This tour is subject to the availability of reservations at the National Park. If availability is not confirmed, access will still be granted, but the hike will start at La Joya and the destination will be Paso de Cortés, covering 7 km one way and 7 km back.
Access to the Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park is via a dirt road, which may cause movement in the vehicle due to the terrain conditions. For this reason, we proceed at a slow speed to ensure safety and comfort during the journey.

We liked the idea of a walk in the mountains, but without our own transport or knowledge of routes etc. this would have been impossible. The guided hike enabled us to do so safely, in the confidence that we would reach the starting point, would be well looked after and couldn't get lost. We were blessed with lovely weather on the day: chilly, but with beautiful sunshine, and the views of the mountains were spectacular. It was a peaceful day out, away from the busyness of the city. Walking was relatively easy (not rocky and not too steep), but the path was very dusty at times. We are not used to walking at high altitudes, but the route was well chosen for our ability (7 km each way). Hiram was a great guide, very patient, judged our ability and walked at our speed, taking into account that we were interested in stopping to look at birds etc. on the way. His English was excellent and communication was great throughout. All in all it was a great day's hiking. Many thanks.

Hiking above 4000m with a true local

Great experience with a true local! We are quite experienced hikers but didnt know how we would have handled the altitude. With a smooth pace we managed to hike from 3900 to 4500m with a beautiful view, despite the cloudy weather. Aaron shared a lot of interesting information with us, I would definitely recommend!

Hard hike - great views

Really good experience hiking with Ariel. A difficult home for some no doubt due to the altitude - we found it tough at times, but worth the effort. Spectacular views. Hosts provided drinks etc that weren’t expected. Very pleased with this experience overall

I had the best guide from Unlimited Experiences. He is a mountain hiker & has been on this hike many times. He knew the route for getting to the park & came equipped with extra gear in case I needed it. I did use the helmet. He was very knowledgeable about the area, geological info of the volcano & climate. I couldn’t have asked for a better time. He helped me acheive my goal to reach Portillo 1 & we did it before the rain storm arrived. Highly recommend this tour company & Ariel as a guide. Hope to be able to so this again.

Highlight of our trip to Puebla!

This was my first experience with Viator and it was extremely positive! Communication was great before and during our trip. Itza Popo National Park is gorgeous and extremely special. Our guide gave us so much information that helped us with knowledge and appreciation of the park, the surrounding locals, Puebla and Mexico. Note that for this tour, our guide didn't take us to the top of Itza or Popo, that would not be possible in a day trip. For those interested in this hike, make sure you are in good shape and have adjusted to the elevation. Overall, I would do this as again!

Loved the experience overall! Ariel was a very friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous guide. I felt safe because of his extensive experience hiking the volcano, and the oxygen checks also made me feel safe (he said if my oxygen level went below a certain point we would descend, which didn't happen but it was good to be aware of that.) I have an intermediate fitness level and I felt that the hike was just the right level of challenge, and you can choose how far you climb based on your comfort level. The only disappointment for me was that I filled out a form to choose a hot beverage which I was told I would receive on the mountain, so I was looking forward to this instant coffee in the morning, but it was not actually provided. Also, I was only given information the day before the tour about the pick-up time (2 hours earlier than listed on my booking) and about all the gear that I would need. It would have been helpful to receive this information more in advance and to have more consistency between what I was told is included and what was actually included (like coffee). However, the experience was overall definitely worth the value.

I had a unique and very strong experience on the Iztaccihuatl! Besides the luck I had with the weather that was just perfect I had the best guide there is, Aaron, whom I thank again for his enlightened advice, his geological, geographical and cultural explanations and for all the other exchanges! My physical conditions even allowed us to push two levels higher than expected, up to 5000m which was unexpected.
