Woniye did a great job working with me during a shorter layover to show me the key sites of the city! Walked me through the national museum, drove around the mountains and the market, and took me for some coffee - all within the 4hrs I had! Would definitely recommend (and would definitely do again) for a layover.

On February 28, my Etihad flight from Cochin to Chicago via Abu Dhabi was canceled due to the Middle East airspace closure related to the regional conflict. With many flights quickly selling out, I scrambled for alternatives and managed to reroute through Mumbai on Air India, followed by an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Chicago. The itinerary came with a 15-hour layover in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines provided a transit visa and hotel room, but spending daylight hours in a hotel in a city I had never visited felt like a missed opportunity. So I booked a same-day private city tour. Within an hour, my guide and driver arrived, and the three of us set out to explore Addis Ababa. I was surprised by how modern and developed much of the city felt. The highlight was visiting the National Museum of Ethiopia, where I saw Lucy, the famous 3-million-year-old hominid fossil that helped reshape our understanding of human evolution. Nearby was Selam, an even older and remarkably preserved child fossil — a humbling reminder of how far back our human story goes. We also visited Merkato, the massive open-air market often described as the largest in Africa. Calling it a second-hand market barely captures it — it felt more like a cathedral of recycling, where everything imaginable finds a second or third life. Along the way I experienced Ethiopian coffee culture, which is almost ceremonial. I paid about $100 for the private tour, probably slightly above local prices, but the experience was excellent — especially considering it was arranged the same day. If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend a stopover in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines and a quick city tour. What could have been a long layover became a fascinating glimpse into one of the cradles of human history.

My husband and I were unable to do this tour. I'm giving a 5 star review because it is in no way the fault of the tour operator. The city looked very interesting from the airplane window, so we were super disappointed that we weren't able to explore it. I'm leaving a review as a heads up to others who want to explore Addis Ababa. Customs WILL NOT let you take binoculars out of the airport. Zoom lenses on cameras are ok though. Go figure! There is an option to store valuables at the airport, but it was a complicated process and we were not comfortable with it. (I would need to lock my binoculars in a storage cage then use a different exit separate from my husband. We envisioned not being able to find one another on the other side!) Our plane was a bit late and by the time we sorted through the issue, we were 2 hours late for the tour anyway. I had connectivity issues with my phone so I was not able to contact the tour operator to let them know not to expect us, and it was another reason why I didn't want to separate from my husband. The worst part was not being able to get back to the departures area and through security until 3 hours before our flight, so we sat around baggage claim for 5 hours. When it was time, we had to be escorted by customs to the departures area since I had binoculars in my carry on. We are seasoned travelers and I'm usually very good at researching foreign country requirements but never came across any info from customs about binoculars. Also, heads up that if you are a US citizen, be sure to get a tourist visa to exit the airport. There is a "visa on arrival" counter, or you can purchase one on-line in advance. In general, bring your patience and be prepared for a chaotic **** show at the airport.

Great tour for a layover! Wonde was our tour guide and was absolutely wonderful!! Because of our later flight, we had very limited time before the museums and market closed. Not a problem for Wonde-he made sure we saw the highlights in the museum quickly and informatively-but somehow without being rushed through-and then straight to the market so we could see it before it closed as well. He adjusted our tour completely to fit our needs/wants and was very flexible on pick up and drop off locations. His passion for his country, city and culture is evident throughout all the stories and information given. He was eager to answer our many questions and asked some of our cultural differences as well. I only wished we had more time to spend with him!!

Henok was a wonderful tour guide. He was very knowledgeable about Ethiopian History and culture. We saw and experienced so many things in our short time. Our driver Teddy was an excellent driver. He was very friendly and got us to each destination safely. Pick up and drop off at the Skylight hotel went smoothly.

Avoid! Unfair! Unprofessional!

