When you’re in the heart of the Swedish Lapland, don’t just book a reindeer sleigh ride, get an insight into the life of a reindeer herder instead. A unique opportunity to live some Sámi culture for a day, the tour is guided by a professional reindeer herder who shows you how to drive, feed, and look after the reindeer. Numbers are limited to just eight people per group.

WE DO NOT PICK UP AT INDIVIDUAL HOTELS OR LOCATIONS! We ONLY pick you up from the SELECTED pick up point on your booking. Be ready for pickup at 8.20 AM in your hotel in Kiruna or in Tourist information Kiruna Swedish Lapland in the foyer or at the exit of the hotel. We pick up between 8.20-8.40 AM depending on which hotel you are at. Pick-up at the Icehotel and Camp Alta about 9.00 AM. We call if there's anything. We had a fantastic time with Frederik, the Sámi herder. We shared his daily activities with the reindeer herd, and we learnt to ride a sledge. It was a lot of adrenaline and an unforgettable experience! Frederik also supplied us with a lot of interesting information about the Sámi life, and about the reindeer and their relationship with the environment.

This experience is more than just reindeer sledding. You learn about Sami culture and you get to meet lots and lots of cute reindeer.
You even get to go inside the pen of the male and the female reindeer and feed them lichen, which is like candy to them. While they are eating you might be able to pet them a bit as well.
The sledding was fun, too. Our reindeer was quite mellow and took its time to do the tour. :)
Frederick and Peter were amazing hosts!
Time went by so quickly! I would definitely recommend doing this activity!

Every aspect of the day was memorable and so worth taking this tour. It was an incredible experience to be taken into the forest to feed the reindeer , learn more about the Sami culture, go on a sled ride led by a reindeer and then have a delicious lunch in the Sami traditional tent . Be ready to participate. This is hands on, lots of walking, and Fredrick puts you to work! You get personal with the animals and Fredrick is an amazing guide to the Sami culture and way of life.

I expected to see probably up to 20 Reindeer. I couldn’t believe it when I saw how many there were. Excellent value for money. Got to feed heaps of them and got to drive my own reindeer on a sled. The most wonderful day and Frederick was the most amazing Sami host.

Picked up on time, smooth transfer. Full day with Sami, perfectly organized, feeding the reindeers, sledding, lunch in tent with campfire. Lunch that wS prepared wS with reindeer meet which was delicious. Unforgettable experience overall! I would recommend!

I could not recommend enough this trip!! If you are in Kiruna and you are interested in getting to know more about the Sami culture, go on this tour. It was definitely one of my best experiences and the hosts are incredible in providing this close opportunity in looking after reeinders, feeding them, reeinder sleeding, explaining their culture .... they go far and beyond to provide an unique experience!!

Honestly, this was the highlight of our trip over seeing the northern lights and dog sledding.
Firstly, both of our guides were absolutely fantastic hosts. They do a great job of inviting you to get a brief look of what life is like as a Sami reindeer herder. They are very kind people and really care that you get a good experience.
They picked us up from Kiruna and brought us to their farm. When we arrived we were given some warm boots, snow suit, and gloves. We got to help them during their daily reindeer feeding including feeding them by hand. Then we were taken back to warm up before getting to do reindeer sledding. Finally we were given a meal of realindeer meat in a traditional tent and then we're driven driven back.
However, for me the highlight was learning more about what day to day life is like for them, how herding has changed in the last decades and about living in the snowy forest. They were very happy to answer all questions that we had and we learned a lot.

We drove to a village 1.5 hours from Kiruna. We helped the herders with feeding the reindeer, a lovely experience. After that we did reindeer sledding on a 1km track through the snow, very fun! The day ended with having a super tasty lunch by the fire in a tipi; pita bread with smoked reindeer. Throughout the whole day, our friendly guides (Sami people) told us a lot of information about their culture and lifestyle which was very interesting!

My boyfriend and I absolutely loved this tour! Our guides were so incredibly nice and welcoming. The reindeer were even more adorable than we could have ever imagined. The reindeer sledding was probably our favorite! For lunch the host cooked us a delicious reindeer kebab that really blew us away. We had tried reindeer before but this preparation was very different and quite tasty. After the tour the guides took us to where we could buy some reindeer prelates for a good deal and we did not have any trouble finding the perfect one. We’d recommend this tour to anybody as it’s super informative, really fun, and above all else - magical!

We were really surprised with how freindly and hospitable Fredrik and his wife treated us. The best feature is that we just experienced a typical day in the authentic life of the Sami people! It isn’t touristic at all! They only organise it in little groups so that they can explain their way of living in a very personal way. They have bonded with every single one of us. And we had the opportunity to meet many rendiers!! We fed them and hugged them and we REALLY enjoyed it SO much!! Thank you for the lovely experience! Greatings from the Belgian girls!

Die Rentiere auf offenem Gelände zu erleben und zu füttern war sehr schön, auch das im Zelt frisch gebratene Rentierfleisch im Fladenbrot war wirklich richtig lecker und wird auf jeden Fall in Erinnerung bleiben. Von unserem Rentierhirten hat man viel gelernt, aber leider war die Schlittenfahrt sehr kurz. Man ist selbst eine Runde von ca. 1 km gefahren. Für den Preis und die lange Anfahrt von Kiruna aus (1,5 Stunden) wäre eine etwas längere Fahrt schön gewesen. Insgesamt war es aber ein guter Ausflug.

Hello! It's not just sledding on this tour. We will have time to feed the reindeer herd, eat and learn about the sled reindeer. But also about Sami culture. If we were to drive longer reindeer sleds, then we wouldn't have time to do the other things. Then it would be dark because of the polar night. And in the dark you can't drive yourself. So we recommend you to book a private tour with us. Then we can go on longer trips with reindeer sleds.

Een bijzondere ervaring! Fedrik is heel aardig en bereid om alle vragen te beantwoorden over het leven van de Sami. We hebben enorm genoten van de rendieren, we mochten ze eten geven en later ook nog een stuk sleeën met ze. Ze hebben allemaal een ander karakter, dat was leuk om te zien. Dit is totaal geen toeristenval, het is een kleine groep en er is meer dan genoeg tijd en aandacht voor iedereen om vragen te stellen. De middag eindigde met een heerlijke maaltijd met gerookt rendiervlees. Mmmm. Echt een aanrader! Dit is een ervaring om niet te vergeten.

Es war ein sehr schöner Tag bei den Rentieren. Frederic hat über die Sami und deren Kultur und Traditionen erzählt.
Die Gruppe war klein, dadurch hatte man auch die Möglichkeit viele Fragen zu stellen.
Die abschließende Schlitten Tour mit den Rentieren war das Highlight.
