- Is it safe?
- Yes. You’ll be provided with safety instruction from our experienced guides who’ve spent hundreds of hours getting to know our resident school of sharks. Our guides will be in the water with you the entire time and will closely monitor the sharks behaviour to ensure your safety.
- What type of sharks will I see?
- There are two main species of sharks encountered, White Tip Reef Sharks and Black Tip Reef Sharks, both are common in the tropical warm waters of the South Pacific. Each species can grow to a length of just over 1.5 metres although under the water they appear 25% larger, a snorkeling face mask optical illusion. White Tips are the dominant species and are by nature an inquisitive shark not frightened to check you out. Their Black Tip relatives are by contrast timid and will shy away if they feel threatened.
- How many sharks will I see?
- Numbers vary but it is common to see up to six sharks.
- How deep is the water?
- Both Black Tip and White Tip Reef Sharks prefer shallower waters making snorkeling easy with good visibility. It’s even possible to see the sharks from our boat before entering the water. Water depth varies between 4 - 6 metres depending on the tide.
- What if I’m not a good swimmer, haven’t snorkeled before or don’t want to snorkel but my travelling companion does?
- Buoyancy aids are available for less confident swimmers and because these sharks prefer shallow waters there’s no necessity to dive under the water to secure a thrilling view. Non-snorkelers can join the day but sit out the snorkeling experience.

- As Sharks are wild animals we cannot guarantee sightings however we have a 95% +success rate of sighting sharks. In the event that you don’t see any sharks we are happy for you to return for a complimentary “Ultimate Encounter - Snorkel with Sharks” within 3 days of your original cruise.
- If poor weather and sea conditions result in the cancellation of the 'Snorkeling with Sharks experience,' a substitute snorkeling safari will be provided.
- Please bring swimsuit, towel, protective clothing from the sun including a hat and sunblock, light jacket or sweater during the cooler months, money or credit card for optional purchases, your camera and sense of fun!
- This tour/activity will have a maximum of 20 travelers

What an amazing experience. Such a beautiful place. I brought my wife and three kids. My 12 year old was afraid to get out of the boat. You could see the sharks swimming. Eventually he got into the water. After a couple of minutes he was swimming around looking at the sharks and fish. The staff were amazing. Very friendly. I highly recommend this. It’s well worth it.

Overall, it was well worth getting through the logistics, as well as a surprisingly long walk to/from meet up place to boat location (four times), to have a fantastic encounter with the sharks, beautiful reef, and a good variety of fish. More communication describing specifically how the trip was going to be organized (ie, boat loading, access to gear, etc) would have helped a lot. Still, the experience is highly recommended. If it's possible, an extra 10-15 minutes more for viewing sharks would have been great. The buffet lunch was delicious. Good variety of food and many vegetarian options. This was a really neat trip. You start by taking a ferry out to Kuata Island. From there, the reef is a short boat ride away. The reef is really amazing. We saw lots of black and white tip reef sharks (who do not care about people at all), octopus, squid, lots of fish, and beautiful pristine coral. After about an hour, they take you back to a resort on the island for lunch and to enjoy the island. Later on the ferry comes back by and picks you up. We have snorkeled lots of places, and this reef was really excellent.

This was a very cool experience snorkeling with black tip and white tip reef sharks. As soon as we got in the water there were two below us and about 8-10 more that came through later. We also saw a variety of tropical fish and coral. This was the clearest water I’ve ever snorkeled in, and we could see easily down to 30 feet deep. After snorkeling, we had a fantastic lunch at a small beach resort. After lunch, we had free time to explore the island, lounge by the pool, or snorkel along the beach front. We chose to snorkel a second time and saw more sharks and fish. There’s a lot of logistics getting to the snorkel site, but well worth it for the experience. It’s about a 1.5 hour ferry boat ride to/from the snorkel island, so sit back and enjoy a snack or a drink while you watch the many small islands go by.

Amazing snorkeling with sharks. Also a wonderful place to relax, with pools, lounge chairs, beautiful beach and a bar. Overall it was a great day.
My only criticism was the long walk along the beach of hot sand and broken coral. We needed to walk that beach 4 times when boarding boats. Our feet hurt at the end of the day. Hopefully they will provide a different path in the future.

Communication was great in the lead up to the day. Great price for a long day trip with food, transfers etc.
Only downside is the experience itself is only about 45min in the water. When compares to the whole day, it would be nice to have longer with the sharks and less island time.

Expect 2 hours each way on a ferry to the site and back. The shops at the port were closed when we left and when we returned, so no chance to shop at Port Denarau, despite being therefor an hour before leaving. A couple of the cafes were open, if you wanted breakfast. We absolutely saw sharks and they were (safely) swimming around us. It was amazing. The tour guides were great and very flexible. Our younger daughter was a little scared to get in but she was fine on the boat and eventually we were able to convince herto get in and then she had a great time. Parton her fear was that the equipment she was given disnt fit her well - the mask was way too big and her fins disnt fit either. She ended up leaving the fins on the boat and made do with a mask that was uncomfortably too big. She is a small 11 yr old. Had i known, i wouldve brought her gear from home with us. Lunch was delicious and offered a variety of foods. After lunch, we were given the option to snorkel the beach or movies some items for sale by the local women. We had more than enough time to do both - we snorkeled foran hour and saw baby sharks among the beach coral. After doing both of these things, we still had an hour at the dive center/bar. As we had kids with us and weren't drinking, it was kind of a long hour waiting for the ferry. We felt the post lunch time could have been better scheduled or organized.

