I had a great experience at Rainmaker thanks to our guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable and really took the time to try and find the animals we were hoping to see. What stood out most was how patient and considerate he was—especially when I was nervous around certain creatures like spiders. He never rushed us and made sure everyone felt comfortable throughout the tour.
We ended up seeing a lot of snakes, which was surprisingly very cool, and the highlight was definitely spotting a red-eyed tree frog! Overall, it was a fun, memorable experience, and I’d highly recommend this tour—especially with such a thoughtful and dedicated guide.

Ok after a lot of research this sounded fun~ WELL it was not fun sadly! Pick up was completely unorganized which made our tour start late so we ended up with the quick, over booked group that was late. Also we had to stop at the bank (w/o explanation or warning) for someone to pay (very odd) and what was suppose to end by 8:30/9 didn’t conclude until after 10….they did have the best tour beans at dinner tho 😉
Keep looking…..

Eliot was a knowledgeable and thoughtful guide, and the trip was artfully executed, from pickup to drop off and every moment in between. This was one of the highlights of our visit to Quepos.

We booked a rainmaker park walking night tour and instead were taken to a boat for a seated tour of mangrove area. Not at all what was advertised. There were also 16 people in our group and the ad for tour specifically stated that groups limited to less than 10.

Edgar gave our group a great tour of the jungle at night. He’s very knowledgable of jungle wildlife and was enthusiastic. The abundance and diversity of wildlife was surprising. The whole experience, including dinner afterwards was quite enjoyable. Thanks for a great tour.

Incredible experience! Anderson was an outstanding guide, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We saw so many extraordinary animals. Rainmaker Park is a special place and at night it is magical.

We had the best time doing a night tour at Rainmaker with our tour guide Enderson. He was SO fun and enthusiastic, and you can tell he loves what he does. He was able to spot lots of wildlife we would never have been able to see on our own. After the tour, we ate a nice dinner at the shelter house. It was simple, but very good! Highly recommend! A really cool experience all around.

Great experience seeing night dwellers of the jungle. We saw frogs, cicadas, and whole slew of different insect. The dinner after was plenty and delicious.

Soooo worth going with a tour! Can’t believe how much there is to see at night! Our guide, Eliot, was super duper knowledgable and although softly spoken, he made sure all the people in our group heard what he was telling us about each animal. He spoke perfect Spanish and English, so was able to translate everything. His zoological knowledge was fantastic - he knew pretty much every animal to species or genus level which is crazy impressive.
Food was good and Costa Rican too - a beans and rice situation with a meat and veggie option. Nice to eat something genuinely local.
YOU SHOUDL ALWAYS KNOW THAT ANY TOUR INVOLVING WILDLIFE CANNOT GUARANTEE SPECIFIC SIGHTINGS. That said, it feels like a fairly safe bet that you’d see lots of frogs and invertebrates on this tour and if you’re the kind of person who’s overjoyed by that you’ll have a wonderful time!
Details:
- pick up was arranged and they showed up exactly on time
- journey from Quepos to Rainmaker forest took about 30-40 mins and was bumpy but in an air conditioned vehicle. Easy peasy
- the tour concludes at about 8 / 8.30pm ish and dinner is after, so it’s worth eating a snack or something beforehand
- you can leave bags in the car if needed, but they’re accessible once you eat
- toilets and space to change once you arrive
- would recommend close toed shoes just due to standing close to leaf litter and the tiny potential for insects / snakes getting involved
- we wore long sleeves and covered up because of insects
- there are some steps and that but it’s not too physically exerting
- it is LITERALLY pitch black everywhere that you don’t have your torch pointed
- animals we spotted were mostly amphibians / reptiles (lizards and frogs) and invertebrates

The tour was good, we saw lots of amphibians and insects. The guide was very knowledgeable and kind. However, he would not allow me to use flash photography. This would be understandable if it was mentioned in the online tour rules, the park riles, or if something was said before beginning the tour. Instead I was carrying around my camera with flash the entire time. I have a professional camera with an external flash and soft box. The entire world could see I intended to use the camera with flash, but nothing was said until the tour was well underway. I would not have taken the tour if I knew I couldn’t use flash photography. Its a crazy take when the advertisement photo of the tour is a red eyed tree frog being photographed with two distinct flashes being used. I would not recommend this tour if you are a photographer that enjoys macro.

