The sunset kayak tour was the highlight of our stay in Hoi An. Tam was a fantastic guide - very knowledgeable and friendly - and we learnt a lot from him about the area, life on the river for the local people and the history of Hoi An. You get to see a completely different side to the area which you miss if not on the river.

Fantastic afternoon!!!! With the rainy season, the river levels were up and I was lucky enough to get a sunny day to kayak the Thu Bon River and it did not disappoint. I ended up on a private tour as it is end of season and rain turns tourists away. Don’t let a little rain ruin a great day paddling people - book the tour!!! Quan picked me up from my hotel and then customised the tour to my experience meaning we kayaked a longer distance which was epic. Quan was insightful, helpful and shared cool information about the river, and the communities and people along the river. Even better, the rainstorm and clouds cleared resulting in a very pretty sunset! The river is a fun way to see Hoi An and highly recommend this tour any time of year it’s operating. Only point of awareness which is not a reflection of the tour company at all but awareness is good if not a frequent paddler - river care and trash clean up is really needed in Vietnam. Some pockets of the river are affected significantly more than others. With that said, it is still a unique and valuable experience.

Booked this trip thinking it would be a cruisey paddle and float around up at the old town with the lantern boats. The beginning was great and easy, cruising through one of the island canals amongst the jungle and seeing lots of crabs. Then it became very difficult once we were on the main arm of the river. The tandem kayak is very difficult to keep straigh and we zig zagged the whole way and it was atleast a 6km paddle in currents that was exhausting. We are both moderately fit people. If you have never kayaked before or are not fit I would not recommend this trip. Our guide however was amazing and tried to assist us wherever he could. Once we made it to lantern town, we weren’t allowed to enter because it was after 5pm. So I believe the description of the tour needs updating because the lanterns don’t come out until sunset and afterwards when it’s dark. Still a good tour, was just very physically challenging and now what we expected. Tour 2.5/5. Guide 5/5.

A weather dependent activity

Tour guides were great but due to weather our trip was cut short and was very difficult. We have kayaked before but due to the wind and rain we had to stop and get a car to the end. I’m sure this would be great if the weather is calm, but check ahead. You are not in a solo kayak, you are in a double one, which would not have been my preference.

Excellent guide and relaxing tour

My tour guide Long was great! Super friendly and helpful. He gave me his sunglasses because mine were not good enough to ward off the sun. He took loads of pictures for me. The tour itself was very nice. One thing I would recommend though is to bring a pair of very good sunglasses and a hat. The sun was very bright and we were paddling in the direction of the sun so I couldn't see much with my cheap drugstore sunglasses.
