Chugging past the misty lochs and sweeping glens of the Scottish Highlands, the Jacobite Steam Train offers one of Britain’s greatest railway journeys, taking passengers on a nostalgic train ride between Fort William in Scotland’s West Highlands and Mallaig on the west coast. The 84-mile (135-kilometer) round-trip route passes Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis, and the Glenfinnan viaduct, made famous by the Harry Potter movies where the train stood in for the fictional Hogwarts Express.

One of the most popular natural attractions on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, the towering sea cliff of Kilt Rock is so named for its resemblance to the traditional Scottish garment. The 180-foot (55-meter vertical cliff is composed of both igneous and sedimentary rock of different colors, which come together in vertical bands and look like the pleats of a kilt.

The Clava Cairns—or the Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Balnuaran of Clava—are all that remains of what was once a much larger Bronze Age burial complex. Dating back 4,000 years, the evocative cemetery site retains original features, including passage graves, standing stones, and ring cairns (stone circles).

Set amid splendid gardens at the foot of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official Edinburgh residence of the British royals. The complex grew from 12th-century Holyrood Abbey, whose ruins can still be seen on the grounds, into a full-fledged palace. It’s perhaps most famous for having hosted Mary, Queen of Scots, whose private chambers can still be explored today.

The official church of the Church of Scotland, St. Giles’ Cathedral and its famous crown spire tower over the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s Old Town. With a history stretching back over 900 years, St. Giles is renowned for its beautiful stained glass windows, ornate Thistle Chapel, and busy concert calendar.

Nestled in the heart of Edinburgh, Grassmarket is a captivating historic street. Visitors are drawn to its vibrant atmosphere, charming cafés, eclectic shops, and a rich history that dates back to the 15th century. Seamlessly blending the past and the present, it’s a cherished part of the city’s heritage.

The Fife village of Culross is easily recognizable for its appearances in the TV series Outlander, but is much more than just a pretty backdrop. Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, Culross (pronounced “coo-riss”) is one of Scotland’s best-preserved 17th-century royal burghs, with a timeless atmosphere that offers a glimpse into the past.

Situated in Fife—the Scottish region known for its castles, fishing villages, scenic landscapes, and golf history—the village of Falkland offers its own strong dose of charm. Nestled among the Lomond Hills Regional Park, Falkland is especially renowned for the 16th-century Falkland Palace, once the residence of the Stuart monarchs.

Looming over Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, Calton Hill is one of the seven hills that the Scottish capital is built on. Come here for 360-degree views that encompass Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, and, on a clear day, the Firth of Forth.

Rising 4,409 feet (1,344 meters) above sea level, Ben Nevis is Scotland’s tallest mountain and a premiere destination for climbers. Once a massive volcano that exploded and collapsed inward, the summit is frequently shrouded in mist. In Gaelic, it is called the “mountain with its head in the clouds” and also “venomous mountain.”

Built in the mid-19th century, this Gothic-style tower commemorates William Wallace, the medieval Scottish freedom fighter whose story was fictionalized in the 1995 blockbuster, Braveheart. Exhibits chronicle key episodes from Scottish history, while the top offers views of Stirling Castle and the surrounding countryside.

The Forth Bridge, the distinctive red-hued cantilevered railway bridge that arches over the Firth of Forth close to Edinburgh, is one of Scotland’s most recognizable symbols. A triumph of engineering, the bridge is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 1,709-foot (521-meter single cantilever span is the second-longest in the world.

Once the favored countryside retreat of the Stuart monarchs, pretty Falkland Palace has seen a long list of famous royals pass through its grand gateway. Mary, Queen of Scots had fond memories of playing in the surrounding woods and parks as a young girl, and James V, James VI, and Charles II were all known to have spent time here.

Scotland's Forth Road Bridge is a structural masterpiece set against the stunning backdrop of the Scottish landscape. Straddled by the 21st-century Queensland Crossing and the iconic 19th-century railway Forth Bridge, this engineering wonder attracts travelers seeking a harmonious blend of history and modernity.

Many of the Stuart royals, among them James I and Mary, Queen of Scots, did stints in this loch-side 15th-century pleasure palace. Gutted by fire in the 18th century, Linlithgow lies in ruin, though evidence of its grandeur—from the great hall to the intricately carved King’s Fountain—is still plentiful.