The tour was incredible, Kenneth was very informative and made the whole experience wonderful! It was truly amazing!
Kevin_J, Feb 2026
Very cool! Appreciate Kenneth’s extra efforts to stop before and after the tour to show us great wildlife. Plus, he found everything and helped get the best pictures!

A great way to see life in the jungle after dark.
Javier was a fantastic guide and sent us some great pictures he took on the tour.

We did Rainmaker Park again with Jade Tours for the night tour. Pickup and drop-off were exactly as promised, and dinner (chicken or veggie fried rice) was fine.
Rainmaker at night, though? I highly recommend it. The difference compared to daytime is vast — there’s so much more life. This was my friend’s first night walk (my sixth in Costa Rica), and we saw a lot: multiple frogs (including glass frogs), turtles, snakes, a sloth, and plenty of insects. The park itself was excellent, and I’d absolutely do a night tour there again.
Unfortunately, I can’t recommend Jade Tours. The guides weren’t friendly and didn’t really make an effort to bring the group together or set a good tone, and the group size felt too big for a night walk on narrow paths. In the dark, people end up spread out and some miss sightings. It got even worse because we kept overlapping with another group, so at points it felt like 10–11 of us together, including both guides. One of the guides we encountered was also openly aggressive/hostile, and our guide still seemed to want to stick close to them, which didn’t help the experience.
The biggest issue, though, was the constant handling of animals. The guides repeatedly stepped off the path to pick things up — frogs, insects, and even went into the water to grab a turtle. The turtle immediately pulled into its shell, clearly stressed, then ran when it was put down… and the guide chased it and picked it up again.
The glass frog incident was the moment that really crossed the line for me. We reached a stream and, without explaining anything, the guides just stepped straight into the water. For a second, some of us genuinely wondered if we were meant to follow them in. It turned out they were searching for a glass frog. We assumed they were just scanning the area and would point one out if they found it — but instead they kept looking until they grabbed one, put it on a leaf, and brought it out for everyone.
Then it got worse: the frog was held up on the leaf with a light underneath it so two guests could film it, for at least a couple of minutes. I waited patiently for everyone to finish so I could take a natural photo. When I asked if they could please just put the frog down so I could photograph it without staging it, the guide got defensive. He snapped at me, acting like I was being unreasonable because now it “had to be put back.”
Bottom line: Rainmaker night tours are incredible, but this company needs to change its culture around wildlife handling, improve group management (smaller groups, less merging), and work on basic friendliness and atmosphere.
Response from Host, Feb 2026
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the wildlife and unique nighttime experience at Rainmaker Park — seeing glass frogs, turtles, sloths, and more at night is exactly why we love these tours. We’re also happy that the hotel pickup, drop-off, and meal met your expectations.
That said, we sincerely apologize for the issues you experienced with our guides and group management. Your concerns about group size, overlapping tours, and the overall tone of the guides are serious. Night tours require careful pacing and communication, and it’s clear that in your case we fell short of providing a cohesive, enjoyable experience for everyone.
Regarding wildlife handling, we appreciate your observations and agree that minimizing direct contact with animals is critical. While our guides aim to ensure guests see wildlife that is otherwise difficult to spot, your feedback makes it clear that some practices — including moving or handling animals for photos — crossed the line. We will immediately review our procedures and reinforce ethical wildlife viewing practices with all guides to prioritize animal welfare and ensure a natural experience for guests.
Your points about friendliness, atmosphere, and group coordination are equally important. We will take your feedback to heart and work on improving communication, group size management, and the overall guest experience.
We deeply value your constructive comments, and we hope that despite these issues, you were still able to enjoy the night tour itself. Rainmaker at night is magical, and we want to make sure future tours reflect that experience fully and ethically.
Kind regards,

Very fun and unique tour! The rainforest at night is something everyone should experience while they’re here. The cacophony of sound yet peaceful feeling you get is amazing. We saw a variety of frogs, insects, lizards, and flora. We took our 10 month old as well and he had a blast!
Derek_W, Jan 2026
We saw many insects, 3 snakes, and frogs. Our guide was excited to find animals to show us. He struggled with English a bit. The food was good- beans and chicken with rice. I’d go again.
Emily_T, Dec 2025
A relaxed journey through the rainforest with a very knowledgeable guide. We saw four varieties of snake, the red eyed tree frog, lizards, and an angry bird. Then we were treated to excellent food in a lit-up pavilion.

