Top Vieste On the Water

The Gargano Trabucchi—an ancient fishing device using large mesh nets and no machinery—are famous along the Apulian coast, and part of the region’s cultural heritage. However, it takes local experience to know how they operate and to see them in action. On this interactive private tour, help pull the nets and collect fish, topped off a tasting of regional snacks and goodies.

Most Puglia itineraries focus on the trulli, Lecce, or the Salento coast, leaving the Gargano peninsula's dramatic limestone coastline to a smaller pool of travelers. From Vieste, follow the cliffs east to Baia delle Zagare and its Faraglioni sea stacks, passing the Pizzomunno monolith, the Arco di San Felice natural arch, and a string of bays only reachable by sea.

A mix of history and sea. Sailing along the north coast, the trebuchets appear one after the other like ancient wooden sentries overlooking the sea, suspended between land and water. From a distance they look like mythological creatures, with long antennas ready to dive into the sea; up close you can appreciate every detail: the robust Aleppo pine poles, the boards worn by the sun, the ropes that whisper in the wind. The skipper tells the story of these ingenious fishing machines, born to challenge a sea sometimes generous, sometimes unpredictable. We talk about families, about tradition handed down for generations, about a profession that was more art than work. In the return there is the possibility of one or more bathroom stops. Experience the best of the sea of Vieste at your own pace. Hop on board and discover the magic of the Gargano, one bay after another.
