Horrible Guide

Greg_G, Aug 2025
Hiking Mt Agung was an amazing experience. It is absolutely not easy, and we suffered as two people who are very fit experienced hikers, but in the end was still very rewarding.. Our issue with this hike was our guide, whose name escapes me because he barely introduced himself or interacted with us the entire 13 hours we were out there with him. He started off at a blazing pace and barely slowed down when asked multiple times. We figured we had a timeline to hit which is why he did that, but we ended up waiting for an hour 3/4 the way up so we would not be waiting around for sunrise in the cold at the summit. So really he just wanted to do his own thing. He would speed ahead, then wait for us and make us feel like we were holding him back. He didn’t care at all about our safety when we were navigating some treacherous parts in the dark. On the way down it felt like we were annoying him by being “slow”. Turns out we were one of the first groups up and down so it wasn’t us. Making it worse was observing other guides staying with their clients, giving advice and just generally having normal conversation in broken English. My partner hiked up Rinjani 2 years ago and had a completely different experience, her guide was friendly, supportive and encouraging. Conclusion: we highly recommend the hike, and strongly suggest to Viator to not assign this guide to others. We wish we had gone through a local recommendation rather than Viator.

You won’t regret it

Wow! This hike was an incredible experience. The first time I’ve ever done anything like it so I had no expectations, what I can say is, it was tough! There’s a point where the mind takes over and makes you believe you can’t do it, but of course you can! So that was definitely one of the biggest lessons out of the hike. It reminded me of my resilience and how strong I am! You are in really safe hands, your tour guide will know this mountain like the back of his hand so don’t have fear. We really liked learning from our guide about the mountain and thought it was really special to see the offerings given to the gods at every stop point. Even when it was hard, we all had a laugh and there’s nothing that can’t be solved when you share a coffee with each other. I would highly recommend this hike. You will learn new things about nature, about Bali, and about yourself while doing it! Id say one of the most important things is to have the proper shoes and clothing… we didn’t and I think it would have been a bit less of a challenge should we have been better prepared!

To the ones who likes challenge

1. What a experience! Once to reach the top you’ll see the path to summit which is breathtaking. It seems resembling the path to heaven. The panoramic view is also mind blowing. You can feel you are three times higher than mt Batur! Mt Rinjani is also detectable even though it’s in the other island!! 2. I would never did this without my guide Ketut. Ketut is completely reliable. He knows the best way to climb safest route in every steps. Don’t worry if your pace is not good enough. Ketut consistently checks you and waits patiently until you come close enough. I strongly recommend him as your companion. 3. Ketut buda is driver to this tour who picked me up from the hotel and back. He comes in time and always ready to drive you home. He drives safe and friendly at the same time.

Amazing experience

My first trekking experience and i am proud of myself for reaching the summit. It is probably the most challenging thing i have done in my entire life but i am glad i did it.

PACK AND PREPARE - for the best day of your life

kiara_m, Jul 2024
Being more detailed because the reviews did not prepare us! We really had to look at the photos - people’s clothes choices etc This hike was the toughest we've ever tackled. Good hiking shoes (we wore runners - big mistake) You NEED gloves, a large backpack with essentials like water/food (they might give you if they don’t think you have enough even though they pack a lot for all of you), and layers of clothing were a must. Rock climbing without ropes for most of the journey made it even more challenging. Going up was just as hard as coming down. But it was all worth it for the incredible views, the camaraderie among the guides and drivers who stayed connected via walkie-talkies, and the motivation they provided was sweet. Our guide, GEDE, was down-to-earth and experienced, making the experience truly special. His been doing this hike Since he was 9. Taking it slow, communicating with your guide, asking for breaks, and enjoying the stunning scenery along the way were key to making it through. Despite the freezing temperatures at the summit, the sense of accomplishment made it one of the best days of our lives. Overall, this hike was a real test of our abilities, but the reward of reaching the top was unforgettable. It's an experience we'll always cherish and recommend to others looking for a challenge 100%.

