Private Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica - Our tour guide Chiara Maria was the best. Her academic background was Art History so she has the knowledge, appreciation, and passion for the exhibits and the story behind the buildings, sculptures, and paintings. Her English was excellent and the way she explained each piece of art sort of takes you back in time to truly appreciate what the artist was like. She has excellent knowledge about Michelangelo and the way she narrated his work was fabulous! Chiara was very personable, down to earth and easy to talk to. 4 hours was obviously not enough to see everything but she made sure we saw all the important highlights and she made sure she answered all our questions. We would love to do another tour with her. Such as pleasant person!

We felt rushed through. Thinking it was because there was so much to cover, we went along with it - only to be told the tour was over 50 minutes earlier than the allotted 4 hour private tour. We also assumed pick up and drop off were included for the price we paid, but at the end of our tour, we were told drop off is not included and were shown to the taxi stand.

We are sorry to hear that the experience did not fully meet your expectations. However, we would like to kindly clarify that during the visit it was your party itself that asked the guide to proceed more quickly through the Museums, due to the heat inside the galleries, the large crowds and because the child was getting tired.
In order to compensate and make the experience more pleasant, the guide also escorted you to the Bronze Door area to speak with the Swiss Guards and then personally walked with you up to Piazza Risorgimento to assist you in finding a taxi.
Regarding the transfer, kindly note that the reservation included the pick-up service only, while the drop-off was not included in the confirmed booking details.
In any case, we sincerely thank you for taking the time to share your impressions, and we hope that, despite the above, you were still able to enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the Vatican Museums experience.

We got a thorough and detailed education with our guide Sonia. She is extremely knowledgeable and eager to have her clients understand the intertextuality of history, religion, and meaning through art. Sonia was in charge in such an amazing way as she skillfully moved us through the lines and crowds. We appreciated that tremendously. We traveled through Italy for two weeks and experienced a number of tours. I have two recommendations for Viator. The first is that you all somehow ask the client what their interests are or what they are drawn to so that there isn't a dissertation of details that detracts from simply enjoying the space. And second, have every tour guide use the microphones. It is a game changer and allows the clients the freedom to listen but look around at the same time. Our tour guide was excellent! He was very knowledgeable and got us through a very crowded and busy Vatican. We were able to see everything we wanted to see. Being picked up at our hotel was a big plus for the tour. We cannot remember the tour guide’s name, ( so frustrating ! ) but he was an older gentleman who has lots of experience.

Linda was a great guide! Our day started off getting picked up at our hotel and dropped directly in front of the Vatican Museums where we met Linda. Linda was a fountain of knowledge of the various pieces in the museum, and spent some time explaining the history and significance of the different paintings in the Sistine Chapel which was very interesting. Having her guide us was especially helpful as one of my group had mobility issues, and just knowing the specific areas to go to for elevators or for additional access was super helpful to make sure we made the best use of our time. She also guided us around St. Peter's Basilica and gave us more context to the areas we were looking at. We were also planning to pick up tickets for the Papal Audience and Linda helped us pick these up at the end of the tour, managing to help us get them a little earlier so we wouldn't have to wait around or leave and come back and go through all the security again (though this was not something we expected of her, just a huge plus that it worked out!). It's well worth it to have a personal guide as the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica can be pretty overwhelming even if you've been there before. In the more crowded areas of the museum, it was a little hard to hear her, but after we got to the Basilica and got the audio equipment pieces, it became much easier. Even with a small group, it might be good to have these even in the museums for ample ability to hear. All in all, a great experience.

Very unfortunate experience and by far the worst experience I have had on a Viator private tour. Despite being in continuous communication with the tour to tell them this was a very special occasion, we were informed only upon arrival that Saint Peter’s Basilica was closed and we wouldn’t be able to see it and that this is well known by locals that the Basilica is closed the Saturday before Easter. This is a significant breach of contract by Viator who could have helped us to reschedule when the Basilica was open. Viator needs to take accountability for this misrepresentation and lack of care. This will be my dad’s last chance to se the Basilica due to age. It was his birthday wish that he would get to see the Basilica and we flew thousands of miles to make that happen. Viator let us down and was negligent in transparently communicating within a window where their was opportunity to correct this.

