Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see any whales. Apparently, this has been a particularly poor whale season, with many of them staying further south. Our guide even mentioned that this could potentially become more common in the future.
What disappointed us most was that we weren’t informed about this beforehand. Had we known that whale sightings were much less likely than usual, we would have gone into the tour with different expectations.
We did, however, see a group of dolphins, which was a nice experience. We were also already back in the village around 1:00 PM, which felt quite early, and it wasn’t really clear to us why the trip ended so soon.
Despite these points, we still enjoyed the boat trip itself, and the staff were friendly throughout. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, but better communication beforehand about the unusually low chances of seeing whales would have made a big difference.
Response from Host, Aug 2026
Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed your time with the dolphins and found our team friendly, although of course we understand the disappointment of not seeing whales that day.
There have been fewer humpback whales in our area this season than in some previous years, which we believe is related to unusually warm ocean conditions associated with El Niño. However, this does not mean that the chances of seeing whales are unusually low on any particular tour. We are still encountering humpback whales on most of our tours, and as you can see from the experiences shared by other guests this season, we have had many extraordinary whale encounters, including mothers with newborn calves, breaching whales, and whales spending extended periods near our boat.
For that reason, we did not feel it would be accurate to “warn” guests that they were unlikely to see whales. Some days we find several whales and have incredible encounters; occasionally, as happened on your tour, we do not find any at all. That is the reality of observing completely wild animals in the open ocean, and we are always very clear that sightings of any particular species can never be guaranteed.
Regarding the return time, our website and tour information state that the tour returns between approximately 1:00 and 1:30 PM. Returning around 1:00 PM was therefore within the normal scheduled duration of the tour and was not an early termination because whales had not been found. We always use the time available to search for as much marine life as possible.
We’re very glad the dolphins gave you a beautiful wildlife experience and that you enjoyed being out on the ocean with us. We certainly wish the whales had chosen to make an appearance for you as well, but ultimately nature decides what each day will bring.
Thank you for joining us and for sharing your experience.

If I could give this tour 10 stars, I would. Granted, we were very lucky and saw tons of whales, including a baby and her mama, the whole experience was just great. Sierra and here team were lovely and so informative. My favorite part was listening to the whales on the hydrophone, and we were even allowed to get into the water and swim and we could hear the whales singing under water. Truly bucket list experience. I went by myself and met lovely people on the tour and the crew was just so nice. They provided water and snacks and lunch which were very yummy. 10/10 recommend!
Response from Host, Aug 2026
Shayna, thank you so much for this incredible review! Reading your words brought a huge smile to my face.
That really was one of those magical days on the ocean that we'll all remember. Spending so much time with a mama humpback and her baby is always a gift, but being able to listen to the whales through the hydrophone—and then hear them singing while floating in the water—is an experience very few people ever have. It's one of my favorite moments to share with our guests.
I'm also so happy you enjoyed getting to know the other guests. One of the wonderful things about these tours is that strangers often leave as friends, connected by an unforgettable experience in nature.
Thank you for your kind words about our team, and I'm delighted you enjoyed the snacks and lunch as well. We truly love what we do, and it means the world to know that came through.
Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us and for your enthusiastic recommendation. We hope the songs of those whales stay with you for a lifetime, and we'd love to welcome you back to Drake Bay for another unforgettable adventure.
With gratitude,
Sierra 🌊🐋🐬✨

A great experience. I have been before with Divine Dolphin and it always delivers. We got to see plenty of dolphins and even some Bryde whales. There’s even an opportunity to take a dip during a break. Highly recommended.
Response from Host, Jul 2026
Thank you so much for your wonderful review!
It means so much that you chose to join us again. There’s no greater compliment than having returning guests, and I’m so happy this trip was another memorable one.
Seeing plenty of dolphins is always a joy, and spotting Bryde’s whales made the day even more special. They’re such beautiful, elusive animals, so every encounter with them is a real treat.
I’m also glad you enjoyed the opportunity to take a refreshing dip during our break. It’s always nice to cool off and enjoy the beautiful waters of Drake Bay when the conditions allow.
Thank you for your continued support and your recommendation. We look forward to welcoming you back for another ocean adventure—because no two days on the water are ever the same!
Warmly,
Sierra 🌊🐬🐋✨

