3 Days in Verona for First Timers

Curated by Rebecca Winkewho has been living in—and traveling around—Italy for decades.

Best known as the home of the star-crossed lovers in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Verona has long been a go-to destination for couples looking for a romantic getaway. That was the reason I first visited many years ago, and its atmospheric old town filled with cobblestone lanes and bustling squares was the ideal setting for a weekend with my beau. We’ve since returned several times to spend time taking in performances at the Roman Arena di Verona, enjoy sweeping views from the Lamberti Tower (Torre dei Lamberti), and sip wines in the Valpollicella vineyards just outside the city. Those are just a few ideas—with three days in Verona, here are some tips on where to start.

You’ll spend most of your time in Verona outside, so check the forecast and dress accordingly.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a wine tasting in Valpollicella.

Day 1

Begin your 3-day itinerary with a walking tour or sightseeing e-bike ride through the historic center to cover Piazza delle Erbe, Juliet’s balcony, Piazza Bra, the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, Piazza dei Signori, and other must-see attractions in Verona. You can also visit Verona with a Romeo and Juliet-themed tour, or an itinerary focused on Dante-related sights.

In the afternoon, cross Castelvecchio Bridge (Ponte Scaligero)to admire the Adige River or head up to Castel San Pietro with the funicular or a hop-on hop-off bus tour for views of Verona from above. Time your stop here with sunset for a romantic end to the day.

Day 2

After kicking off your first time in Verona with the city’s cultural sights, spend your second day exploring its cuisine with a cooking class followed by lunch with a local host or chef. Join a small group of fellow travelers to discover how to prepare fresh pasta, tiramisù, and other traditional recipes—then relax over lunch featuring the dishes you’ve prepared served with local wine.

In the evening, catch a performance at the Arena, one of the best things to do in Verona for first timers. This ancient theater hosts an annual summer opera festival from June to September. If tickets are sold out, opt for a more intimate performance in a historic villa open to the public for the occasion.

Day 3

Set off your final morning on a day trip to Valpolicella for a wine tour focused on local Amarone labels. Round-trip transportation from Verona takes the stress out of exploring, and you can sip wines at a number of cellars without having to take the wheel. Tastings generally also include local cheeses, cold cuts, and other gourmet pairings.

Before heading back to Verona, stop at Lake Garda for a scenic boat cruise from Sirmione. Take in the Scaligero Castle, the lake islets, and the lush lakeshore from the water, and make time for a stop in Salò to take in the town’s hidden gems on your own.
