For the trek to the river you must be fit and adventurous - not for the faint hearted!

We were met by Kenneth - a lovely guy and trekked quite a distance uphill. We went down a steep path and then had to take shoes off and wade across the river - shallow when we went. We had wetsuit shoes with us ESSENTIAL for this trip. We then had another steep path to a hostel that he and friends had set up in the area. We were offered breakfast - the food was superb and the coffee amazing. The guy said he has done some training as a chef. The hostel was quite and experience and we really enjoyed seeing what they had created. When the river rises they get completely cut off there! There is no vehicle access directly to the camp. Like Robison Crusoe had been on an Island for some time and made the best of the area. They did have some electrical appliances which they had carried there! The toilet facilities were clean. We changed at the hostel and then had a very steep treck through the jungle - no paths! The guide went a way ahead of us and there was no assistance when the terrain was tough. We were in swim wear and had wetsuit shoes on - not really safe for jungle trekking! We were pretty tired on getting to the river and then the guide spent ages pumping up old car inner tubes. These were necessary as if you grounded in the river, normal rings would have punctured. The river was really too low for tubing and we had to get out several times and walk a little. Kenneth took loads of photos which was great. The river was peaceful which was lovely. We then had a shorter trek back to the hostle. We picked our belongings up - no secure locker for these - all just based on trust - so dont take valuables! After a walk to the nearest road, the hostel owner's brother then picked us up and drove us to the door of our accommodation which was fab. Everyone was kind and it was great to see what they were building there. I am not sure what would have happened if there had been a drama of any sort and even more unsure what health and safety would make of the whole situation on the trek. As nothing happened and we had a reasonable level of fitness, we had a good day, but think carefully it's a different sort of tour!