Definitely a must do adventure on your Costa Rica trip. Pick up at our hotel was on time and the groups were small to allow all to experience all of the animals and sights. Our guide Edgar was excellent — sharing his wealth of knowledge on all the species and their unique characteristics. We were very fortunate to see up close many types of frogs including the red tree frog, insects, snakes, spiders, scorpions, lizards and birds. We were all provided a flashlight and the trail was sometimes muddy but walkable. Wear boots or shoes that can get wet and muddy! The pace was comfortable and Edgar encouraged us to alert him if we spotted anything he missed (which didn’t happen often). Edgar was helpful in taking photos or videos so bring a nice camera or your phone. If you are worried about getting bit by mosquitoes— do not be. I was wearing short sleeves and long hiking pants and did not have one single bite on me. The dinner after the hike was served under a large pavilion in the park — a vegetarian option or a traditional Costa Rican meal of rice with chicken, beans and a salad/slaw, water and ice tea. Very fresh and tasty and plenty portion size. The bathrooms were clean.
Very good value for this special and memorable experience.

The guide takes awesome pictures of all the creatures we saw and then sends them to you at the end but you need an IPhone or whatapp to get them. The red-eyed frog pictures were the best!

Very cool experience. Javier is an amphibian expert and was able to locate a great deal of unique species in the jungle. The meal at the end was simple but nice way to wrap up the night. Javier took photos of all the creatures and made sure to airdrop it to us at the very end.
KTR, Aug 2025
Javier was awesome. Very intimate tour. Way off the beaten path. We felt like the only ones in the jungle. Lots of sounds, frogs, snakes, spiders, scorpions. A little more strenuous bit worth it! Bring waterproof / mud proof boots. Yummy meal at the end. Thanks!
Susan_D, Jul 2025
Our guide Edgar was funny and so knowledgeable . We saw many types of animals: frogs, snake, poisonous spider, many insects. We have a very energetic 8 year old and Edgar was able to keep his attention. Great experience!
Tamara_W, May 2025
We were excited to go in this tour, sounded very promising. We had gone on a different night tour the night before that was fantastic so maybe our expectations were unrealistically high. Didn’t see many animals or much of anything except the cat eyed snakes at the end although I myself did not see them. Very boring. Didn’t take any pics. Guide just seemed to go through the motions. Food at the end was just ok. I wish we had done something else with our time and money.
Li_M, May 2025
Nice tour! On the way back, our guide spotted a two toed sloth hanging on a rope above the street. We got off the van and got a very good look of the sloth. It was just awesome!

Rainmaker is a small conservation park teeming with wildlife. The night tour provided a chance to hear a symphony of frogs, scorpion under a black light, walking over a suspension bridge in search of wildlife. So glad transportation was provided especially during the evening.
Zachary_H, May 2025
We really enjoyed the Night Jungle Tour at Rainmaker Park. Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, helping us spot lots of amazing wildlife that only comes out after dark. The frogs were especially cool to see! The walk was easy to manage and felt safe even at night. The tour ended with a very tasty traditional dinner. Overall, a great way to experience the rainforest in a different light.

Great tour!! We were fortunate to have 2 guides. 1 of them was Armando. Very friendly and knowledgeable person about the various snakes, spiders, frogs, moth, etc... we saw. If you like to hear the sounds of the night and see what's crawling around you then this is the tour for you. Don't hesitate. Thanks Armando. Pura Vida!!
Nancy_P, Apr 2025
We saw so many frogs and insects on our nighttime walk. We also saw some bats lizards and a snake, too. We had two guides one in the front and one in the back for safety and it was so interesting and exciting, we are so glad we went

We had a great time on this tour as a group of 7. Our guide Javier was excellent! We loved the experience at Rainmaker as we saw 25 or 30 different species of animals, including numerous frog species, 2 snakes, a fruit bat, scorpion, etc. Javier even took us to view a pair of nesting Scarlet Macaws in Quepos on the way out to Rainmaker. The meal that was offered was simple, but fresh and tasty. A great all around experience and excellent value!

Armando was a great guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and made the experience totally enjoyable. Def a highlight of our trip to Manuel Antonio.
