- Due to the public display of the relics of St. Francis, access to the basilica of St. Francis will be suspended from February 15 to April 6, 2026. During this period, the guide will provide the explanation from outside the basilica.

Michele was a wonderful guide full of knowledge of Assisi and the surrounding Umbrian region. He customised the tour to our preferences given it was just my family of 4 attending. Werner was a great guide for our family of 6 (2 adults and 4 teenagers). He gave us a comprehensive history of Assisi, St. Clare, St. Francis, as well as the opportunity to visit the tomb of Carlo Acutis, and provide us with a wonderful lunch option, too. He helped us find shelter during some thunderstorms, and gave us additional information about other churches and things to see in Assisi. We would definitely recommend Werner to anyone looking to learn more about Assisi and the saints who left their marks there so long ago.

Travellers should be aware that the terrain in Assisi is quite hilly so lots of up and down walking but nothing to do with the tour itself.
The atmosphere in Assisi is one of peaceful reflection and spirituality, underlined by the presence of many groups of religious orders we encountered on our journey.
Our guide Michele was sensitive to our physical needs as it was very hot and walking was slightly problematic due to a back injury I had sustained previously. Michele was proactive in that he had looked us up on WhatsApp and was able to approach us at the meeting point, knowing what I looked like.
Michele is a mine of information and brought to life not only the history of Assisi but also current religious issues and controversies. We had heard previously about Carlo Acuti, the young man who was beatified in October 2020, (is to become a saint) and were very privileged to be taken to see him lying in state in his Nike trainers and jeans in the chapel of Santa Maria Maggiore - an extraordinary, unique and unforgettable experience. The tour also included the Basilica of St Francis which is absolutely beautiful and seemed a fitting resting place for an extraordinary man. We thoroughly recommend this tour.

A really insightful and spiritually fulfilling day in Assisi. Our guide was extremely well versed, thoughtful and not once made us feel rushed (our 15yr old son and 11yr old daughter were part of the tour). Assisi, given its beauty and spiritual significance is a place meant to be taken in slowly and our guide gave us the space to do just that. Would definitely recommend.

Francesca, our guide, was friendly and knowledgeable, but I did not think the tour was worth $40 per person. The guide spent too much time explaining and I don't believe enough places were covered. We did not have headsets so it was difficult at times to understand. I think you can navigate assisi without a guide. A waste of money.

The sites of Assisi were brilliantly brought to life by our brilliant guide Daniella. Her English was excellent and she skillfully illuminated our walking tour with interesting historical detail. Daniella also provided lots of contemporary detail and interest to our tour. All our family loved the tour and would 100% recommmend it.

I studied the life of St. Francis and the life of Claire before I came. I did my homework. Alessandra, my tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the lives of Francis and Claire, the memorable events, their circumstances, and all the characters that played vital roles. Thus, as we walked the Basilica of St. Claire, for instance, it all came alive. There, hanging there, was the Cross that spoke to Francis.
Alessandra explained that in the Middle Ages there was no film, radio or TV; no video, iPhone or internet. The paintings, statues, frescoes, served as cultural textbooks as it were. Alessandra ‘read’ these to me which gave me great context for understanding the lives and times of Claire and Francis. Then, of course, there are the samadhis of Claire and Francis. These are sacred sites of the first order. Alessandra showed me the way there and gave me as much time as needed to personally pay my respects.
Then there is the artwork. The Basilica of St. Francis. We spent a good deal of time there. It is simply too much to take in in one visit, but Alessandra gave a terrific head start. Cimabaue, Giotto. She told me the back stories behind their creations. She also explained the stories their artwork represented. Then she explained how different materials faded at different rates (wet vs dry frescoes) and how paints containing more iron oxidize creating a photo negative effect.
On our walk through Assisi - St Claire’s Basilica is on the east and St Francis’s is on the west- Alessandra was very helpful in pointing out the best shops, where to get information, where to catch buses and taxis, and which public performances were upcoming.
Please understand that there is a lot more I gained. Actually I am leaving out most of the tour, but I hope you get the feeling that it was a tour and a half by any standard and one I recommend most highly.