This was by far the best experience of my trip. Seeing a momma and baby whale up close and watching the baby play was a one in a lifetime experience. They picked me up in Drake Bay and we headed out. We found the whales quickly and our guide was very informative. Then we went in search of dolphins. They'd just had a big feed and were resting. Not as playful as they could've been, but still fun to watch. We had lunch by a waterfall and then returned to the whales. By now the baby was restless and playful. She put on a good show of rolling onto her back, slapping her dorsal fin and tail.

Royale, thank you so much for sharing this beautiful reflection of your day with us.
There is truly nothing like witnessing a mother humpback and her baby together in the wild. Watching a calf roll, fin slap, and explore the world beside her mother is one of those rare, heart-expanding moments that stays with you forever. We feel honored every time we get to share that with our guests.
I love that you noticed the rhythm of the day — from finding the whales quickly, to observing the dolphins resting after a big feed (which is such natural behavior), to enjoying lunch by the waterfall before returning to the whales for that playful finale. Nature always unfolds in her own timing, and on this day she clearly had something special in store for you.
Thank you for your kind words about our team and the experience. Knowing this was the highlight of your trip means more than you know.
We hope the memory of that playful baby whale stays with you for a lifetime — and perhaps brings you back to Drake Bay someday. 🌊✨
With gratitude,
Sierra

the guides are very knowledgeable and will make sure that the animals won't be disturbed, which is great.
make sure to bring sunscreen, because the sun out there is brutal
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Thank you so much for joining us and for your kind words! We’re very happy to hear that you appreciated our knowledge and our strong commitment to respecting the animals and their natural behaviors — that’s at the heart of everything we do.
And yes — the Costa Rican sun can definitely be intense out on the water! ☀️ Sunscreen, a hat, and good sun protection make the experience much more comfortable.
Thank you again for coming out with us, and we hope to welcome you back to Drake Bay someday! 🌊🐬🐋

Fantastic experience! We saw 7 Humpback Whales and a pod of dolphins. Sierra and the boat crew were excellent and provided a ton of interesting information about the whales and their behavior. Lunch was great too! A must-do if you’re in the area!

Wow, thank you so much for your wonderful review! 🐋🐬
We’re so happy you got to experience both the majestic humpback whales and a playful pod of dolphins—what an incredible day! It was our pleasure to share our passion and knowledge with you, and we're thrilled you enjoyed the lunch too.
Your kind words mean the world to us. Thank you for joining us and for recommending the tour—hope to see you again one day in magical Drake Bay! 💙

