3 Days in Bari For First-Timers

Curated by Rebecca Winkewho has been living in—and traveling around—Italy for decades.

With its busy train station and cruise port, Bari is one of southern Italy’s main transportation hubs and is often used as a departure point to explore the Puglia region and farther afield. I passed through many times over the years on my way to board a plane, train, or ferry to other Mediterranean destinations, and it was only a cancelled flight that forced me to pause for my first stay in Bari. I was surprised to discover a delightful city center, with vibrant shopping streets, beautiful historic attractions, and an authentically Italian vibe. Consider stopping for three days in Bari to explore the city and its nearby treasures at a leisurely pace on your next Italy adventure.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a stroll along the lively Lungomare seafront promenade by night.

There is little respite from Bari’s summer heat, so protect yourself with a hat, sunscreen, and light clothing.

Day 1

Kick off your three days by covering the must-see attractions in Bari with a private or small-group walking tour through the Bari Vecchia historic center. Itineraries generally cover heavy-hitters, such as the Swabian Castle, Piazza del Ferrarese, the St. Nicholas Basilica, and the cathedral dedicated to Saint Sabinus. More in-depth tours also stop at hidden gems, including the Teatro Petruzzelli opera house and the small but excellent Archaeological Museum.

In the afternoon, escape the bustle of Bari and head south along the coast to Polignano a Mare. Stroll through this atmospheric fishing village and set sail with a scenic boat tour that skirts the grotto-lined coast, dropping anchor along the way for a refreshing dip.

Day 2

Bari’s food scene is a point of pride, and a street food tour tops the list of best things to do in Bari for first-timers. Set off this morning with a food tour led by an insider guide to sample focaccia, gelato, and other local specialties. Choose a private or small-group option, so you’ll have time to ask for bar and restaurant recommendations for further culinary explorations in the city on your own.

After dedicating your morning to cuisine, check your culture box with a tour of Castel del Monte, the striking 13th-century fortress located about an hour west of the city. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this famous landmark is steeped in history and lore, so visit with a guide to fully appreciate its rich legacy.

Day 3

Hop on a train north along the coast to Trani this morning, a pocket-sized coastal town about 30 minutes from Bari. Explore the old town with a guide to better appreciate the highlights, including the Norman cathedral, the Swabian castle, and the former Jewish quarter, ending with time for lunch overlooking the postcard-perfect historic port.

End your first time in Bari by connecting with a local host or chef for an interactive cooking class in the heart of the city. Learn the tricks to turning out handmade pasta and other classic recipes with the help of your instructor, and enjoy a final dinner that features the dishes you’ve prepared paired with Puglian wines.
