Guide was very knowledgeable and was willing to answer all our questions. Great way to see Mt Rushmore and the night view and stars were quiet and beautiful
Response from Host, Oct 2024
Howdy Ruby -
We have had great weather for star gazing this summer and it continues still. I'm glad you enjoyed your evening. Thank you fro the review. Be Well - Rich
Carol_S, Oct 2024
Shane was our tour guide. Very informative, and enjoyable to be with. We loved this tour. Enjoyed the movie and bringing all the veterans up on stage.
Response from Host, Oct 2024
Howdy Carol - Thank you for your Night Lighting review. Honoring the veterans is very important. I'm happy you enjoyed your tour with Shane.

Mabel_E, Sep 2024
Great experience. Shane is a great tour guide. He is very knowledgeable of the history of Mt Rushmore, Iron Mtn Tunnels and introduced an app to the group that outlined the various constellations. Shane, thank you for the experience.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Hi Mabel -
Thank you for taking time to review your tour. We have been fortunate this season to have clear evenings for viewing the sky's. Be Well - Rich
Lisa_M, Sep 2024
We were lucky to share a very moving lighting experience at Mt Rushmore. The tour guide was very knowledgeable of the area, and astute in the history of Mt Rushmore. All of which made for a very memorable night.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Howdy Lisa - I'm happy you enjoyed your evening tour. It's a wonderful presentation by the Park Services that does will to honour our vets. Thanks for your review. Be Well - Rich
Mitzi_M, Sep 2024
The lighting of the president's was very moving. Shane was very informative on our tour. It was unfortunate that we had a full moon so we couldn't star gaze. But other than that we all enjoyed our tour.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Hi Mitzi -
Thanks for taking time to review. I'm glad you enjoyed your tour with Shane. I hope you can return and visit more of the Hills. Be Well - Rich
Nancy_W, Sep 2024
Great experience, but awful booking through Viator. If doing this again, I’d book directly through the vendor. I don’t know who with at is, but Googling it would probably get you an answer.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Hi Nancy -
I'm glad you enjoyed your tour. Hope you can return someday and see more of the Hills.

Prefacing our tour was a 1-afternoon-earlier telephone call asking us to change our scheduled night date, which we were unable to do; the reason for this request, we were told, was that teachers and others were returning to school, making arranging a tour guide difficult (NOTE: we booked our tour in early June, more than 3 months before!). Our tour guide picked us up (8 clients), and clearly did not want to be leading our tour. We arrived at Mt. Rushmore 2 hours before the ceremony, and he announced that he would meet us at the van after the lighting ritual ended. He then said that anyone wanting to sightsee the place could meet him near the entrance; he was nearly completely uninformative. He never told any of us where the main event was to occur (it was in the amphitheater), or how to navigate the site to see its visitor attractions. We exchanged comments with one of the other 3 couples in our group, who initiated the discussion of these serious disappointments. The National Park Service gave an excellent presentation. We returned to the van, and the tour guide was in a much better mood. Unfortunately, the van almost immediately broke down in the parking lot (of course, we do not think this particular mishap was the tour guide’s fault); we had to wait an hour for a replacement van (its driver was very pleasant and helpful), and then we had to return to Rapid City without completing the lighted tunnels at night, or the star gazing (one of the couples had a very early departure flight the next morning). We did not get what we paid for! We also were deprived of a USA experience we now will never have a chance to have.
Response from Host, Sep 2024
Hi Daniel - I appologize for the van breaking down. And I'm sorry you didn't get to see the tunnels.
I'm glad you enjoyed the Mt Rushmore Night Lighting Ceremony presentedy by the Rangers.
FYI - The next day I issued you and the others a 50% refunded for your tour. Be Well - Rich
Robert_T, Aug 2024
We had to call the third party on the night of the scheduled pick and they informed us that Viator did not notify them of our reservation. The three party were very upset but jumped through hoops to get or trip completed. The third party was excellent; not so much Viator
Response from Host, Aug 2024
Hi Robert - I think you are rating Open Top Tours on your disappointment with the "Third Party Seller".
But, I'm glad you got to enjoy the evening tour and hope you have time to visit the Hills again.
Be Well - Rich
For our future guests - Roberts group contacted Open Top the evening of the tour. We found that the 'Third Party Seller" had not informed us about Roberts reservation. So we hurriedly put together a plan that provide Robert and his group a tour that evening.
FYI- We suggest you contact your tour provider in advance to confirm details. Third party seller tours can be problematic.
Thanks and Be Well - Rich
dolly_f, Aug 2024
It was very nice, the information at mt Rushmore was interesting. The stars were beautiful and the tour guide was very informative.
