This was the best tour we’ve ever had the chance of taking! Our guide Alison was so personable and kind, and everything was at a pace that let us absorb the history and beauty of the land around us. We learned so much about where chocolate comes from, the cacao plants, the history of the industry, and the process of turning the cacao into chocolate. Allison was very knowledgeable and did a great job of including us in every part of the chocolate making process, which was a great hands- on experience for us. We didn’t know there were so many products and delicious things that come from cacao. Her expertise and friendly demeanor made this an overall amazing full day experience. We topped off our afternoon with a delicious home cooked 3-course meal on the premises among the breeze and the flowering trees. The food was delicious! Everyone on the farm was helpful, patient, knowledgeable, and happy to showcase their little piece of paradise. It was refreshing to experience such a welcoming and hospitable group of people working the chocolate making and also dining part of the tour. My son and I were the only two people on the tour this day, so Allison and her husband gave us a personalized educational day that could not be beat. We highly recommend this tour- and Allison as your guide.

Mario is a wonderful tour guide - so passionate about his profession and very proud of his country and heritage. He provided in depth information about Ecuador and Guayaquil - history, economy, agriculture, cocoa production, etc. He has a great personality and an eagerness to please his guests. Additionally, people at the cocoa farm (family-owned) are extremely friendly.

What an incredible day, from pickup to return! This excursion combines learning about cacao and the culture around it, from walking through the grove of cacao plants, to turning it into paste, to eating different treats and dishes made with cacao. And finished with a home cooked meal. Extraordinary hospitality. Great value! Every person we interacted with was so passionate to share about their country, culture and special crop. We feel like we now have Ecuadorian friends! Great value. We can't recommend this experience highly enough!

This was an immersive experience for our small group, where we walked through the grove of cacao trees, gaining an understanding of different species, as well as how adjacent plants and pollination can change the flavor each tree produces. Following that, we participated in each step of taking the pod all the way to chocolate bar for each of us. I now understand just how much effort and expertise it takes to create perfect chocolate. Ecuador has a rich history of growing excellent cacao, and is now positioning itself as a major player in chocolate making. The tour was followed by a delicious lunch prepared in the kitchen and under a shelter beside the cacao trees snd small river. Allison was our guide and she was wonderful throughout, also explaining what we were seeing on the drive to and from the plantation. She shared stories about her family and how Ecuadorians live and their culture. Darwin was our drive and he was fabulous, too.

Unexpectedly amazing! We had Tony/Antonio as our guide and he was absolutely great. This is a comfortable private tour visiting a family farm. It’s not just cocoa, there are many interesting plants and fruits to try. We chopped off cocoa pods, knocked guava from the tree and plucked citrus fruits. Very hands on. We were guided by the son of the owner of the farm Rody, who lives there. After going through the entire process from tree to chocolate bar, we had a delicious lunch at Rody’s house. If you are looking for a hands on, personal experience this tour is for you. I don’t know how you can visit this city and not do this tour.
Response from Host, Aug 2024
Dear Matthew,
Thank you for taking the time in writing this review. We are so happy you had a great time in the tour and Tony is indeed an amazing guide, so is Rody showing his farm.
Let us know if you are ever again in Guayaquil,
Cheers,

We had just had a week in the Galápagos Islands and had a free day before we returned to the USA. We looked at the reviews and found a tour of a cocoa farm where they take you through all the steps involved to make a chocolate bar from the picking of the bean to making the bar. What a treat. It gave us more appreciation of how much work and care it takes to produce even one bar of chocolate. This was a family owned farm where all employees are family. We had lunch that was excellent and prepared by one of the family members. We were accompanied by Allison who was a true professional. She gave us great information and helped describe the activities at the farm along with Jamil the family member that helped us along the way to make hot chocolate out of the beans we helped pick.
It was a sweet ending to our vacation
Response from Host, Jun 2024
Dear Frederick,
Thank you so much for your review. The cocoa farm is such a great place to visit and as you say, you do appreciate chocolate more after the tour.
Allyson is awesome! I am glad you enjoyed your time with her.
Hope to offer more tours in the future if you are every back in Ecuador.