Top of Bali

Wonderful experience, the driver Ketut Bude was prompt and picked me in time from hotel, he was very safe driver and than trek started around 11:30 pm my guide was so nice that he took care that I follow all safety while climbing as it was raining all the way till top and he kept explaining when I must use hiking poles and when hand as last bit with rock you have to use hand. Trek hike up is around 8.5 km and with slow pace it will take 6 hrs hike. Thanks to my guide for his guidance all the way up and down back to start point

Wonderful views on Mount Agung

Elise_P, May 2024
A great hike which starts early during the night. The track is very steep and the views are worth it. Do not hesitate to start later if you don't want to do a 2h break waiting for the sunrise. The organization with both taxi and guide went very well. I highly recommend it.

Very memorable experience, thankyou!

Zeke_C, May 2024
Great trip overall, supported by easy transport to and from the hotel and a very attentive and safety conscious guide. I found the climb challenging on the way up but well worth it once reaching the summit. A very memorable experience. The walk back down was easier, be sure to take good hiking shoes with plenty of grip.

Challenge yourself and you will be rewarded with an amazing view.

Simone_G, May 2024
The hike great, the guides very kind and fun also the driver Ketut Bude was very nice. Make sure to bring some snacks and plenty of water

The long way to the summit of Mount agung

Sandra_R, Feb 2024
Appreciation to the tour guide to bring us until the top. They do this multiple times a week so respect for that. I felt though that there was no great and motivating vibe from the guides, probably because they are tired and it's understandable. We had some breaks throughout going up which was very good but it would be nice if the guides would generally communicate a bit more with the group and say things like how long the break is going to be, how long from that point to the top and so on. All those things would make the whole experience more motivational and clear. Not much interaction with the group. If this could improve it would become a better trip. It's was an average experience.

Great experience! But very challenging!

Maria_V, Jan 2024
The guide Darta was really good! Professional, in great physical health, calm and caring. I can recommend this to anyone who is in good health and looking for a bit of an ultra experience.

Alex_B, Oct 2023
The hike itself was stunning - the tour… a joke! The guide did not engage with us at all, and we were walked up there too quickly so we had to wait below the summit for 2 hours in the cold so we didn’t miss sunrise! There was no information about the mountain or the area given, I was expecting a lot more from the “guide”. Unsure where my money went

Hard, dangerous but beautiful hike

Sarah_B, Oct 2023
Very hard trip, a lot of climbing and dangerous roads but the view and the experience were definitely worth it!

Difficult but worth it

Andrew_P, Jan 2023
This is a tough hike. It is a constant uphill on what would best be described as a angled rocky stream bed. We were picked up at midnight and started hiking at two. The guides were quiet with limited English but they were caring and attentive. It took us four hours to go the three miles and 4000 feet of elevation gain. The sky was mixed with fog and clouds and the views were wonderful. Coming down it was lightly raining and a bit slippery. The rock is grippy but loose in places. I think it would be possible to not have a guide but for the minimal expense it was well worth it to have a clear route and help if something happened. On the way down the forest was stunning and a bit easier to walk the trail. A great Bali adventure but be ready for it.

This is an adventure that...

Craig_B, Nov 2022
This is an adventure that I will never forget. It was perfect from the very beginning when the driver Rodih collected me from my hotel. The drive took 2 hours but talking to Rodih, joking and listening to his stories the drive literally felt like it took 20 minutes. What a credit to the company. When I arrived at the base of Mt Agung I was met with my mountain guide Gede Darta. I immediately felt like I was in safe hands and I was correct. Darta has such incredible knowledge of the mountain. He told me that he climbs the mountain twice a week for the past 10 years!! He stayed at a good pace similar to my own. There was a section near the top of the Mt Agung that I got scared and didn't think I could go any further. Darta told me to relax and that we could go back down a little and sit and have breakfast there whilst we watched the sunrise. He was not disappointed and he was happy that I had come this far. Thankfully I got over my fear pretty quickly and I wanted to continue. So Darta took my bag off my back and he carried my bag the rest of the way to the top to make me lighter. I felt bad that he had to carry my bag but it was no problem to him and he didn't mind as he cared more about my safety! I didn't want to spend long at the top as I have a fear of heights and I was feeling very dizzy and nauseated. So after Darta made some coffee and we ate some fruit and bread we made our way back down the mountain. I highly recommend asking for Darta to be your guide. He was so calm the whole way up and the whole way down. Very level headed and never loud. We passed by some other guides on the route who seemed loud and obnoxious and playing loud music on their speakers. But Darta was very peaceful and relaxed. His relaxed demeanour made things so much better for me to be able to stay calm. When we arrived back at the finish point I was met by my driver Rodih. I had planned on sleeping on the drive back to the hotel but once I started chatting with Rodih I did not want to sleep. I really enjoyed talking to him and I really enjoyed his stories and asking him questions about his Balinese heritage and local culture. Both Darta and Rodih are an incredible asset to this company and I wish them both many years of success working as tour guides. Thank you