The only problem was visitor gave me the wrong pick up place. Had I not known they do not come to this area for pick up, I’d have missed my tour.
Response from Host, Aug 2024
Hi Dolly - Thanks for taking time to review. I'm glad you enjoyed the evening. I'm sorry you received incorrect information from the third party seller. I recommend that all travelers contact the provider of the tours direct - to get the most accurate tour information.
Thanks again Dolly I hope you enjoyed your time in the Hills. Be Well - Rich
Joe_O, Aug 2024
Absolutely wonderful experience, Mike was a fantastic guide. So glad we chose to book this versus doing it ourselves. The Iron Mountain Rd drive was great after the ceremony.
So cool to see the tunnels and Mt Rushmore lit up at night from various locations.
Only feedback would be to make sure description on app is up to date, as it describes another excursion (during the day) in addition to this one, so we were expecting more when we initially booked.
Response from Host, Aug 2024
Howdy Joe - Thanks for taking time to review your tour. I'm glad you enjoyed your time with Mike. Mike is a retired Rapid City elementary principle and is new with us this year, but he is extremely knowledgeable about Mt Rushmore and the Black Hills.
(P.S. I'm attempting to have Viator remove the information you mentioned.) Thanks again and
Be Well - Rich
Beverly_I, Aug 2024
Lighting of Mt Rushmore and ceremony honoring active duty military and veterans. Amazing star- gazing and view of constellations and night view of tunnels!!
Response from Host, Aug 2024
Hi Beverly - I'm very glad you enjoyed your evening tour. The ceremony is excellent for honoring our veterans and the tunnels are really cool at night.
Thanks for your review. Be Well - Rich
Audrey_J, Jul 2024
Jon was an excellent guide, stunning views in the open top van. Highly recommend if I ever go back to South Dakota will definitely do this tour again!
Patti_D, Jul 2024
We had a wonderful tour of Mount Rushmore at night. Our guide, Kevin was so knowledgeable and kind. We went on the evening tour and saw all the historic films and the evening lighting of Mount Rushmore.we also went in a drive that allowed us to see the monument through the tunnels. Then if all that was it enough, we saw the stars in the very clear sky from an open air van. Can’t say enough. It was amazing! Highly recommend
Response from Host, Jul 2024
Howdy Patti -
Thank you for taking time to review. I'm glad you enjoyed the evening. This tour is new for us this year and it has been amazingly popular. Our sliding glass top Sprinter is perfect for the slow drive up Iron Mtn Road after the show. The view through the tunnels looking at the lighted faces is stunning and the stargazing has been great.
Thanks again. Be Well - Rich
Sean_R, Jul 2024
It was a great time, my family had a blast. Our driver/guide, Charlie, was amazing. He provided so much great information that was better than us just going to the monument on our own. And after the lighting ceremony, he took us on a tour of the tunnels on Iron Mountain Road which was beautiful at night with the stars out. I would absolutely recommend this, it was well worth the price.
Response from Host, Jul 2024
Hi Sean - I'm glad you enjoyed your evening tour with Charlie. Charlie has been a guide with Open Top Tours for many years and as a retired teacher loves sharing the history of the Hills. We have been fortunate to have had great weather this spring . . . with a clear sky the stargazing has been great. Thank you for your review. Be Well - Rich
Corinne_P, Oct 2023
The whole experience was stunning - the lighting, honoring our Veterans and the tunnels after to stargaze. Charlie was an amazing tour guide = so knowledgeable. Much more knowledgeab le than our tour guide on our tour
Response from Host, Oct 2023
Hi Corinne -
I'm very happy you enjoyed the Mt Rushmore lighting. It is a wonderful event that honors our veterans. Charlie is a vet with many years experience and knows well the Black Hills history.
FYI - you were one of the first to experience our new Night Lighting added value tour. We take you to Mt Rushmore for the lighting - and then onto Iron Mtn Road with the one way tunnels looking back at the lighted Faces. And if the clouds are in our favor, we pull open the glass top roof of the Mercedes Sprinter van and spend some time StarGazing.
Thank you very much for your kind review. Be Well - Rich
Susan_W, Sep 2023
We were blessed with one of the best tour guides ever !! Joe made our trip to Mount Rushmore even better with his wealth of knowledge of the area.
Joe went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable. He walked with us to the Monument seating area, and he pointed out an area that we could escape from the rain if necessary.
The Iron Mountain Tour that followed the lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore was awesome !! Viewing the unique Pigtail bridges, the narrow tunnels, and the stars at night was made best by viewing from the open top Mercedes Benz van. Add a blanket supplied by Joe, and a chilly but comfortable breeze, and how could you not enjoy this tour?!