One of several peaks in the long-extinct volcanic ridge that towers behind Edinburgh, Arthur’s Seat offers hill walking in the heart of the city. Set within the 640-acre (260-hectare) Holyrood Park, it’s also the site of a 2,000-year-old hill fort. On a clear day, the summit promises spectacular views of the cityscape.

Blackness Castle is often referred to as "the ship that never sailed" due to the mighty fortifications that make the 15th-century structure look like an ocean-going vessel. The castle has served as a royal residence, prison, artillery fortification, and fortress over the centuries, and now one of Scotland’s most impressive strongholds is a popular tourist attraction.

One of Edinburgh’s most recognizable landmarks, the Scott Monument is a tribute to celebrated Scottish author and Edinburgh native son Sir Walter Scott. This imposing gothic tower stands 200 feet (61 meters) tall and dominates the skyline of New Town. Climb the 287 steps to the top for splendid views over the city.

Travel to a tiny peninsula at the northern tip of Loch Awe to visit the ruins of Kilchurn Castle, one of the most photographed sites in Scotland. Abandoned since a fire in the 1750s, the ruins are open for exploration, which can include climbing to the top of its 4-story tower. There is no attendant at the door or souvenir shop, just the scenic castle ruins in the countryside.

Dating back to medieval times, Glasgow Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral on Scotland’s mainland to have survived the Reformation almost fully intact. A magnificent Gothic construction, it features stained-glass windows, a 15th-century stone choir screen, and the tomb of St. Mungo, Glasgow’s patron saint.

The cultural center of Glasgow, George Square dates back to 1781. It was named after King George III and today is surrounded by grand buildings including the Glasgow City Chambers. See statues of great Scots, visit the city’s main tourist information office, and go shopping at the annual Christmas market all in this one central square.

Set across two buildings—one Victorian and one modern—and featuring a collection of more than 20,000 artifacts, the National Museum of Scotland is one of Edinburgh’s top visitor attractions. The diverse exhibits cover anything and everything to do with Scotland, including natural history, art, fashion, science, and archaeology.

Straddling the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands, this island-studded loch has the largest surface area of Scotland’s lakes. Made famous by a Scottish folk song, the lake has mirror-clear waters that reflect the nearby crags and peaks, most notably the 3,195-foot (974-meter) Ben Lomond, with views of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

The Scottish Parliament complex, opened by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2004, sits across from Arthur’s Seat at the end of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Known for having one of the most innovative and controversial designs in Britain, Parliament is a must-see on any Edinburgh itinerary; various tours are available for those who want to explore the building.

Once Scotland's largest cathedral, the 12th-century ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral stand as a testament to its former magnificence. Sprawling along the coast of Fife, just a stone’s throw from St. Andrews Castle, the evocative ruins afford impressive views along the coast.

Perched atop a hill by the River Ness, this Victorian-era red sandstone castle—built to replace the medieval fortress blown up by the Jacobites in 1746—is one of Inverness’ most prominent historic structures. Access to the castle, now occupied by government offices and law courts, is restricted but the grounds are open to the public.

Cawdor Castle is immortalized in literary history as the fictional home of the Thane of Cawdor in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The Highland castle, however, has little in common with its fictional counterpart as it wasn't built until the 14th-century, 300 years after the reign of both the real and fictional King Macbeth.

Propelled into the limelight by Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code, the Rosslyn Chapel in the Scottish village of Roslin is a spectacular sight, even for those with no interest in Knights Templar conspiracy theories. The Gothic exterior—with its flying buttresses, pinnacles, and pointed arches—hides an elaborate interior, full of dramatic arches, stained-glass windows, and stone carvings rich in symbolism.

Complete with turrets and battlements, this Gothic Revival-style castle is revered for its storybook good looks. Inveraray Castle has been the seat of the Clan Campbell since the 15th century and has more recently served as a filming location for Downton Abbey. The castle houses collections of weapons and art, and is surrounded by manicured gardens.

Just north of St. Andrews’ town center, the ruins of St. Andrews Castle sit on a windswept headland overlooking a beach. Dating from around 1200, the castle was the main residence of St. Andrews’ bishops and archbishops, and the main administrative center of the Scottish church in medieval-era Scotland.
