I visited during peak season and since tickets to the park are limited, I definitely would not have been about to enter without the tour guide. I had such a great time walking through the park taking photos with my Nikon and zoom lens. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the wildlife - most of which I wouldn't not have spotted on my own. I was traveling solo but made easy conversation with other people in my group as well as the tour guide. I recommend going in the morning before it gets too hot and then spending the rest of the afternoon on the beach or exploring the park further on your own.
Note- no plastic bottles or aerosol cans, allowed in the park so be sure to bring an aluminum water bottle and spray-pump insect repellent. No food allowed in the park either so eat before entering and/or be prepared to buy snacks at the concessions while inside the park (the smoothies are expensive, but delicious).

Tour guide was okay but there were too many people on the tour and in the park. Also, lots of confusion about whether the tour included park entry.
Our guide William was GREAT!!! It was very impressive how he was able to point out the animals - sloths, iguanas, jesus lizard, sleeping frogs, dragonflies, and more. We wouldn't have been able to see many of them without his expert eyes.
If you go to Manuel Antonio National Park I recommend you go with a guide. Without guidance you won't see any animals.