This is not a reliable or fair tour operator. I am currently fighting with Viator to get money back for the tour we did not go on. It should be listed in details that your layover should at least 8 hours to be able to complete this tour. I messaged the tour operator prior to our arrival about our flight information and they did not mention this. They barely responded with I information about meeting; I had to pull for more information about meeting for the tour. We arrived to immigration and were turned away due to our layover being 7 hours and 5 minutes. We also spoke with Ethiopian Ailines about possibly receiving a hotel voucher as this would allow us to leave the airport; they also declined due to our layover duration. I had the airport staff speak with the driver about what was happening, over the phone. During this time and for the remainder of the day, the tour operator became unresponsive and ignored my messages until I had Viator support contact them. We paid $300, and the operator eventually offered only a $90 refund. Unacceptable! At most they could have kept $60 to pay the driver, but kept $210. I will continue to fight for the remainder refund. Beware of this tour operator for layovers under 8 hours, or booking with them, in general, as they will ignore you if things go wrong.

GishAbay Tours is a reputable and reliable tour operator in Ethiopia, as evidenced by our numerous positive reviews from satisfied clients. We take great pride in delivering exceptional service and always strive to accommodate our guests' needs. Below, we provide a detailed response to clarify the facts: Reginice booked a layover tour for 5 adults on March 22, 2025, for the date March 23, 2025, with a requested pickup at 8:00 AM. We immediately confirmed her booking and arranged a driver, guide, and vehicle for her group, incurring costs in good faith. At no point did she mention that her layover was only 7 hours and 5 minutes a critical detail that would have allowed us to advise her that the tour was not feasible. Ethiopian Airlines’ official policy states that transit passengers must have a minimum of 8 hours to leave the airport. This is an airline/immigration rule, not our policy. https://www.ethiopianairlines.com/et/services/services-at-the-airport/addis-ababa-stopovers Upon arrival, Reginice was denied exit by immigration due to her layover duration being insufficient a factor entirely outside our control. Ethiopian Airlines also refused to provide a hotel voucher, further preventing her from leaving the airport. Despite this, our team remained in communication until it became clear the tour could not proceed and once Viator Support intervened, we responded promptly and worked toward a resolution. Reginice claims we kept $210, which is inaccurate. After refunding $90, we retained only $126 not $210 after Viator’s commission. According to Viator’s Terms & Conditions, free cancellation is only permitted up to 24 hours before the tour. Since the cancellation was due to unmet layover requirements (not our fault), a full refund was not applicable. Despite this, we voluntarily issued a partial refund $90 as a goodwill gesture, even though we had already paid for the car, driver, and guide. We deeply regret that Reginice’s tour could not proceed, but the issue stemmed from her layover duration and airline/immigration policies, not our service. We have always been transparent in our policies and responsive to our clients, as evidenced by our track record of positive reviews. Given the misleading nature of this review and the fact that the situation was beyond our control, we kindly ask that Viator not publish this review or remove, as it unfairly harms our reputation despite our adherence to policies and efforts to accommodate the client. We booked this tour without any expectations as we had a very long layover and it definitely exceeded our expectations. Teddy was our tour guide and was very friendly and made us feel comfortable. He is very knowledgable about the Ethiopian history and culture so we learnt a lot. He was also very flexible and amended the tour to what we wanted which was really nice. I would recommend you book this tour if you have a layover flight or visiting Bole, there is so much to visit. Thank you so much Teddy for a fantastic day!

how to make the most of a long stopover in addis ababa

We spent a beautiful day in Addis Ababa, thanks to the guide Teddy and the driver Sami. They waited for us due to the flight delay but then we were able to spend a long and beautiful day: National Museum, the Mountain, a fantastic lunch in a typical Ethiopian restaurant! Walking around the Market is very challenging but the guide was very professional and took care of us. Teddy is a kind and knowledgeable person, absolutely recommended!!

We had an 8 hour layover in Addis Ababa, and booked this tour. Our guide Hennok was super knowledgeable, and shared all his knowledge of Ethiopian history. Our driver, Tamil, navigated the traffic of AA like a Formula 1 driver! We saw the museum, St George Cathedral, Mercado and had coffee at a cafe. Highly recommend.

We had less time than most people who book this tour and yet we managed to get everything in and still get back to the airport with enough time to not be stressed about it, including a special request to try the local honey wine. Biruk guide very attentive and friendly. He adjusted the visit to the time we had and the explanations have been very good. In addition, he invited us to a delicious samosa and we felt very comfortable and well taken care of. The only catch is that we had booked the activity with a Spanish-speaking guide and it was in English. Thanks to one of us speaking English and translating the explanations we have been able to make the excursion (that inconvenience was certainly not the fault or responsibility of the guide).
