At the New Zealand Conservation Show, held two or three times daily (depending on the season) in an outdoor area enclosed in netting, birds such as the kakariki (a type of parakeet) and the kereru (a New Zealand pigeon) can fly free. You can also get an up-close look at birds of prey, and learn about pateke (a type of duck), buff weka (a flightless bird), and Antipodes Island parakeets.
Head to the Tuatara Encounter, where you’ll come in contact with a prehistoric lizard that is sometimes referred to as a living dinosaur.
Step into specially designed nocturnal enclosures for optimal viewing of kiwis, New Zealand’s national bird. Witness kiwi feedings and learn about the flightless birds’ underground burrows where they prefer to sleep during daylight hours.
Take a forest walk past trout-filled streams and hear about the park’s conservation efforts, which include the rehabilitation of injured wildlife and the breeding of kiwis for release in the wild.

We were delighted to see so many birds and reptiles. And the highlight is the kiwis. You cannot take personal
photos but we did ask via their page to send some and they did!
A few things I was concerned about was that the Kārearea was in a small area and these birds fly high and long distances. Maybe it’s injured , I don’t know. Be interesting to know.
The preschool next door is so loud, so don’t expect a peaceful Stroll! I felt for the birds too!
In saying this, I think the group are doing a great job.

Kiwis are amazing creatures and boy do they move fast. A chance to see them in their natural habitat was a privilege and a pleasure.
But don’t miss the talk on conservation as you get to come close to some of New Zealand’s other amazing creatures.

This was a great little park where we got to see the endangered kiwi. It was fun to learn about them as well as quite a few other birds and reptiles. The park is hidden and can be accessed on the way to the Skyline gondolas. Easy walking distance from town center. We thought it was worth the time.
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Kia Ora Bruce,

No photos or Videos of Kiwi! The area is nice and you can see native birds close, but not too much. Just strolling around are short ways.

Well organized, informative experience in a lovely setting. One of the few places to actually see a kiwi. The guide was awesome! The conservation show is so interesting with a presentation of the history of wildlife in NZ. Several birds and mammals shown. Great for all ages.

We’re so pleased you enjoyed the natural landscape of Kiwi Park! Thank you for the lovely feedback about the Conservation Show and highlighting the educational value of the experience. We hope to welcome you back again soon!

When I came to visit NZ, I wanted to see a kiwi! This park delivered. It had many other birds and wildlife. The Tuatara was my second favorite. I was disappointed I couldn’t get a photo but understandable.

An oasis in the centre of Queenstown, this park will surprise you. After the tunnel entry at the base of the gondola the Kiwi Park opens out into 5 acres of beautiful native bush land. The Kiwi experience was magical and we loved watching the busy little kiwis bustle around. The up close viewing of native birdlife, the conservation show, and meeting some of the other local fauna was really enjoyable. Not cheap, but we saved $ using the Viator app. The entry fees go toward the upkeep of the park and its excellent breeding program. Really relaxing and educational at the same time. Would recommend!
Response from Host, Jun 2026
Kia Ora Jen,

Although many people said this is a small park, I’d say don’t miss it. This is the first place I saw kiwi in dark room which is really a nice adventure. I went alone and felt so enjoyed.
Shona_C, Oct 2025
Was hard to see the kiwis more animals to see would be great for entry price . Facilities were clean and staff friendly
Deborah_A, Jul 2025
We had never seen a Kiwi up close before, so this was a first. Lovely well maintained park to wander around. Informative shows. Great location near the Gondola. Absolutely worth a visit.
John_D, Jun 2025
We started with the Conservation show which was very educational and also funny! We saw a Tuatara up close. Next we went to the Kiwi Encounters to see the Kiwis in the nocturnal house. The staff was so great with sharing information and answering our wildlife questions. Afterwards, we visited all the bird exhibits. We especially enjoyed the Kea exhibit.
Don_Y, Apr 2025
The kiwi park was informational and well kept. My family loved seeing the kiwis and hearing about the conservation efforts.
Monika_B, Mar 2025
Enough time given to see the kiwis, great experience. Also loved all animals, especially that we could get close to a kea! :D Great presentation about the kiwis and wildlife.
Jeffery_B, Dec 2024
Cute Kiwis - but the tour itself was a bit under-whelming, not much there other than the stars of the show.
