Day Trips from Cusco to Checacupe

Go off the beaten path in Peru and discover Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain, a lesser-known alternative to Vinicunca's Rainbow Mountain. Ideal for those with limited time, this small-group day tour from Cusco offers hotel pickup and drop-off, letting you enjoy views of three distinct rainbow mountains and the Ausangate glacier without much walking.

Discover the Rainbow Mountains of Palccoyo, a more accessible alternative to the famous Vinicunca (Seven Colors Mountain). Spread across more than 9,000 hectares, the landscape dazzles with natural rainbow like hues, creating a vibrant and mystical atmosphere. This tour not only lets you admire this unique geological wonder but also includes visits to other breathtaking sites nearby, making it a complete and unforgettable day trip from Cusco. Perfect for travelers seeking stunning scenery, photography opportunities, and a memorable adventure without the long trek or extreme altitude challenges of Vinicunca.

Most rainbow mountain day trips from Cusco visit one mountain. This one visits three places. The first is Pallay Punchu, a ridge of sharp striped rock fins above the village of Layo, at 4,770 metres. The walk to the top takes about 45 minutes from the parking area. The better known Vinicunca stands 266 metres higher and takes around an hour and a half on foot. The second is Raqchi. The Temple of Wiracocha held the largest roofed building the Inca are known to have built. A central adobe wall still stands around twelve metres high, with more than a hundred round stone storehouses behind it. The third is Checacupe, where three bridges cross the same river within a few metres of one another. A modern road bridge, a colonial stone arch, and a rebuilt Inca rope bridge woven from grass. Visitor numbers at Pallay Punchu are still low. On most days only a few dozen people reach the ridge.

Escape the crowds with a small-group tour to Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain from Cusco, which offers a quieter experience to the more well-known Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. Hike along uncrowded trails through dramatic Andean landscapes dotted with alpacas and snowcapped peaks, for panoramic views of three mountains with multi-colored mineral-striped slopes while your guide shares insights into Palccoyo's significance in Andean culture.

Pallay Punchu, which means "woven poncho" in Quechua, is the third colored mountain of Cusco and the least visited. Its sharp crests of red, green, ochre, and yellow stripes look like an Andean stone fabric spread over the mountain range. On this private tour, you border the great Laguna Langui–Layo, hike for an hour to the ridges at 4,791 and return to Cusco with your exclusive guide and vehicle, at your own pace and before the groups.
