail from tropical countries, and even for those who have never been to the countryside in those regions. It's indeed a very commendable effort of the Government of Malaysia, environmentalists and the local inhabitants to have restored the ecosystem and the story of their efforts on illuminated boards on the boarding pier makes for interesting reading. Worth taking this trip if one wants to see fireflies, but honestly I wouldn't have missed much had I skipped this tour on my visit.
