Itinerary

Begin with pickup at your Kuala Lumpur hotel, or at the Malaysia Tourist Centre, then travel to Kuala Selangor. Take a break along the way to see Fort Altingsburg at Bukit Melawati, where you get views of a hilltop lighthouse, and see a thriving population of silvered leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, and tropical birds.

Visit a nearby fishing village for a Malaysian-style seafood buffet, then continue to Kampung Kuantan, a launch point on the Selangor River. Travel along the river in a quiet, eco-friendly rowboat so you don’t disturb the fireflies, or kelip-kelip, and watch them glow in the evening air. Discover the fireflies’ mysterious synchronicity: though each firefly flashes at its own rhythm, the lights slowly align until thousands of bugs light up in unison, and coastal Malaysia is considered the best place in the world to see the phenomenon.

Amazing tour due to Rajan being a very friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide. Raman pointed out and explained so much on the drive, then gave us lots of options to maximize our experience. A highlight was definitely feeding the friendly monkeys, which Rajan ensured we were safe, bought us food for the monkeys and even took lots of photos so we could enjoy the experience. The dinner was lovely in a local seafood restaurant overlooking the river, and the Fire Flies were very special (albeit on a short time to see them) to see after a quick river cruise. A huge thanks to Rajan who made sure we were informed, comfortable and happy the entire time. Highly recommend booking and requesting Rajan.

If raja is your driver, he’s nice, but he’s a hustler. Our tour did not include the Batu caves but he offered to taus there anyway. He said I had to have a shawl to cover my shoulders and took us to a shop where they made and sold shawls. They were very expensive and you felt pressured to buy. When we got to the caves there were so many ladies with tank top shirts. I did not need to purchase a shawl, he just hustled us for a sale. The stairs leading to the caves were filthy. Smelled like feces. I didn’t want to touch the rails but it was so steep, you had to. Monkeys were grabbing bags. If you need ruse the restroom there they charge for the toilet paper and the use of the toilet. After that we did see monkeys. If you buy food they will jump on you, scratch and possibly bite. Then when we got to the firefly excursion raja once again tried to get us to buy tkts to see eagles which we did not care to see. The fireflies were dumb. It was a quick boat ride out in mosquito infested waters to see tiny little light bugs. The pictures of the excursion showed a boat with food, but the food was not included. Probably best you don’t eat there. The next day my husband came down with a stomach bug or I’m afraid maybe a monkey bit him. He was trembling and has fever. Raja offered to take us on a private drive the next day and wanted to charge us more than what the app was asking.

Great excursion. The temple is very beautiful to see. The lighthouse and the area with the monkeys are mostly an attraction for tourists but it doesn't leave any great memories. For the boat trip I highly recommend the choice with the eagles, while the fireflies and the blue water are a bit disappointing. The guide did his job sufficiently

While our tour guide Fauzi was nice and knowledgeable the trip was very disappointing. We were the only ones on the tour. The temple was nice but it was closed. Pretty picture taking spot. The monkeys were cute and fun to watch. We were then driven to restaurant. The food was awful. No choices!!!! The cutlery was placed in a dirty bowl with hot water and placed on the table. We were given fried rice which was luke warm, soggy vegetables, some sort of chicken dish and something with prawns. We asked for water to drink which required a discussion among the wait staff before it was provided. Our tour guide said to “take our time” with dinner. We sat at the dirty restaurant for over 2 hours before our tour guide retrieved us. We were then taken to a boat dock and waited another thirty minutes for the boat with hordes of other people. Boat ride was not narrated, driver who had cigarette in his hand said not a word. Fireflies underwhelming.

The driver was very good - was essentially a private tour as only two of us - traffic was horrendous and heavy rain making journey very long Temple was beautiful and as we were late saw a ceremony - still raining though / taking shoes off in pouring rain slightly precarious on marble floors 🤣 The firefly trip was slightly disappointing - very few fire flies but they were there - the boat trip to see the plankton was in my opinion bad - the idea of sone people thrashing the water with nets is environmentally not on - they are destroying the plankton and really this should be discouraged and as the weather had been bad they was very little to see -leave nature to its devices The meal after was very good and very traditional It was good to do the trip but was a long way and in hindsight would have done a different trip

