What are people saying about Heraklion

Milena_K, Aug 2026
Very worthwhile and a great value!
This was a great way to get a feel for the area given we only had a couple of days in Heraklion. Our guide Soula was fantastic and really made the sights come to life. The Cave of Zeus has beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations, and Soula’s telling of the mythology behind it made it more meaningful. Knossos is, of course, the highlight of any visit to Heraklion. The information Soula gave us in advance and during the guided tour added to the experience. Coming from downtown it took about an hour to pick up all the rest of the visitors from other hotels, but they put us in a minibus directly back downtown at the end, which we greatly appreciated.

knowledgeable, friendly, and fun local tour of Crete
Stavros was such a joy to spend the day with. A local guide who’s been in the tourism industry for years and seems to know everyone everywhere he goes, he’s passionate and knowledgeable and so fun to be around. We got a little bit of history, some mythology, and a whole lot of culture in this tour. He’s strategic about the timing of the various sites and excursions, and might even add on something extra special to make your day with him incredibly memorable. This was a highlight of our Crete vacation for sure! HIGHLY recommend.

Best tour in Heraklion
Wonderful experience with our driver and tour guide Apostolos. He was very knowledgeable of all things Cretan and answered questions we had. Tour itself was a full day of history, culture, activity, and amazing food and views. Highly recommend. Where sneakers for the hike 😉

An exceptional and unforgettable tour
I encourage everyone to take this unforgettable tour, filled with new discoveries and full of emotion. You will see some of the most emblematic sites in Crete, but most importantly, you will be able to hear personal stories and learn about everyday life in Crete (past and present). Our guide., Spyros, felt like a member of the family by the end of the tour. His storytelling skills and ability to make you feel comfortable were phenomenal. He went out of his way to ensure we left the tour with memories to last a lifetime. We will never forget you, Spyros. And we will definitely buy you a coffee if we meet again! -Tricia, Guillaume, and Etienne

Not seeing something you are looking for?

Crete’s capital and largest city, Heraklion, sits not far from the center of the island’s north coast, meaning you can reach anywhere in Crete on a day trip—while ferries will bring you as far afield as Santorini. Some of the top Heraklion day trips include sailing to uninhabited Dia Island, off-road safaris through villages and olive groves, hiking the 10-mile (16-kilometer) Samaria Gorge, and heading west to Chania Old Town or pink-tinted Elafonisi Beach. From the Lassithi Plateau windmills to the fortress isle of Spinalonga, Heraklion makes the perfect base.