The snorkeling was fantastic! We saw 5-6 sharks and numerous different types of fish. We were able to swim around the reef and check it out for 45 mins of so. The lunch was also delicious and the team were all very helpful and nice.

This was an incredible day experience. Transportation is booked in advance and is nice air condition bus transportation to the main doc and then includes a high-speed catamaran to the island, followed by snorkeling with sharks for a couple of hours. Only one snorkeling stop and if I did it again, I would probably do a dive, but having said it, it was an incredible experience

Do not book! Save yourself!! The day took nearly 10 hours and we did a total of 30 mins of snorkeling. It was crazy. They seemed more interested in trying to sell you drinks at the crap resort it leaves from. The least amount of time you’ll spend on the trip is actually snorkelling.

The product description and all inclusions—including scheduled vessel departure times and travelling durations—are clearly advertised online so that guests can plan accordingly, especially those travelling from further away.
The snorkelling session with reef sharks is designed to be approximately 30–40 minutes in the water. This is a carefully considered balance to ensure guest safety, respect for the marine environment, and the opportunity to enjoy a truly unforgettable encounter with these incredible animals.
In addition to the shark snorkel, the experience includes:

Save your money. We saw no sharks snorkeling. There was no guide or apology for not seeing the sharks. No one cared. The whole tour was very disorganized. We never knew what was going on. Had to consistently ask for help and what is next. Only good part was the food. We went to the beach and got to see a baby shark on our own.

Please allow us to clarify that all guests are provided with a full briefing upon arrival to Kuata Island. This includes completing a registration form, where guests are asked to note any important information such as dietary requirements or next destination. During this time, guests are also informed of the resort layout, location of amenities, and the main dining area designated for Day Trippers facility.
For the Ultimate Shark Encounter specifically, guests are directed to the dive shop and advised of the snorkel gear collection time, as well as the scheduled boat departure for the snorkeling activity.
At the snorkeling site, a second safety briefing is delivered, outlining the areas where snorkeling is permitted, as well as the procedures in place to ensure guest safety throughout the encounter.
While we do experience regular sightings of reef sharks, it’s important to note that these are wild animals in their natural environment. Although we have a 95% success rate, sightings cannot be guaranteed. In the rare event that no sharks are sighted during your excursion, we’re pleased to offer guests a complimentary return snorkel trip within 3 days of their original tour date.

Quite a bumpy ride to the location, but the crew was awesome. There were quite a few sharks and it was a bit intimidating getting in the water. Once we were in and got over the fear, my daughter (16) and I really enjoyed the experience!

Really enjoyed our snorkeling experience on the reef near Kuata Island with black and white tip sharks as well as abundant and beautiful marine like. The boat ride to and from the snorkeling site was also an enjoyable ride in the lightly choppy sea. The ferry ride from Denarau marina to Kuata Island was enjoyable passing a number of islands along the way and some beautiful sunset views on the return journey.

Unforgettable Shark Snorkeling Experience in Fiji!
We had an incredible time on the Ultimate Encounter Snorkel with Sharks tour! The kids absolutely loved it and were thrilled to see around 10 sharks up close – such an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
The day was really well-organized from start to finish, and everything ran smoothly. The staff at Barefoot Kuata Resort were amazing – super friendly, helpful, and made us feel completely at ease. The food at the resort was delicious, and the island itself is just stunning.
Barefoot Kuata is truly a slice of paradise – crystal clear waters, beautiful scenery, and the perfect setting for a day of adventure and relaxation. Highly recommend this tour for families looking for a mix of excitement and natural beauty!

Tour operator did not inform that the pickup time was changed to 8AM and not the initial 8:10AM; claimed that they did not have our email eventhough it is in our booking. Made us make our way to the port on our own with no reimbursement. Entire experience was disorganised and rush for us. Nobody told us which island we would be getting off and we didnt have time to look through our voucher as well as we were rushed to get on the cruise. Speaker at top deck was really soft, unable to hear any introduction or instructions.
Once you reach the island, waited at the deck. Everyone had different activity and was confusing - lunch was good though. Snorkel activity had 2 timings (morning or afternoon) which the guides assigns but did not inform till about 5-10min before the morning slot, making everything a rush.
Paid for the video package but there was only 1 videographer for each slot, making it really difficult to get a hold of her for your videos while floating in the waters. Too many people in a single slot, only certain people had the opportunity of having the sharks coming up close as the guide shakes the feed to attract them. Recommend to bring your own waterproof camera.

We did this experience for my son’s 15th birthday upon landing in Fiji. It was a great way to celebrate, and the snorkling was some of the best we saw during our time here.

Friendly staff. Helpful and caring. Great overall experience and snorkeling with the sharks was a tremendous and well curated experience. Bring small bills for little souvenirs. Credit card for drinks and extras. Lunch buffet was delicious and satisfying.

I have a fear of sharks, but I also love conquering fears. I felt safe the whole time and we saw 10-20 sharks all around us. It was an amazing experience. Would 110% recommend. Kuata island/ staff are also amazing.
