Q: When is the best time to visit Peyto Lake?

Aim to visit Peyto Lake between May and October. The snow on the path to the viewing point usually melts in late spring, but you still may encounter snowy conditions high up in the mountains. The hiking conditions are much more ideal in the summer,and the lake turns a beautiful blue color from glacial runoff this time of year.

Q: How long is the trail at Peyto Lake?

The trail around Peyto Lake is just around 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers), and it’s considered an easy, 30-minute walk. The elevation isn’t high—just around 260 feet (80 meters)—so altitude shouldn’t be a problem. The effort may be low, but the rewards are high: The views from from the Peyto Lake Overlook are truly spectacular.

Q: Can you swim at Peyto Lake?

Yes, you can swin in Peyto Lake, but be prepared for chilly glacial water year-round. The lake freezes in the winter, of course; so if you want to dip your toes (or more) in, aim for the spring or summer months.

Q: Is Peyto Lake worth a visit?

Yes, Peyto Lake and its vibrant blue waters are worth a visit. It’s an easy stop-off for the 30-minute walk to the viewpoint and back—you can easily add the hike to any Banff itinerary. It’s wheelchair and stroller accessible as well, and you can bring your dog if they are on a leash.

This tour was the best part of our trip to banff ! Our tour guide Robbie was nothing short of amazing !!! The van was clean , the group was small enough for it to be personal . Beyond Banff tours is the best!

We had an amazing day! Our tour guide, Quaid, grew up in the area and was an avid hunter. He was absolutely the best guide! Not only did he give us the best tips for getting the great spots for views and pictures, he shared so much information about the area and how to make the most of our visit in the Banff area. Fantastic day trip

Fabulous trip with Beyond Banff. Rob was a fantastic driver/tour guide. He took us to all the great spots & answered all our questions. Highlight was Peyto Lake, but lots of fabulous stops throughout the tour. Would thoroughly recommend this tour, especially if you like the smaller tour groups.

the tour itself was EXCELLENT and tess was a wonderful tour guide. but if you book this, contact radventures directly to order lunch and rent equipment like snowshoes and skates. you cannot do these things through viator and you cannot do them after you've left. but there's no place on the tour to get lunch. either bring your own or order directly through the tour company.

Peyto Lake is a must for first-time visitors to the Icefields Parkway and Canada’s Rocky Mountain parks.
It’s about a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the lookout point.
There is a washroom facility near the parking lot.
There is a drop-off point closer to the viewing platform (via a short, level path). Follow the signs for tour buses and limited mobility access.