It was ok if you want to see dolphins but I felt that the description about this tour is very misleading. First of all it says that they have a hydrophone so you can hear the sounds. We had no such thing on our boat. We did hear a lot of music from the captains speakerboxes though.
Secondly there should be an expert telling us about the whales and dolphins with 25 years of experience.
Most of the time no one said anything and they didn’t seem to have a clue where to find the animals.
Most of the time we were aimlessly going rounds with the boat to see if we maybe would run into dolphins. And we did. Great, but I didn’t pay this amount to only go rounds with a boat to see dolphins.
The more accurate description would be dolphin tour with a speed boat.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
Wow, I am really trying to understand your perspective about our tour since we got a totally raving review from another person who was on the same boat that day.
You say it is okay if you want to see dolphins. Well, yes, this is a dolphin tour. That is what people come for and according to you, you saw them. Not only did you have an expert with 30 years of experience on the boat, you also had our wonderful and very professional guide, Katie, who indeed explains everything that is going on including species, behaviors and other facts about what we are seeing. People have been raving about her if you read all the other reviews.
No, we do not have dolphins satellite tagged to find them and they move around a lot because they need to eat, so we don't always know just where they are, but we have a very good general idea and years of experience knowing their hangouts. On your day, 28 December, we were having to navigate to avoid several storms. We definitely do not roam aimlessly and are also in touch with other boats in the area. Were you expecting to pull up to the dolphin coral where they are kept for tourists to look at?
We did find a massive ball of discarded rope which had collected thousands of fish of many species which was amazing. We also had several dolphins leaping right next to the boat, I have the video to prove it. We had a lovely lunch at the waterfall at the island and more dolphins after lunch.
We have our hydrophone on every single tour and sometimes we use it and other times we don't depending on the behaviors of the dolphins and other factors. The dolphins were moving pretty quickly on this day and also because of the rougher seas, we try not to stop for long periods so that people don't get sick, so using the hydrophone was not practical on this day. Our captain does not have speakerboxes by the way.
We also went out of our way to please you by taking you up the river a bit on the way back where you were able to see spider monkeys, toucans, macaws and more as an added bonus.
I am not sure what you were expecting but according to you, it is a good tour if you want to see dolphins, so I will let that comment, and all our other fantastic reviews, including one from your same day, speak for themselves.
I hope the rest of your time in Costa Rica was everything you were expecting.

Had a chance to see two different pods of spotted dolphins. Beautiful
Trip is described very well and the Katie and Serena (?) were incredibly sweet and showed an amazing passion for the animals.

Would not recommend. Advertising was not accurate at all. We only got to swim for about 5 minutes and did not see much.
Response from Host, Dec 2024
We are sorry you did not enjoy all the whales, including moms and babies, and dolphins that we saw on your tour. Swimming depends on many factors and where we end up going. This is a dolphin and whale tour and swimming and snorkeling is dependent on the state of the ocean (it was very rough on your day).
We did see several whales and some dolphins too and the other people on your tour were very excited and happy. We are very sorry that you were disappointed. It is always our goal to have happy customers, but some people are extremely hard to please when their expectations don't match what the tour actually is and is advertised as.

Christina_N, Dec 2023
I got to see some dolphins which was amazing. The weather became bad and the water was rough. I understand you can’t help that but then we had a boat full of children and a restless family who didn’t follow instructions so they turned the boat in early without consulting everyone else on the boat. They didn’t give us the option to snorkel closer to Cano island with bad weather out in the sea. There was no snorkeling due to bad weather or actual bathroom stops. All the hours are spent on the boat. And to use the bathroom you have to jump in the ocean which at the time was a little turbulent. Overall, the staff was nice but they don’t actually have a way to track the animals. They just have a few areas where they know the animals frequent.
Response from Host, Jan 2024
I am glad you enjoyed the dolphins that we saw. We cannot snorkel at Caño Island because it is a National Park and the tickets must be purchased in advance. We do offer a combo tour if our guests book it ahead of time. Otherwise, it is a separate tour. Bathroom stops are whenever people request them and I always make that clear at the beginning of the tour. If you need to go, just speak up! ;)
No, we do not have any satellite tags on the animals, that is extremely intrusive for them and we would never do that. And because of our 26 years out on these waters, yes, we do know areas they frequent which is why we found them for you!
We always do our best with the weather and circumstances given to us. Pura Vida.