We certainly enjoyed it, and highly recommend it. If you are really lucky, your tour guide will be Joe. He is friendly, and fun !! Enjoy the tour !!!
Response from Host, Sep 2023
Howdy Susan -
Joe said he had a great time with your group at the Mt Rushmore Night Ceremony. I'm glad you enjoyed it, it is something new we just offered this last month. The season for that tour ends soon but we will be bringing it back in late May 2024. Thank you for your kind review I will make sure to share it with Joe. Be Well - Rich
Gregory_C, Aug 2023
We were waiting for the shuttle. When it was 10 minutes late I checked my email and they canceled our trip because of not having enough people on the tour. This after we took a Lyft to our pickup location
Response from Host, Sep 2023
Hi Greg - I messaged you hours prior to departure and explained you were the only two and we require four guests. I also suggested that you contact Lyft in order for you to attend that night. Both our website and Viator inform everyone that there is a minimum number required in order to provide a tour. Be Well - Rich
For Our Future Guests -
Please please please read the information listed about each tour. Not just our company but all reservations you may make. And always contact the provider of the service directly to confirm everything. Third party reservations can be problematic. Thanks and Be Well - Rich
Kathy_R, Aug 2023
Great history lessons from our driver Charles. Loved Iron Mountain Tunnels at night. Scary yet awesome to see Mt Rushmore lite while driving through the one lane tunnel that was pitch black!!!
Response from Host, Aug 2023
Hi Kathy -
That is something new we included this season. With the Mt Rushmore Night Ceremony we include a ride up Iron Mtn Road and viewing the faces through the tunnels. I'm happy you enjoyed your tour with Charlie and thank you for taking time for your review. Be Well - Rich
Michael_S, Jun 2022

Response from Host, Jun 2022
Hi Michael -

Glenda_D, Aug 2021
Wow....what a fantastic day! We had the best experience and kudos to our guide, Charlie. I highly recommend this safari to anyone traveling to the area. This is definitely the company to book.
Response from Host, Aug 2021
Hi Glenda -
Thanks for taking time for a review. I'm glad you enjoyed your Jeep Safari tour with Charlie. The Jeep Bison Safari is our most popular tour (even more than Mt Rushmore). We added additional Gladiator Jeeps this spring in order to keep up with demand.
FYI - Because of the Jeep Safari popularity we are expanding our tours to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. Starting 2022 we will be operating out of the town of Medora, providing Jeep tours to the ND Badlands and tours to Teddy Roosevelts old ranch.
Thanks again for your review. Be Well - Rich
Bonita_D, Jun 2021
Riding in the open jeep really allowed us to see the wildlife up close, hear all of the sounds they make and get some great pictures. Our guide, Jim, showed us many more landmarks than we expected to see. We could have driven the route on our own, but would have missed seeing many of the highlights. We got more bang for our buck using the Black Hills Open-Top-Tours for our excursion. Worth every penny! Thanks Rich!
Response from Host, Jun 2021
Hi Bonita -
Thank you for your kind review. I'm very happy you enjoyed your tour with Jim.
Custer State Park is a huge state park (110 sq. miles) and offers a large variety of geography . . . from the lowlands Wildlife Loop to climbing up to the granite spires on Needles Highway. And it has a large number of wildlife (bison, deer, pronghorn, Big Horn sheep, elk, prairie dogs and more).
Thanks again Bonita! I hope you have time to visit the Hills again . . . lots more to see. Be Well - Rich
John_R, Jun 2021
The driver was a little late to pick us up by made it up to us both in time and effort. Great internary including being surround by hundreds of Buffalo at the end of the tour. Only reason I would not give it 5 stars is that the it poured on the way home and there wasn't adequate rain protection in the back (just a tarp). Request Joe. Great guide and person.
Response from Host, Jun 2021
Hi John. I'm very sorry your guide was late. I'm glad Joe was able to provide a good tour for you and your family. To make up for any inconvenience I've made a partial refund to your purchase. And I'm very sorry the weather was so bad that day.
To our guests -
The weather this season has been fluctuating from hot to cold and unexpected showers are occurring. We did not expect the heavy storm that hit that day. We have now exchanged the light tarps for heavy see through plastic tarps. They can be rolled out to cover the top and sides of the Jeep in a few minutes. When not in use they are stored and will not affect the viewing. We are also providing disposable one time ponchos for those that did not bring rain gear.
Guests traveling in the Black Hills this season should think about the ubiquitous 'layered' clothing and include a light rain coat. In a normal season you can expect short afternoon rain showers with temporary temperature drops of 20F. Then sun comes back out and it warms back up.
Thanks John. I appreciate your taking time for your review. Be Well - Rich