I wanted to share my recent experience from the firefly-watching trip my partner and I took to Kuala Selangor on May 1st, 2024. Despite the stormy weather, we decided to embark on this adventure with high hopes. While the rain made the boat ride a bit challenging, we still managed to catch a glimpse of a few fireflies illuminating the mangroves. However, one aspect of the trip left us feeling conflicted. At one point, our boat driver unexpectedly approached the mangrove and caught some fireflies using a net. As advocates for environmental preservation, this action saddened us, especially considering the declining population of fireflies in Malaysia due to habitat loss. While we understood that the driver might have had good intentions, we couldn't help but feel disheartened by the disregard for the delicate ecosystem we had hoped to observe and appreciate. Furthermore, the decision not to release the fireflies back into their natural habitat only compounded our disappointment. Despite this, the trip overall was an eye-opening experience, and it served as a reminder of the importance of responsible ecotourism practices. I hope that by sharing this experience, we can all reflect on the impact of our actions on the environment and strive to make more responsible choices in the future.

The trip is quite good, but I do not prefer to book it with dinner... because dinner is not worth the amount paid and also does not taste good... I enjoyed the trip, but I will not repeat the dinner experience again.

I liked the good...

I liked the good organization of the tour. I really liked the guide, very professional. They are taking you to see an Indian temple, which is extremely beautiful, then to feed the monkeys, they are funny, and then to the river of fireflies. There are still few fireflies and they sit on the bushes. Then they additionally offer to look at the "blue water", do not agree, there is no blue water there.

Disappointing tour

Poorly organised tour, were taken to a temple and to see monkeys, no commentary along the way, no idea of any significance of the locations. The dinner was not organised until we arrived at a row of restaurants, we were the only ones on our tour bus that had paid for a dinner so the driver organised a meal for us. The seafood dinner was awful, just some fried rice, 4 prawns deep fried and two small pieces of fish in sweet and sour sauce, served with some vegetables, was not a seafood dinner, unlike any of the meals around us and very disappointing. The group were then ready for the boat ride, again the driver organised something for the group as we arrived and we waited for a boat, the fireflies were scarce, it was way too early or they just aren't as prevalent as described. All up, a disappointing and disorganised tour, wouldn't recommend at all. Paid a premium for something that wasn't worth it.

A Tour That is Much More Than Just Fireflies

Wonderful tour that was much more than just fireflies. We visited several Temples, went to an scenic lookout over the Melaka Straits, fed some monkeys, and had a very tasty seafood dinner. We did wait awhile for our firefly boat, but then later learned that its advantageous to go later since there are less other boats in the area. The fireflies were very interesting as we had never seen them before so it was all new to us. In all, this is a very worthwhile tour to take.

Rabies vaccination not included

I would give this ZERO stars if I could. Please read #3. 1. When deciding on if this tour is worth your time and money, consider that the actual firefly sighting is about 15 minutes during this SIX HOUR TOUR. 2. The other time is filled with some excursions not described by the vendor. They encourage you to stop at a Hindu temple that supposedly opens at 5. After waiting for 20-30 minutes, the driver says that maybe they will open at 5:30. We politely but firmly asked to leave, as we didn’t want to wait around to see when they would open. 3. Instead of offering to see Malawati Hill (historical and cultural site) the driver took us to see some monkeys being fed by a guy on a motorbike. My partner GOT BIT BY A MONKEY. They tell you that the silver leaf monkeys are tamer than the macaques. But any monkey WILL STILL BITE YOU. Medical treatment from a monkey bite requires multiple rabies vaccinations, a tetanus vaccination, antibiotics, Herpes B antivirals, and a rabies immunoglobulin shot. All of this requires 4 visit to the ER over 2 weeks and approximately $3,000 USD. While rabies is entirely treatable, the driver/ guide tried to downplay the seriousness of the bite. 4. After getting bit by a monkey, the driver asked if we wanted to see an eagle feeding or something. We declined to see another carnivorous animal on the “firefly tour.” Instead we asked to go to a pharmacy to triage the monkey bite wound. 5. The entire tour is about 3 hours of driving roundtrip (pickup from Bukit Bintang). Given the driving time, and the boat “tour” is about 40-50 minutes, this could easily be a 4 hour tour, but instead is filled with other stops along the way. The boat tour is a driver with about 20-30 tourists. The driver does not speak, or narrate. He drives about 15 minutes down river. You stop for about 10-15 minutes, then drive back to the dock. That’s it. After the boat tour, on our way back to the city, we asked the driver to drop us off at the ER. That should sum up how our experience was of this tour.