This was a great trip. Tony our guide was very knowledgeable about the cacao as well as providing interesting information on the way. Rody, the chocolate entrepreneur, was passionate about the farm, the cacao fruit and the chocolate making process. We were encouraged to participate in every aspect and enjoyed a very tasty lunch at the end, prepared by Rody’s wife.
Response from Host, Jun 2023
Dear Judith,

A great personal tour. Jamil walked us through the cocoa groves and gave us a hands on education of the chocolate-making process. Interesting and fun, with a beautiful and delicious lunch. Highly recommend!

An absolutely amazing experience! Mario was knowledgeable, charming and went out of his way when we asked to do some shopping on the way back! The farm was so interesting and diverse. Niffa was love,y; her demonstration of the chocolate making process was fascinating and she is so, so friendly. I can recommend this experience, in fact I would go so far as saying it is a must-do! Thank you Mario and Niffa

This was the most remarkable and memorable day of our trip to Ecuador. Our guide, Mario, was extremely knowledgeable about the history of cacao in Ecuador as he comes from a distinguished cacao-farming family. He was able to gives us all kinds of insights into the country and its people as well. We were not rushed through any part of the tour and had all our questions answered thoughtfully no matter the topic.
The farm and its natural setting are idyllic, set on the bend of a jungle river. We saw charcoal being made by the farm owner who is a charming person along with his entire family (a family-run operation). We made our own chocolate “from scratch” and ate the result with sweet bananas which was absolutely delicious. Then we had a delicious lunch served outdoors by the family.
This day was off the charts in terms of being interesting and in terms of rural charm and beauty. We were also given (as an option, which we gladly accepted) a tour of Guayaquil’s most famous old cemetery when we got back to town. Very cool.
Highly recommended. Don’t think twice, just book it.
Response from Host, Dec 2021
Dear Allan,
Thank you for writing this wonderful review. I really enjoyed our time together and it makes me happy to know that you did too. I love to show the cemetery since it makes me so proud.
I hope I can make it to BC so we can meet again and share more stories.
Warmly,
Mario

We had an excellent guide that provided great information about Ecuador. The farm was extremely interesting and it was great fun to make our own chocolate. All topped off with an excellent lunch!

Such a wonderful tour! We not only learned about the chocolate making process, we actually made it ourselves. What fun! We especially enjoyed spending time with Mario, our tour guide. He was very informative and made the tour feel very personalized. We highly recommend this trip and Mario!!!
Gino_G, Oct 2019
Mario was a great guide who really cares about his work and is passionate about it. From the timing to the engagement, it was 100% about his clients. We talked the whole way about the farm to learn about Ecuador and from there you really could feel immersed in the farming and Cocoa culture. Great relationship with the farm family and history of the crop. Highly recommend!

Niffa the owner of the cocoa farm along with Mario are very knowledgeable and it shows they love what they do. They went over and above our expectations for this tour. The lunch was delicious and we enjoyed every minute. We wish them continued success. We enjoyed meeting the family who helped make this more enjoyable too.

This was a great experience. We were picked up at our hotel and greeted by Mario. He is a very ambitious person and eager to please. His knowledge of the area, farm tour and chocolate making made for a great family trip. It was a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy city and see the countryside. Went with my parents and children, great for all ages.

We truly enjoyed the trip to the Cacao Plantation and would recommend it to anyone! The visit was to the plantation of local cacao farmers and was very authentic. Our guide and the family were extremely kind and treated us to the same meal that they shared. Having heard that we'd already taken a city tour, the guide showed us a local fruit market and other city sites after the tour based on our interests. I hope to return to take other family members on this tour--I enjoyed it that much!
