3 Days in Mumbai for First Timers
Mumbai has always been special to me. It's the first Indian city I ever visited—and the reason that India won my heart. I cried my way to the airport, already plotting my return.
A year later, I moved to India, where I remained for six years. While I was based in Delhi for much of my time in the country, I always jumped at the chance to spend extended work stints in Mumbai. I still visit whenever I can, and recently spent three days showing this special city to my partner for the very first time. Here’s what we did.
Be prepared for rain, and not just during the summer monsoon.
If you only have time for one thing, make it Chowpatty Beach.
Start your trip by visiting the southern part of town, notably the Fort and Colaba areas, where many of the city's most popular attractions are located. It's easy to explore the area on foot, though having a guide will make finding your way around much easier.
In the afternoon, take a train ride to visit Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry, then head to Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum area. Opt for a guided tour with a Dharavi local who can provide insight into the area’s traditions and infrastructure.
Wake up extra early to experience the magic of Mumbai at dawn; join a tour to see a fish auction at the Sassoon Dock, vendors setting up their stalls at markets, and newspaper sorting at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
After a refreshing breakfast, learn more about Bollywood (a portmanteau of Bombay and Hollywood)—the world's largest film industry—with a studio tour.
In the evening, head out to try some of Mumbai's celebrated street food, from vada pav (a potato slider) to bhelpuri (puffed rice mixed with vegetables and chutneys). There are plenty of vendors all over town, but a local can take you to the best spots.
On your final day, head down to the Gateway of India and hop on a boat to the Elephanta Caves, a series of ancient rock-hewn caves on an island just off the coast.
In the later afternoon, stroll down Marine Drive, lined with art deco buildings, for scenic ocean views. Enjoy the sunset and lively atmosphere at popular Chowpatty Beach before sampling some of the city’s nightlife.
