Easy to follow guide and interesting content to learn about York. Good to do at your own pace, i do recommend it.

Really enjoyed this audio guide. Worked so well!
Loved the map and how it automatically turn on as we walk
Gary_A, Oct 2025
Very easy to use. Great information and stories. Added a great deal to our enjoyment in visiting the city
Caron_S, Sep 2025
Great way to see the history of York. Definitely recommend this walking tour. You can stop along the way and then pick up where you left off.
Allison_S, Sep 2025
We really enjoyed the historical walking tour because we could take it at our own pace and it was lovely to have our own personal guy. Just write in our ear.
Stuart_M, Mar 2025
A really informative tour that took us to places we would not have thought about. Very clear guide that can be done at your own pace.
Gregor_W, Jan 2025
The app works well. Easy to install and follow. Informative and convenient. Also easy to adapt to accommodate route closures owing to river flooding!

Thank you
It was very nice experience.
It would be better to hear more details about the buildings, and more stories.

For two people who are fairly computer literate it took us well over an hour to load the app and the tour. We set off and immediately found that we couldn’t get the narrative to play. We also weren’t using headphones and found we couldn’t tell whether to look at the map or listen to the narrative. We stopped for lunch and I was pleased that it prompted me to stop the tour to save my battery. When we tried to start the tour it wanted us to resume from where we left off and remained confused the rest of the tour. We both ran out of phone battery having started at 100%. It’s a good concept but so inflexible and clunky. Also the narratives were very brief. I would not recommend.

Hi there,
I'm sorry that you were unhappy with your experience. When you were having technical difficulties, did you contact VoiceMap support via email or telephone? We are contactable by both telephone and email, so if you have technical difficulties, please reach out to us so we can identify what is going wrong.
Again, I'm sorry about the poor experience you had.

Enjoyed the tour - no nonsense but very informative. Got lost near the river but managed to salvage using the map guide

Excellent tour. Really informative and funny. The guide was great and super knowledgeable. Would recommend.
Patrycja_E, Mar 2024
It was well guided and covered all key points worth noting of York. This was our first time using self-guided audio tour and it really worked for us. We will definitely try it in other cities and countries.
Lorna_F, Mar 2024
James shared some memorable stories, very evocative. We felt he was walking with us, at our pace, and always had time for a stop at a cafe!
Michael_P, Mar 2024
The tour helped us to understand the connection of York with certain historical events and people and being able to see their mark on York. Plus it highlighted places we have never noticed before or known about…yet walked past many times previously!
Stacey_B, Jan 2024
Loved it! Easy to follow, informative and concise with little snippets and alleyways we'd have never seen otherwise. Did it with two kids as well (aged 10 & 7) and it was good for them too. Highly recommend as you can go at your own pace, stop when you fancy it and resume when ready.

Great little tour after download all good saw parts of York I definitely would have missed with out it
Christine_A, Sep 2023
This audio tour was an absolute delight! We discovered so many places tucked away that we never would have seen otherwise! Love the flexibility of the tour, we could pause at any time and rejoin. The narrator was clear, knowledgable and wonderful to listen to. So happy we chose to do this!
Stephanie_R, Sep 2023
This was really informative and took you all over York, really interesting. The bit after the pub doesn’t tell you where to go next and we got a little lost at that part but overall it was very interesting and I would certainly use the app again.
Anita_C, Aug 2023
Absolutely great! We bought this guide after fleeing from an awful live guided walk, and it was everything we wanted. Concise, interesting and relevant information. Fascinating and funny stories. It takes you every must-see in the city (though not necessarily inside them). We are already planning to use the app in a different city this weekend. PS: We found it quite complicated to access the guide, as we needed to download two different apps and search long and hard for the activation code.

We were excited for this self guided tour. However, early in the tour we were to walk through a gate-which was locked. We couldn’t figure out a go around and soon lost hope. I’m sure it would have been good had we been able to complete.
Response from Host, Jul 2023
Hi Erin
We're sorry to hear that you weren't able to complete your tour. While our tours are published by local journalists, filmmakers, historians and tour guides in over 350 destinations, we don’t always know about sudden road works or business closures. This is hardly ever a problem, but if it becomes one for you, please get in touch and tell us.
Keep well,
Alicia

We were able to stop/start as we wished and made the tour last for several hours as we wandered the city updating our knowledge. It was easy to follow the directions to get to each destination. The city information given in the audio was great
Carolynn_B, May 2023
We enjoyed the whole trip and found our way easily! Thanks for all the interesting facts. What a wonderful city to do an audio tour in!
Peter_G, May 2023
Excellent tour guide which you control timings of which helped to avoid the rain showers when I did it. Very easy to start audio at any point, even if the GPS drops out & the app tells you to refer to the map. Not essential to use GPS if you want to operate the app manually instead of leaving it to run automatically. A great way to not only learn about the history of York, but get a feel for where places are in relation to eachother.
Jennifer_R, Apr 2023
Historical details and context setting made the stories come alive. Great delivery by the narrator. Have backup battery and pay attention to the map in low-signal parts of the old town.
Karen_T, Apr 2023
All of it, the ghost story was good, and information about the Minster. I think you could have included Dick Turpin though, the notorious highwayman.
William_S, Oct 2022
Liked it, without it we would have missed out on a lot of places worth seeing/learning about. It was a bit glitchy at one point but that may well have been my phone reception
robin_f, Jul 2022
An excellent way to see York no problems with technology and able to pause and stop for refreshments a real bonus looking forward to similar tours in other city’s
Robert_B, Mar 2022
Good way of walking along paths you might not think it’s ok to go through-a little light on facts though.
James_B, Mar 2022
The tour gave a good route to follow. It allowed us to take in the sights and find things we would otherwise have missed.
We felt that the tour was very light on information - delivering it in one go with long periods of silence.
Running the tour separately across 5 people’s phones was a little problematic as the voice clips play based on you hitting a specific location - nobody’s phones seemed to agree on this, so the entire group was spread along the street listening at different times, meaning it was hard to speak or discuss anything without interrupting someone.
I wouldn’t do it again, but the route was good.
TOMOKO_K, Mar 2022
I could stop by shops I fancied during the audio guide tour. So I saved much time to go back and shop around there.