No Toilette on board and no rain protection.
First the good: The staff was friendly and full of information about Dolphins. The Captain was great in manoeuvring through the light waves and found the Dolphins. Hence 2 Stars.
Negative:
First, no Toilette on board and we were supposed to be 6 hours on it... kinda rough but the small boat doesn't have space for one so... as the team said: "The ocean is our Toilette."
Then we were unlucky with the weather and when the rain came pouring down, there was absolutely no protection as there was only a small roof but nothing to protect us from the side. The guests were completely soaked quickly and as we thought snorkeling is an option and not a must do, we didn't wear swimming clothes but normal clothes. The Team kept following the Dolphins and even turned the boat in a circular drive so we got the rain from all sides. It was extremely uncomfortable and the cold wind didn't help either. After a while the Lady Boss asked if we want to continue staying with the Dolphins or go back to Drakes Bay. We all agreed that we want to go back. After a while we made it through the rain into sunnier territory and then they suddenly stopped in some bay nearby to give us to eat the lunch they prepared. Unfortunately though, the rain caught up on us and the wind as well. As we were completely soaked, it was really not enjoyable at all. When we arrived back, everyone just jumped off the boat and searched for shelter to change into dryer clothes. Unfortunately we didn't have any. So we had to drive 1,5 hours back to our hotel completely wet.
I know this was kinda bad luck. So I want to end with some suggestions.
For the Crew:
I would suggest to upgrade the boat with foldable side windows, which you can roll up and fixate on the roof when you don't need them but quickly can get down to protect the passengers. Then you can sit the rain out, roll them back up and continue the excursion dry and happy.
For Customers:
Wear swimming clothes even if you don't want to snorkel and bring a waterproof backpack with dry clothes and a rain jacket!!!!
Response from Host, Jul 2023
I am very sorry that you did not bother to read the very extensive information and instructions I send before the tour specifically this part:
"Please wear your bathing suits so that you can easily get into the water. Also bring a rain poncho or jacket in case of rain and a towel if you think you'll want one after getting out of the water. On sunny days, it is warm, but if it is cloudy or rainy, you might want to dry off."
You are here in the rainy season and you wore just a tank tee top! No boats in the area have a restroom, these are not cruise ships, they are smaller tour boats and most people who come during the rainy season are prepared for both rain and for getting in the water, especially when they have kids. It is almost as if you want to blame us for the rain and for you not being prepared, not even bringing a change of clothes when you know you are going out on the ocean, rain or not.
We were with a large pod of dolphins who were very friendly with us but I saw your very unhappy face and that is why I asked if you wanted to go back.
Plastic windows do not even make sense on this kind of boat, but bringing rain gear during the rainy season does.
I am very sorry you did not enjoy the dolphins who were swimming all around the boat trying to connect with you. We are in the business of making people happy and we realize that sometimes that is impossible no matter how hard we try.
Maria_E, Feb 2023
We were very lucky to see some false killer whales, spotted dolphins and a turtle. Stopping for lunch in a picturesque place was really nice. However, I was surprised by the lack of enthusiasm on behalf of our guide who hardly shared any information about the wildlife we came across. I appreciate that my opinion is based on comparisons with similar experiences in the past. I still enjoyed the day.
Response from Host, Feb 2023
Thank you for your review, Maria. I guess my jumping up and down and clapping when we saw the Pseudo Orcas was not enthusiastic enough! lol It is interesting that someone on the same tour shared this on Instagram:
"isi_on_tour_24
Amazing tour with an amazing crew! Thank you so much for the great day in and on the water! The scenic lunch spot was an additional lovely surprise 🙂"
I really try to balance giving information and allowing people to enjoy the ocean without constant chatter. For some people, I talk too much. I can't please everyone, but I do try. I always answer all questions to the best of my ability.
Thanks for coming along and I am glad you were able to experience the Pseudo Orcas... twice in the same day!

I think I am not gonna lie if I say that this was the tour of our lives. If you can only attend one program in this area it must be this tour. Believe me, you are not gonna regret it. We saw hundreds of dolphins within a few hours in their natural habitat. Sierra is very knowledgable, helpful and she knows where to find dolphins. Thank you for this amazing experience, I hope we can attend this tour in the future again!

We have only been able to spot whales although there must have been dolphins in the area. It was also abruptly cut short: after 5am we were back on the beach.

Hallo!
We waren rond 13.00 uur terug, precies zoals vermeld in onze informatie.

Response from Host, Aug 2022