Great experience on a challenging hike

Matthew_B, Jul 2022
My driver and guide made for a fantastic experience on my hike to the top of Agung at sunrise. Driver picked me up in Canggu around 9pm and we made our way to the base of Agung, where I met my guide. We started the hike around midnight. My guide was awesome - he matched my pace and I never felt pressured to slow down or go faster. We got near the top about 90 minutes earlier than expected, so my guide set up camp and a fire to keep warm while we ate. The views at the top while the sun rose were breathtaking. I packed a headlamp (guide brought extras, just in case), 2L water and the driver supplied me with food, extra water, and the guide had all the gear to set up camp. Overall, I felt more than equipped and in good hands of the guide to complete the trek. It was great fun, would definitely recommend it for those that want a more challenging hike than Batur without many tourists. On the way up, I think we encountered at most a dozen tourists and maybe a half-dozen made it to the top (others either turned back or set up to camp on the mountain). A+ would recommend if you're a hiking enthusiast visiting Bali :)

Hard but worth it

Meg, Jun 2022
The hardest hike in Bali but the views are worth it! The adventure began for us in Ubud at 10pm; it took about and hour and 20 minutes to get to the starting point of the tour. We started hiking in the night at 11:20 PM. It started off humid and warm. We definitely were sweating going uphill for the forest portion. We then passed into more a rocky portion and as we ascended there, it started getting colder. We got up about 45 minutes from the summit and our guide stopped us; he had collected a large amount of sticks from the forest area and was able to make a fire. We warmed up by the fire and had breakfast and coffee/tea. Nothing fancy—boiled eggs, cookies, bread, and jam but it was delicious after 4-5 hours of hiking. We had gone up fairly quickly so we all stopped there for about an hour and a half and let the other groups catch up. Around 5:15 am we went up the rest of the way to the summit and had an incredibly beautiful view of the sunrise. We then walked down (terrifying to see our trail and how narrow it is in the daylight without headlamps). It took about 4 hours to get to the bottom—we ended the hike at 10am. Our guide was absolutely the best—he was knowledgeable and kind. Our driver (different than our guide) was also really great. He enthusiastically picked us up at 10pm at our hotel and then took the long way home for us to stop at a coffee plantation and try Luwak coffee—thank you Batki! He was a very good driver and knew his way around the roads. Overall this was a memorable hike—sunrise on the highest point in Bali was definitely our highlight of our trip. Tips: Pack layers—it’s warm in the forest but freezing the higher you go and very windy. Be prepared to get cold at the top. Our guide was nice enough to lend our gloves. One guy even wore shorts and his guide gave him something to help cover his legs at the fire stop. Bring atleast 3L of water per person. Our guide gave us water because we didn’t have enough. Sneakers. Do not wear sandals. And try to make sure there’s good tread on your shoes—Bali and particularly the forest sees a lot of rain regularly. The way down gets very slippery—you’ll want good grip Don’t underestimate going down; because of the rain, it’s easy to fall going down and injure yourself. Go slow It didn’t even rain for us our hiking day but because it’s generally wet in the forest, there’s a great deal of mud. Overall I would highly recommend this trip to someone who is physically fit and ready for a challenge!

Super

Britta_G, Sep 2023

Top.