We completely understand the emotional value behind this moment, and we genuinely regret that the closure of St. Peter’s Basilica impacted your experience in this way.
Unfortunately, the Basilica’s opening is strictly managed by the Vatican and can be subject to sudden changes, particularly during Easter week, when religious celebrations may lead to unexpected closures. These decisions are communicated very last minute and are outside the control of any tour operator.
When your tour was arranged, we specifically extended it to 4 hours to ensure a more comfortable and complete experience, also taking into consideration your father’s mobility. At that time, there was no indication that the Basilica would not be accessible. Likewise, when we contacted you again on March 22 regarding wheelchair arrangements, no closure had been announced yet.
As outlined on Viator at the time of booking, access to St. Peter’s Basilica is not guaranteed and may be restricted without prior notice. In these situations, our guides adapt the experience accordingly, providing detailed explanations from St. Peter’s Square to ensure guests still gain meaningful insight into the site.
While we are not in a position to offer a refund due to the nature of these circumstances, please be assured that every effort was made to provide the best possible experience on the day.

The guide was excellent, however we were not notified ahead of time that the Basilica was closed.
Seeing the Basilica was 1/3 of the tour.
Additionally, Viator had posted that the “End point” was the same as the “Meeting point”. We were picked up at the hotel, that was the “Meeting point”, but there was no transportation arranged to return us to the hotel.
So I paid more than $850 for only part of the advertised tour and had to cover additional costs and deal with several Uber cancellations, trying to get back to the hotel.
I reached out to the tour company twice prior to arriving in Rome. The purpose was to discuss the transportation. The tour company never responded and they blamed Viator.
Super disappointing. Lack of communication with the tour company and each time I called Viator, staff just listened to the issue for a couple minutes, then hung up.
In my view, Viator does not support the customer as they should.

Regarding transportation, the service you booked clearly states “hotel pickup included” under the inclusions, while “hotel drop-off” is listed among the exclusions, with the option to add it at an additional cost. The pickup is provided as a convenience to comfortably reach the meeting point, which is where the tour officially begins. As specified, the tour ends at the Vatican, where you meet your guide.
Concerning the Basilica, we fully understand how disappointing it can be to find it closed. However, as indicated in the notes and disclaimers available prior to booking, access to St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to closures beyond our control. In such cases, the tour is adjusted by spending additional time inside the Vatican Museums. Additionally, our guide offered to assist by providing information on how to access the Basilica later in the day once it reopened.
We always strive to be as transparent as possible and ensure that all relevant details are clearly communicated in advance so that guests can make informed decisions when booking.
We regret that some aspects of your experience did not meet your expectations, but we hope this clarification helps provide a more complete understanding of the service delivered.

It was an interesting tour, the tour guide was the best you can imagine, with a lot of knowledge, but the crowd of people was overwhelming, terrible and unbeatable. I would never take surgery again. The second issue is the return to the hotel was apparently not included and I realized that later on looking on the backside of the paper I had. This is not a private tour that is enjoyable because I had to hire a private driver to get back to our hotel. Nothing wrong with a guide but the whole tour was not enjoyable.

Easy pick up in a van from our airbnb for our party of 6 including 2 grandparents. Great tour and guide and especially grateful for how helpful and attentive she was when 1 of our party had a slight medical emergency. She was also instrumental in helping us use closed private staircases etc. Note the description of the tour does say moderate physical activity which is true and from what we could tell the Vatican Museums are not really set up for wheelchairs or walkers. That said our elderly parents were able to do it and enjoy it thanks to our amazing guide allowing some stops. If you are an elder or with elders THIS IS WORTH IT TO HAVE THIS PRIVATE TOUR not only for all the amazing and extensive information but also for the care and attention. Highly recommend.

What a spectacular day! We were picked up at our hotel in a beautiful Mercedes van and whisked through the streets of Rome to the Vatican where we met our incredible guide. You only see the outside of the museum and the relics, maps, tapestries. We did make a short stop inside the Sistine Chapel where there is no speaking and St. Peters where it is too busy to hear anything. We should have played out our expectations of viewing the Raphael Rooms and the rest of the museum instead of the tutorial outside. We needed to better explain and make clear our our expectations of the tour.

We would like to clarify that speaking inside the Sistine Chapel is strictly forbidden by Vatican Museums regulations and does not depend on us or on the guide. Likewise, the high number of visitors during the festive period results in very crowded conditions, especially inside St. Peter’s Basilica.
Please also note that during this time of year there are additional restrictions inside the Basilica, including limitations on explanations given inside, which are imposed by the authorities and are beyond our control.
In light of the above, the aspects mentioned in your review do not depend on the service provided by us, but are outside of our control and beyond our will.
