Itinerary
Take a luxurious train trip through the island of Saint Kitts as you travel along one of the Caribbean’s first scenic railways, finishing with a coach bus tour of the island’s key sights. Whether you’re a train lover or simply looking for a unique way to explore this tropical island, this train excursion is a great option.
Start your trip with a pickup from your Basseterre or Frigate Bay hotel, continuing to the train to begin your ride. The sumptuously-appointed rail cars feature a range of amenities, including beautifully-designed interiors, a full-service bar, and bathrooms. The car’s upper level features a viewing platform where you can enjoy unobstructed views of the island’s soaring mountain scenery and thick, green cane fields. Meanwhile down below on the lower level, you’ll enjoy air-conditioning and sublime views through the large windows. You’ll also be able to pick from a selection of included beverages during your ride.
Watch as your train pulls out and begins its journey winding its way along the edge of Mount Liamuiga. As you travel you’ll be able to see a variety of scenery like secret black sand beaches, the ruins of decaying plantations and sturdy iron bridges (one of which spans more than 300 feet (90m) over a large valley). The train also passes through a number of towns on the way, including Saddlers Village and Mansion Village, flanked by fields of fruit.
Listen to commentary about the island and your route, hearing tales like about the “Last Railway in the West Indies,” a train that was used to transport sugar cane from the island’s plantations to its main sugar factory in Basseterre. You’ll also be serenaded with catchy folk songs and tunes performed by the St. Kitts Railway Choir.
Upon finishing your scenic train ride, climb aboard a sightseeing coach for a 12 mile (19km) tracing Island Main Road. Among the sites you’ll pass are Brimstone Hill Fortress and a number of small towns and villages on the way back to Basseterre.
Please note: there is no reserved seating. All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

This train ride is a great view of the St Kitts countryside, with a history lesson and other info included.

My daughter sometimes gets sick on boats, so we avoided any type of boating activities on our trip. The train was extremely shaky and bumpy, and she immediately felt sick, so the rest of the tour lost its shine for all of us. There’s an upper (open) level and a lower level with windows, but the windows were not clear enough to take nice pictures. There were traditional dancers, who did a great job and were fun to watch, plus rum punch and a sugarcane cookie. It was hard to hear the tour guide through the speakers, so we would have gotten more from a person narrating on each car, or an upgrade to the PA system. Beautiful scenery, but not for the weak of stomach!

Our cruise line was unable to dock in St Kitts this morning due to high winds.. the company refunded us in full even though I missed the excursion. A fantastic gesture of goodwill. Please use this company-agent when travelling to St Kitts..

Beautiful way to wmjoy the mountains , Caribbean , and the local country side , the service and entertainment was awesome

If it rains there will likely be disruption to the trip. We waited over an hour for the final passengers to arrive at the starting point. The upstairs carriages had not been kept dry.
Annabel_D, Mar 2025
Expensive. The smell of diesel is very strong whilst the train is moving. We were denied permission to sit in another carriage. The train carriages needs maintenance and a lick of paint.
Angela_T, Feb 2025
Cars rock a bit, views/info was good on the train. 2 drinks, one small cake/snack. 45 mins for the bus tour part. Cost is the only negative.
Ann_C, Feb 2025
Whilst we enjoyed the scenic train trip it is very old and broke down twice during our journey. The 3 hour trip almost took 5 hours.
David_M, Jan 2025
Not recommended. Our train was stopped on the tracks for 55 minutes. Ride is very rocky and uneven, and even feels unsafe. Track is 100 years old and has not been adequately maintained. Maintenance seems to be clearing the brush from the side of the tracks. Sound system was completely inaudible from inside. Staff try hard to please, but train/bus ride is just not worth the expense. Such a shame!

This was well worth the price Our driver was very knowledgeable and did a fantastic job.
Donald Freeman was our driver

We really enjoyed this tour. It starts with a bus trip about the island, history and different sections. This was the best part of the day. Our guide, Mr. Rodger’s, was very knowledgeable and fun! The train ride was also nice but we sat inside a car and it was difficult to understand what the guide was saying. In all, if you want to see more of St. Kitts, this a wonderful experience.

There weren't any they didn't turn up
Will not use viator again, we did our utmost to contact and company never turned up

It was an average train ride, you can get a much better tour from the cab drivers on the island. The drinks were alright, staff wasn’t very friendly and you don’t get close to very much on the tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept you interested in all the history.