Bad experience

Not worth it. Fireflies were very scattered not very exciting to see. Picture a looking at a bb ch if Christmas trees in total darkness and you have a few single Christmas lights scattered. That’s what you paid to see. The Blue Tears tour is even worse. The boat drive to high wave sea, water pouring in. Tour operator did not say a single word. Just pass around a tiny net on a stick. No one had a clue what to do or to expect. The water is very muddy and dark in waves, cannot see a thing. Apparently, with 40+ people trying, a couple may actually “caught” a tiny piece of the algae that reflect a little blue light. Very bad tour operator. Total ripoff.

Tour ran quite late, but KL traffic was its usual chaos so bear that in mind. Daughter loved seeing the fireflies and blue tears. Would probably skip the meal inclusion though and just order yourself. Food was good though and plentiful. Our driver didn't give food for the monkeys, which I'm glad for, the silver leaf not so much, but the macaques are a bit annoying and needed to scare them off a few times when they thought the phone was food.

Good destination, but pick another provider

Overall score: 3 We were ambivalent about this tour. The firefly boat tour itself was amazing - a unique outing. We were also upsold to the "eagle feeding" sunset boat trip (approx $10/person additional), which was amazing and well worthwhile. Seeing the monkeys at Fort Altingsburg was very cool, although we were uncomfortable feeding the monkeys as urged by the driver given the presence of a large "do not feed the monkeys" sign. However, the "seafood buffet" was the driver's selection of items from the menu (tailored to our food preferences), and the quality was fair, comparable to an ordinary neighborhood Chinese restaurant in the US. The driver had a heavy accent making him difficult to understand. And while he was friendly and clearly knowledgeable, almost every comment was focused on money - whether the cost of living, the cost of his daughter's wedding, the incremental cost of the eagle feeding outing, the average salary, etc. He told us several times that he had never been on some of the outings (e.g., to see the eagle feeding or to go to the top of the Petronas Tower) because of the cost. All of which felt like he was demanding a large tip. Maybe we were just unlucky with the driver (presumably the company has others doing this trip too), but I'd be inclined to pick a different provider.

Fantastic tour with Rajan

My experience on the Kuala Selangor Firefly Boat Tour was truly exceptional. Rajan, our driver and tour guide, was outstanding and incredibly knowledgeable, enhancing the entire experience. The fireflies themselves were a unique and mesmerizing spectacle. I highly recommend adding the blue tears and eagle feeding options; they added even more value to the tour. Dinner at the fishing village before the firefly boat ride was a definite highlight; the fresh and delicious food was our favorite of the trip. The temple and monkey feeding stop, before reaching the fishing village was a fantastic part of the tour.

We enjoyed this very much. We were given the option to add on Eagle feeding and "Blue tears" bioluminescent plankton, which we did. The boat ride was peaceful and when it looked as though the boat would be too crowded they laid on a second boat. There were lots of fireflies and it was quite hypnotic watching them winking away. The Eagle feeding was spectacular....I expected 2 or 3, there must have been at least a hundred. The blue tears were nowhere near as good as the (photoshopped?) pictures used to advertise it but was still interesting to see.

Our trip was excellent. Our visit to the monkeys was most enjoyable. I think the monkeys were the best mannered monkeys in Malasia. WE paid extra to see the glowing algae and it was worth the experience. Our driver was very informative.

Good trip but not quite as advertised

Nice guide and overall good trip, worth doing, however we ended up waiting for 40 mins to be picked up (4:15 when we were collected from our hotel). We then only had time to visit the temple (which is beautiful) and feed the monkeys (fantastic) before heading straight to the firefly area - we did not get to see the other stops as advertised (lighthouse etc).

The driver we had was fantastic. Very helpful kind and generous person also. Make sure you take some cash with you as not all places there have card facilities.

Over-hyped disappointment

The fireflies were extremely over hyped. It was a long boat 'race' with lots of others getting to the river bank sites. The firefly lights were in the trees amongst the leaves, and were small and not too dense. About ten minutes searching and looking and that was it. The 'glowing blue water' was a bigger disappointment. Despite the pictures in the ads of glowing water, you were given a small net on a stick to wave in the water. Someone out would create a glow for a few seconds, sometimes not. It was not at all as expected. The so at the temple was OK, but no natrative or information given. The best was probably the monkey stop, as they were plenty up close. The optional dinner was fine, though.

Our tour was wonderful due to having a great tour host faizal. He made all our stops come alive and made sure that all details for dinner and firefly trip were seamless. Wonderful experience
