Overview
Do as the tourists of bygone years did, and explore Killarney by horse and carriage. The equivalent to a modern taxi, the jaunting car was popular in Ireland through the 19th and early 20th centuries. On this tour, you’ll learn about the area’s history, hearing tales of the Gaelic chieftains as you ride around Killarney National Park. Ross Castle, St. Mary's Cathedral, and Killarney House Gadens are a few of the landmarks on the route.
- Enjoy transport by old-fashioned horse and carriage
- Watch out for Ireland’s last native herd of red deer

Head to the Malton Hotel in Killarney for your horse-drawn jaunting car tour. Several departure times run through the day, so just turn up at a time that suits your schedule.
Once on board, you’ll travel past St. Mary’s Cathedral, a delightful thatched cottage, and Killarney House and Gardens. Head into Killarney National Park, and travel at a relaxed pace through countryside where the modern-day traffic can’t reach.
As you go, keep an eye out for red deer; the deer park is home to the country’s last native herd. Gaze out at the lake against a backdrop of distant mountains, and see if you can make out Carrauntoohil, one of Ireland's tallest peaks.
Hear tales from your carriage driver as you pass Ross Castle, a 15th-century tower house. Owned by O’Donoghue Mor, the castle was the last to be defeated by Oliver Cromwell and the English in 1652. Stop for photos, then return to the start point in Killarney.

Dan and Pearl, the horse, did a great job sharing with us the history and the beauty of Killarney National Park. Great way to see the park and Ross Castle!

We had a great time on our jaunting car tour. Definitely give this a try if you are traveling with young kids. We covered a lot of ground that we could not have done on foot (or by bike). This was a lovely way to start our morning in Killarney before we started out by car for the coast.
Our driver was on time, kind, and friendly.
Our daughter loved the experience, and the 10-15 minute stop at Ross Castle was plenty. (Because there are A LOT of castles in Ireland.)

The driver’s (unfortunately I didn’t get his name) was very informative about everywhere we passed. He had a couple of cods* in his bag** as well, which my children enjoyed.
For American or other non-Irish readers.
*lies which are also jokes.
** Metaphorical rather than literal.

Had a fantastic time with Calvin and Maggie. Calvin was a 6th generation driver and Maggie was a spirited beauty who was the brains of the operation. I recommend taking this ride as it was full of great history and great way to see the park. A++++
