My wife and I rode the two-day Shimanami-Kaido bike tour with our guide Rai. Rai was excellent! He set a comfortable pace for the 50-mile ride, paid close attention to safety, planned out a variety of interesting stops for views, snacks, and lunch, and was quite knowledgeable about the places we rode through. He also has a great eye for photography and took many wonderful pictures of us with the scenery.
As for the tour itself, the scenery was amazing and the ride was not at all strenuous except for the inclines leading up to each of the seven bridges. However, the low gears on the comfortable manual bicycles allowed for easy riding up the inclines. My wife and I prefer active vacations so had no problem using manual bikes and we think anyone reasonably fit would not need to use an e-bike if you are looking for some good exercise in addition to wonderful site-seeing, though Rai did mention that most of his clients use e-bikes.
We highly recommend Shimanami-Kaido and highly recommend Rai as a guide.
