Things to do in  Horta

Port and sweet

Hailed as the Azores’ cultural hub, Horta is a colorful port town on Faial Island. Thanks to its position in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, it’s one of the most-visited marinas in the world, with sailors flocking to the famous Peter Café Sport to refresh after long journeys at sea. Even though it’s small, Horta offers plenty of things to do, including visiting the 17th-century Saint Sebastion Fort (Forte de São Sebastião), swimming off the horseshoe-shaped Porto Pim Beach, and hiking to the volcanic peak of Monte Queimado.

When to visit

Horta’s position in the Atlantic Ocean means it’s exposed to the whims of the sea, so avoid winter when storms are more likely. The best and busiest times to visit are spring and summer. Experience the city's cultural festivities by checking out the Feast of Our Lady of Guidance at the start of August, when locals release boats carrying statues of the Virgin Mary, or the Feast of Nossa Senhora das Angústias, celebrated with processions around six weeks after Easter.

Getting around

Horta has its own airport that sees regular arrivals and departures from Lisbon on the mainland and Ponta Delgada and Flores in the Azores archipelago. From the Port of Horta, it’s easy to travel between the five islands in the Central Group (Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Terceira, and Graciosa) by ferry; boats run regularly from June through September. Horta’s small size means it's easy to explore on foot, though renting a car is a good idea for traveling farther afield.

Traveler tips

One of the best hikes on Faial departs directly from Horta. Follow the 2-mile (3.5-kilometer) circular Entre Montes through a variety of landscapes and viewpoints. With 495 feet (151 meters) of elevation gain, this trail takes you to Monte Quiemado, one of the highest points on the island, for sweeping views of Horta and Porto Pim Bay. Along the way, you’ll also see Caldeirinhas Nature Reserve, a 25-acre (10-hectare) area comprising two volcanic craters flooded by the sea.
