This was a fantastic day tour and a great way to see the smaller villages in Provence if you don’t want to drive. Thomas was an excellent guide, and I felt like we had a great overview of the region. The trip was well-paced and I felt like we had just the right amount of time to independently explore each village.

We had Emmanuel and he was an excellent and knowledgeable tour guide. We greatly enjoyed visiting the towns, each with their unique personality and beautiful scenery and tucked away in the Provencal countryside. We felt it was a relaxing day with just the right number of stops and a wonderful way to experience and learn about Provence. Our biggest complaint is not having enough time to adequately explore each town but that's a reasonable point considering how many we visited. We had lunch in Gordes and visited the market in L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue (Sunday morning). I would highly recommend taking this day trip and seeing these places. It was a memorable part of our trip to France.

Luberon medieval villages

The little medieval villages of the Luberon district are really worth a day tour. At this time of the year however (late November) they are a bit like ghost towns as most of the shops are closed particularly at Gourds as it is not tourist season and inhabitants tend to leave. But without a lot of tourists it is easier to admire the architecture and landscape. Our guide Remy was great. My only complaint is that we were in a car with 7 of us and as Australians we are used to fresh air and tend to get claustrophobic and uncomfortable in the closed areas with the same hot air circulating. I am an asthmatic and had to ask to move from the back to the front of the car as I was having trouble breathing. I was pleased to get out of the car at the end. We never understand in Europe and America why houses are so closed up and even in our accommodation travelling through Europe when it is 0 degrees outside we need at least a gap in the window to let some fresh air in and the stale air out otherwise we tend to get sick.

Beautiful Day

Sebastian was a great guide. He gave interesting commentary on the drive and was a careful driver. The towns we visited provided a good overview of the area. I would suggest that Viator be more clear as to which cities are included on the tour for the day that is booked. We did not visit one town that Viator listed.

The 4 cities we visited...

The 4 cities we visited in Luberon were amazing. I am pleased we visited. We felt our driver drove too fast on winding switchback roads and too close to cars in front of our van of 9 people. Also always passing cars on the freeway, sometimes going over the speed limit.

We were 'chauffered' to 6...

We were 'chauffered' to 6 or 7 different villages in the Luberon that we never could have navigated on our own. In a Mercedes van! The leader was a lovely woman, and English was her first language! However, we did expect that the leader would guide is somewhat once we got to each village, but instead she dropped us, told us a few things about the village, and came back to pick us up at the appointed time. The tour would have been so much less stressful if she had been available to answer Q's as they came up.

A great day of exploring these entrancing villages

We much enjoyed market day in Lourmarin and bought some excellent tapenade and bread to enjoy for dinner. We didn't visit the Abbaye de Sénanque in favor of going to Gordes on the guide's recommendation. We also visited Roussillon and Fontaine du Vaucluse. While it was nice to get out into the countryside, I think we spent too much time in Gordes and Fontaine du Vaucluse which are very small villages and have little to offer. It was extremely hot and it felt like we were killing time in these places. I would rate the trip as ok but not exceptional.

Each village had its own different charm

Each of the villages were quaint, well preserved, easy to navigate, and memorable. The market day to Apt was a little overwhelming with crowded and narrow streets and stalls on many main streets. I love markets but like more organization like fruits and vegetables in one area. Clothes, pottery, food, and regional products were all mixed up. A real bonus to the trip was our guide Pepe. He was warm and very knowledgeable.

Great tour

This tour was absolutely amazing, Marion was a brilliant guide. We got to visit four different towns with a lovely break on an air-conditioned bus between each one. Marion was a really knowledgeable guide, very clear and great fun with lots of personal recommendations too!

Memorable Provence

Our guide Thomas was great! Gave us a detailed history of each place visited. Happily answer all our questions. We started off with the L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, where we had plenty of time to shop and walk around. Next it was on to Fontaine du Vancluse for a short hike and lunch, stunningly beautiful! A photo stop at Gordes, Bonnieux, and visits to Roussillon and Lourmarin ( all gorgeous with breathtaking scenery) All in all a memorable day of history, beauty and great shopping!

Beautiful hilltop villages

The villages were beautiful and the market was bigger than expected. A vibrant scene. The driver was a bit quiet. We were hoping for information about the history and culture of the villages prior to arriving at each one. That’s been our experience with other tours. This driver shared very little info.

Visit beautiful French villages without driving and parking stress

I loved my day visiting 4 villages of Luberon! I chose to go on a Friday since that is when Lourmarin has their market. My guide was wonderful and she even did the tour in French as well, since I am learning though I was the only one there who requested the tour originally in French. The info was useful and interesting and she answered all our questions (I wish I remembered her name, this was a few months ago now). We were a group of 6 and got to know each other a bit, but we also had our free time in the villages to explore. We had enough time, I think. I went on this trip solo and would recommend to anyone! I rented a car during this trip, but felt more at ease being taken from village to village by a professional and local.

Best way to see Luberon villages

We booked this tour through Viator but learnt that A La Francaise has locations throughout the country as well so maybe checkout their website too. Our guide was Rémy and he was brimming with knowledge, funny and engaging. He was exceptional at navigating driving through the narrowest and windiest of tiny hilltop towns in a small mini bus with a group of 8 of us. Really don’t bother attempting to drive yourself, you will never be able to get anywhere close to parking near town. We stopped at Lourmarin for market day where we were given 2 hours to independently explore. We bought ourselves an impressive picnic because the cheese, charcuterie, fresh fruit and tomatoes were all irresistible. Next Roussillon was as charming a village as you’d expect and we sat down in the town square to enjoy our picnic before hiking to the top. Finally at Fontaine de Vaucluse we saw the most stunningly spectacular clear river. I wish to come back and kayak down it. We drove through Gordes which is pretty but mostly built around a grand 5 star hotel. I do wish to comeback next year and do a private tour of some of the other villages, but I really appreciated having larger chunks of time exploring these villages vs just driving through everything. Our last stop was the famous Abbey Senanque but to be honest this was the most commercial disappointing stop. However, I understand everyone is so keen on it that they have to include it in the tour. Besides the gift shop and the grounds, you don’t actually get to see any of the abbey itself! Remy being a wealth of other trivia taught us to order a pastisse aperitif right. He gave us 3 recommendations for restaurants in Aix and knocked it out of the ballpark on all 3. He was our favorite guide across all 2 weeks of tours we did in South of France.

One day to see the charming villages in Provence

Greg the driver and guide is very friendly and knowledgeable. He told us a lot of history of Provence on the way. Each of the villages we visited were unique and different from each other. The itinerary is very well thought out and good for someone like us who only had a du or 2 to see Provence.
