This tour was interesting to say the least! We started off by trying raw horse meat. I personally was not a fan of the taste but the experience was worth it! Then we went to another restaurant and tried the blowfish. Again, I didn't love the taste of the blowfish but it was a lot of fun trying it and learning about the fish from our tour guide. Our guide was great and had so much knowledge about fish. He was a pleasure to talk with and made it a highly memorable experience! If you're in the area then I highly recommend taking this tour! It makes for a highly memorable experience and is super fun!

An excellent way to sample unique cuisine!

Nicholas_M, Apr 2025
For the adventurous eaters out there, this tour is well worth the booking! We started off with several servings of fugu (sashimi, fried, and with the tail in a cup of sake) in a local bar that no tourist would normally find. From there, we then visited another local restaurant featuring cuisines from the Kyushu region. Here, we sampled different cuts of horse meat and a few other dishes. Our tour guide provided good local knowledge of the area and advised us on how to sample all of the food. We were given plenty of food, ordered our own drinks, and enjoyed the company of our local guide. Highly recommended!

Cows, Horse and Fish!

Shun-san was incredible! We got to eat horse sashimi, beef organs/intestines, fugu blow fish, and deep fried angler fish! Def a must try if you want to try and bunch of new things!

Kitamura-san was a great tour guide! The pufferfish and horse meat were fantastic. She was very nice and guided us through the menu and was able to help us answer our questions. She also guided us a little bit around the Ginza district and showed the best spots to eat and shop. Thank you!

Fun experience that felt somewhat rushed

We met Izumi in a very crowded and bustling area of Ginza. Although I was fine meeting him in a safe area, I would suggest meeting in a more specific location that you could find on a gps. For first time visitors to Japan, it’s very perplexing to navigate a new city with a unique address system different from their own. As for the experience, it was goo Ld. I expected at least three different locations on this tour. We only went to two. I enjoy a variety of different foods and I think if other specific food items were planned beforehand, the tour would’ve had a better structure to it. Open some additional suggestions for travelers while including the horse meat (which was very good, by the way) along with the blowfish. We were fascinated with the many food stalls! The only thing I’d suggest is for the guide to slow down a little bit to allow his group to follow. We are new to the city and are bombarded with new sights and sounds, so rushing us through a crowded street induces anxiety because we do not want to get lost. That said, the food and company was very pleasant and we enjoyed every minute. Thank you, Izumi!

Wonderful food tour for the adventurous!

I was meant to enjoy this experience with two friends of mine, who were unfortunately detained in another part of Tokyo and ended up unable to join. However, I will say I had a fantastic time with the host regardless! She set up a very nice selection of tastings (of whale, fugu, and horse sashimi) for me, made great drink suggestions, and conversation flowed well. She made me feel comfortable and welcome even as a surprise-solo attendee. For anyone wishing to explore a variety of 'adventurous' foods without dedicating specific meals to each, I highly recommend this tour!

Our host Izumi-san was lovely, knowledgeable and patient to our terrible Japanese language skills. He told us lots about Tokyo and the food tour was amazing. Horse sashimi is the best.

Overall,I recommend

Izumi, the tour guide was great. He spoke English well enough and was informative on the dishes, local areas, and Japanese culture. The food was so-so, but that doesn't bother me as trying new food as a foreigner, new food is always hit or miss. I do think the tour may have been overpriced, but also hard to know ,as we didn't do any ordering. Overall, I recommend if you are open trying new foods.

Great tour!! We were able to try fugu and horse sashimi. There was no way we would have found that on our own. Grateful to our guide for introducing it to us!!

Fun experience

We enjoyed this experience. The food was interesting. It was a small group. The host and guide is knowledgeable. We had a good time and it is always nice to have good conversation with other travelers and with locals in this case with the host. Great experience overall.

Great experience

We had a wonderful time. Our guide Izumi was a great host and taught us a lot about Japanese food and culture.

Informative and delicious tour with a pro

Nicole_G, Oct 2023
From learning about where horses are traditionally bred as food (while eating delicious horse sashimi) to finding out about the variations in toxicity of pufferfish by season and by species, this tour was incredible! Our guide, a fish biologist, had charts to show us - as scientists ourselves, we loved all the data. And the food was delicious! Was hesitant to try horse (and the poisonous fugu), but both were delicious (and harmless). Try these foods with Shoji and weird out your friends back home!

Atypical dining experience for Foodies

Christopher_H, Oct 2022
Our tour guide was personable and engaging for what turned out to be a private dinner outing for just my wife and I. The Viator description was a little misleading in that it wasn’t much of a tour - only 2 restaurants and 2 adventurous foods (horsemeat and blowfish) - but in hindsight it made sense and the guide Shoji did a nice job making it worthwhile.

ADRIAN F, Oct 2018
The tour was very intersting, went to three different places. First was a restaurant where food was mostly fish and sea food, second was a place of fugu blowfish, and the third was mainly horse. All the three places were really japanese filled with japanese people, not tourists. Food was very good and exotic as promised, and our guide Mack was very kind.

Excellent Food Tour

Andrew_Q, Oct 2018
Our guide, Asami, was wonderful. She showed us a bunch of foods we would have never tried on our own, and they were all delicious. When the fugu restaurant was full, she went the extra mile and took us to a different restaurant not on the schedule and also another fugu restaurant a little further away to make sure we had the opportunity to taste that type of food.

Gary is an tour guide and the tour was a definite highlight of our trip to Japan. Looking forward to meeting up with him again as he is the true genuine foodie expert!
