What To Expect

Discover one New Zealand's best Great Walks by hiking a portion of the Routeburn Track, situated against the scenic Southern Alps in UNESCO World Heritage–listed Mt. Aspiring National Park. The Routeburn Track is a trekker’s paradise, teeming with snow-capped mountain peaks, ice-carved valleys, and alpine lakes. A moderate level of fitness is required, as you’ll cover up to 13 miles (22 kilometres) over the course of the day.

After morning pickup from your hotel or central meeting point in Queenstown, you’ll travel by mini-coach to the starting point for your full-day guided hike. Set out at a moderate pace along a forest trail of centuries-old southern beech trees and podocarps, and learn about the unique flora of Mt. Aspiring National Park.

Along the way, your guide shares information about the historical significance of the Routeburn Track and how it was used by the pre-European Māori people to search for valued greenstone. Keep an eye out for some of the park’s 59 bird species, including the flightless takahe, the endangered mohua (yellowhead), and the kea—the world’s only alpine parrot.

Follow your guide across Routeburn Canyon, where you may dare to take a refreshing plunge in the river. Take periodic breaks for provided snacks and lunch, and to check out scenic spots and cascades such as Routeburn Falls.

Relax on the return drive to Queenstown and feel a sense of accomplishment after tramping through some of New Zealand’s most stunning alpine landscapes.

Great Day Out

Victoria_T, Mar 2026
Sure you could drive yourself there…. And do the walk on your own. And bring your own lunch …But going with group and guide was much more fun. The walk itself is easy. We are a group of 4 mid to late fifties friends. Not exactly in the prime of our lives - and it felt like a vigorous stroll. Aidan our guide was good for a chat - answered all our daft questions and drive us there and back in comfort. I think some of the info on here and on the direct website is a bit misleading. We were out and about from qtown for 8 hours including about 5 of walking - i dont recall the steep incline or decline mentioned in the brochure ?

INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE (but make sure you are in excellent hiking shape)!!

Angela_R, Dec 2025
This hike is absolutely remarkable! Pictures and words can't capture the natural beauty of the trail and waterfalls, which don't disappoint from start to finish. Our guide, Lucas, was informative, fun, and energetic. Even when a giant tree fell from high winds, blocking the road, he got us help and -- with good humor -- got us all home safely. Thank you, Lucas! Also -- as the description tells you, DON'T do this hike unless you are in excellent hiking condition. It is strenuous in spots (especially the last hour assent to the final waterfall), and we even had to take off our boots and wade through moving water in one place (again, Lucas was a great guide and helped us across). So, if you are hesitant, trust your instincts and do an easier hike. All in all, I give it a 10 out of 10. It will be the highlight of my time in Queenstown -- made all the better being able to do it with my bestie from LA!

Great Guided Hike!

Angelo was an amazing guide! He taught us so much about the different plants and birds in the area. The track itself was great, not too easy and not too difficult, but really great views.

Fiona rocks!

Our guide Paul did a great job of organizing our full day hike. He picked us on-time from our hotel, along the way we learned more about the area and the different hikes. We were very glad we did the small group option as it felt more personalized to our interests - also super glad we did the FULL day hike. It gives you time to get truly up the mountain and see far more of the Routeburn track. Its not a hard trek, but bring poles if you have them. Lunch, snacks and waters were provided. There is one very cool spot to get into the water, bring a swimsuit or at least a small towel if you want to get your feet wet. About 75 is in the shade, so it made for a nice trek during an oddly hot day.