Great scenic ride...beautiful views...narration was exceptional...loved the dancers..lovely adventure
Mike_H, Aug 2024
Was a little disappointed at first. The first part of the tour is on a bus and second half is on the train I didn’t realize that when booking. But it turned out to be the perfect combination and way to see most of the island. Drinks were included on the train and there were even some local dancers to entertain as well as the beautiful sites.

The train ride through the country side and small towns was amazing. Allowed us to see not only the tourist part of the island but where the residents of the island live. The rocking of the train as it went along the tracks just added to experience. We had a great time.

Bus ride to the train, Shawn (aka-Bruno) was funny, knowledgeable. His tour of St. Kitts was amazing
Cathryn_S, May 2024
The tour begins with a short bus ride through Basseterre and around the Caribbean side of the island. Our driver was friendly and gave a brief history as we rode through. The train ride took about an hour and 45 mins, it connects all the old sugar mill plantations. Sit on the top level, its covered and breezy, and every angle is a great view. The host keeps the drinks flowing, and you can sit back and enjoy the best way to see so much of the island!

The 45 minute bus tour was very good! Clear audio and bus driver was very informative! The train ride was nice but audio was terrible! We couldn’t hear anything that was said clearly ! Service of drinks were very good!
Katie_G, Mar 2024
Pickup from hotel was very smooth. Driver arrived exactly on time and was really nice.
Bus tour was very informative.
Train tour was nice, drinks were constantly getting served and they were quite strong!
Only let down was that there were far too many people on the train, you were practically sitting on each others knees and didn’t really have room to turn around and admire the views.
If they maybe had 5 less people on each carriage it would have been a lot better.

Three stars because meeting them at the start was a real hassle.
The journey on the train was brilliant, and the coach ride getting to the start was good, with a very lively and chatty driver who told us lots about the island. Meeting our tour when we left our cruise ship was very difficult. We were told to look for signs for the scenic railway, but the only signs like that were for the P&O Cruise official excursion, and said nothing about trips booked independently. Eventually somebody at the cruise terminal advised us to wait with the ships tour group, which we did. Somebody there looked at our confirmation email from Viatour and eventually said we should join the big crowd from the ship. Once we were on the coach everything was great, but we had an anxious time getting to that point. We felt let down by Viatour and by their local agent Kisco, as they had no signs or people there to help us.

Interesting. Stopping at key points would have been better. Bus portion of tour was better. Bus driver was great historian
Dave_B, Mar 2024
Train ride was marvelous. Vendor was nowhere to be found. Took 30 minutes to find the bus. Vendor did not answer the phone.
Jeanne_L, Feb 2024
Sharing with family - fun experience. Great way to see other parts of the island. Nothing more to add
Mary_B, Feb 2024
The train ride was awesome. We thought we were being picked up at 9:30 but it was 9. We were about ready though anyway but being late made us miss the train. Not a problem, we did the van ride first.
Adele_G, Jan 2024
The staff were very efficient and friendly but the cost at 200.00 per person was excessive compared to what we received.
Priscilla_G, Jan 2024
It was fun to see and learn about the island Out tour guide on the van part (Warner) was the best!!! Suggestions: sit up top but NOT sit in the first car. The fumes from the engine blow back and they aren’t pleasant.
Drinks were a nice touch!
Peter_S, Jan 2024
The ride was enjoyable. The scenery of the Caribbean and country side is nice. The service was very friendly and generous with their time.
Too many people on the upper deck for comfortable seating. We were squeezed together too tight.
One of our group sat down stairs due to the situation.
Almost all of the audio was in German. At the beginning of the adventure, the language was in German then followed by English. That ended 15 minutes into the trip.
We missed everything that would have been enjoyable to know about this side trip.
Almost everyone was from a German speaking country.
I would have liked to learned what my German speaking friends now know.
hat was disappointing.
Garry_N, Nov 2023
Not on the cruise ship so treated slightly differently. Waited 40mins for ‘cruisers’ to be deposited. That was fine by us, could have been twice as long apparently. It was all quite lovely. Informative. Managed three cocktails, but it was SO EXPENSIVE. Compared to the catamaran all day tour… the pirates ride trains not ships.
Kendel_K, Nov 2023
We had such a fantastic time on the train. I am a professional photographer, and I got so many amazing pictures on the train! The entertainment was exciting, and a neat taste of their culture! And our tour guide was funny and entertaining as well!
