Itinerary

Get a taste for the many cultural and historical sights in Denpasar during this half-day excursion with a local guide. There’s no better way to take a deep dive into the rich cultural heritage of Bali, both historical and contemporary, than via this exploration of the island’s most populous city.

Start your trip with pickup from your hotel by your guide. From there, continue on to the historic Puputan Square situated in the Denpasar’s city center. This busy gathering place is a favorite of locals and travelers alike, thanks to its mix of open space and intriguing monuments. Check out the memorial to the Balinese family, which commemorates the battle of the rajas of Badung against the invading Dutch army in 1906.

Continue from there to Bali’s Museum, just adjacent to the former royal palace. Wander the museum’s collection, admiring its range of artifacts covering everything from 20th-century art to pre-historic times. The museum is also home to a range of items celebrating Indonesian culture such as musical instruments, sculptures, theatrical masks, textiles, and paintings. Keep your eyes out for exhibits dedicated to Balinese tooth filing as well as marriage and cremation events.

Proceed next to the colorful Pasar Badung, a sprawling market where locals head to sell and bargain for everything from food to home goods. This pasar (an Indonesian word for ‘market’) is the largest on Bali, and features such foodstuffs as spices, fruits and other edibles sourced from across the island. After honing your bargaining skills, head to a nearby supermarket (the Indonesian equivalent of a department store) to wander the aisles and purchase food (at your own expense).

Make your last stop of the day at the Bali Art Center, which hosts a permanent collection of wood carvings and modern art. The center’s collection is located in a traditional Balinese-style structure and also includes exhibits on the island’s architecture. Finish your excursion with a return trip back to your Bali hotel.

Some places were closed because of a public holiday. My guide and driver worked together to find some alternatives. Torrential rain made it hard to wander outside.

Response from Host, Mar 2025

Thank you for your feedback! We apologize for the inconvenience caused by some places being closed due to the public holiday, but we’re glad to hear that your guide and driver worked together to find alternative options for you. We also understand that the torrential rain made exploring outside challenging, and we appreciate your understanding. We hope to provide you with a more enjoyable experience on your next tour with us!

Non of the three tours we booked had water for us. A disappointment in the heat

The Museum was interesting but high steps for oldies like us. The food market held no interest for us

Really good, knowledgeable guide who clearly loved the city and wanted to show it off, explained loads on the way round, didn't take us anywhere to try and get us to buy from favoured vendors, even going round the traditional market which was an incredible sight, there was no unwanted sales approaches. 4 out of 5 simply because it was a bit strange to finish at a shopping centre, would have preferred more sight seeing.

Another great day out. Our guide was excellent and very informative. Traffic is an issue and the heat and humidity had us running back to the tour bus to recover in the air conditioning. June to Aug would be the best time of year to visit Bali as this is the dry season.

The basics of the capital with museums. Bonus is that my guide could explain everything in the museums.

I was the only guest for the tour. We managed our time to see more than what was indicated in the itinerary. Instead of a half day, we extended up to 3pm, of course, with additional fee but it was worth it! Great tour.
