For me, hosting and home is a whole other thing from a simple restaurant that can be as hospitable as you want but will never be able to welcome you with the serene and informal conviviality of "my home". Here I relive the experiences lived in my grandparents' house before and my parents later. Perfumes from boiling pots, the same but always different voices and gestures of my mother and my aunt who repeat rituals that have unknowingly marked me. Must Do in Matera

Our English speaking guide was fantastic. Was right on time. He gave history, personal stories, and answered all questions. The pace was just right. At the end, we saw the caves (not restored) where his grandparents, cousins, etc. lived. He told us a personal story about when his grandparents finally relocated to the modern buildings, how they reacted to electricity, plumbing, running water. That really brought the entire history of Matera to a greater understanding. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour.

Great tour!

Great tour overall! Our guide Francesco was extremely knowledgeable about Matera and it's history. He kept the tour fun and informative. Great tour

We booked this tour for our first day so that we could see the best areas quickly. We were then able to revisit where we wished, the guide was excellent with good knowledge and English. We were collected at our hotel and the correspondence between ourselves prior to our visit to Matera was excellent. Highly recommend.

Thorough and very informative!

My husband and I did this tour at 5:30pm to avoid the intense August heat in Matera. Patrizia was our guide and she was excellent! Her knowledge of the city was incredible and we never felt rushed at any of the stops. We really felt like she wanted to share her passion and knowledge of beautiful, ancient Matera. Just be aware there are lots of steps. Patrizia was very careful and warned us before every potential hazard to ensure we didn’t rush or slip. Overall an excellent, thorough and beautiful tour. BEST way to see Matera

This is by far the best way to see Matera. Our guide, even with limited English, was incredibly helpful and friendly and showed us everything we wanted to see and more. Plenty of time for photographs and getting out and seeing incredible views. This is a great thing for somebody with a mobility issues, and the central Meetup location was easily accessible by taxi.

Touring Outlying Areas Around Matera.

The tour to Murgia Park was beautiful, allowing us to see some of the areas surrounding the Sassi portion of Matera. We were able to tour a cave church, learn about the refrigeration system of past centuries, and learn about some of the native plants of the area. The weather was quite nice. However, the low cloud cover on the evening of our tour did not allow for a magnificent sunset as we had hoped. To compensate for this disappointment was the ability to see the night lights of Matera’s Sassi area across the deep canyon between us. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful with answering our questions. This was a very pleasant and enjoyable tour!

Lost in Italian

I did the tour knowing it was in Italian but there was no English option at that time. I loved walking around in the evening and the point is to view the sight. The best part and why I booked the tour was the entry to a church and cave house that I otherwise would not have seen.

Fun way to see the city!

Super fun way to see Matera and get some history. We had done a walking tour earlier in day and I was afraid it was going to be same thing. It was not. It built on the other tour. This tour stopped at a recreated cave house and the miniature museum as well as great viewpoints and church of St. Peter. It rained on our evening tour but it was still fun.

Magnificence in Matera

Had an amazing birdseye view of Sassi and also a cave house, plus a few other notable sights along the way. Loved being able to be in the historic spaces without having to walk to them, opportunities to step out and take pictures, and a hospitable driver/guide to “escort” us from place to place.
