We had an excellent experience on our customized private 8-hour Tokyo tour with Yuki. From the very beginning, he was patient, kind, attentive, and incredibly accommodating to our needs. He took the time to get to know us and understand what we were most interested in seeing, which made the entire experience feel very personalized. He was flexible throughout the day and responsive when we wanted to spend extra time exploring certain areas, tailoring the tour to perfectly suit our interests.
This tour was a fantastic way to see many of Tokyo’s major highlights while also learning the history and cultural significance behind them. Yuki’s knowledge of Japan was impressive, and his informative explanations truly enriched our experience and helped us gain a much deeper understanding of the places we visited.
Yuki was also an outstanding ambassador for Japan. It was clear how much he cares about his country and how proud he is to share it with visitors. His enthusiasm and passion made the tour even more memorable.
Communication was excellent from start to finish. Yuki communicated with us beforehand, arrived promptly at the agreed time, clearly explained how the tour would work, and confirmed what we wanted to prioritize during the day. He did his best to fit everything in while still making the experience relaxed and enjoyable.

Best start to our tour of Japan. We had 6 hours with our guide Zenji, and wish we had booked for longer. Zenji collected us from our hotel and took us around the highlights of Tokyo using public transport. He took us to shrines, and told us the history and etiquette to ensure we got the most from our visit. He chose a fabulous local restaurant for lunch in Tsukiji Market that we would never have found on our own. Local knowledge being invaluable. It felt as if we had a friend taking us around the city that could otherwise have been a daunting experience. We’re very glad to have had Zenji as our guide.

Skip this one. Although our guide, Yu was super nice, she didn’t seem to be well informed about the city. Turns out, she’s lived here only a year. We spent way a lot of our day on the train or walking to the train. We started at the market but didn’t know we’d be going there first and we’d just had breakfast. That was kind of a waste although it was interesting to see it. The temple seems like a tourist trap. Very crowded and lot of vendors selling souvenirs. The palace might have been great but after taking forever to get there, turns out it was closed. I feel like our guide should have known that.

Yuuki was a wonderful and thoughtful guide. He showed us many great restaurants to try on our tour. He also spent time to send us a list of food to try on our trip.
He made sure we were comfortable using the train system so we would be comfortable and successful on our trip.

We have used Viator for many quality excursions; Europe, Southeast Asia, N.Africa, etc. However, our experience with our guide Naoki in Tokyo was by far the best. His engaging personality combined with his knowledge of the history, culture, cuisine ( including street) and the use of local transportation across Tokyo made the tour a once in a lifetime experience. We had an outstanding experience in Tokyo thanks to our guide, Ikuto. He met my adult son and me at our hotel right on time, and from the start, everything felt easy and well organized.
Ikuto connected naturally with both of us and made the day feel personal rather than scripted. We covered an incredible amount without ever feeling rushed, including Senso-ji Temple, Meiji Jingu Shrine, Harajuku, Tokyo Tower, TeamLabs, and the Shibuya Crossing.
What stood out most was how thoughtful he was throughout the day. He shared meaningful context at each stop and kept things engaging the entire time. He also took us to a special ramen spot that turned into one of the highlights of the trip.
Ikuto is knowledgeable, reliable, and genuinely enjoyable to spend time with. It felt less like a tour and more like exploring Tokyo with someone who truly cares about your experience. I would highly recommend him to anyone visiting.

We had a wonderful day in Tokyo with our fantastic private guide, Fuma. He was informative, understanding and assisted us in every way. Fuma took us to the Sensoji Temple area in Asakusa by train, something we could never have done on our own, considering Tokyo's complex train network! Fuma's cultural and historical knowledge was excellent, and we learned so much about the culture and religion of Japan in such a short time. He arranged the best shopping opportunities for us in the surrounding area, and found an amazing Sushi restaurant for lunch, before returning us safely to our hotel. A fantastic day, and we highly recommend Fuma if you're looking for a top-level private guide!

My wife and I can’t say enough positive things about this tour and our entire experience. Shoma understood that we were looking to see as much as we could in eight hours while never feeling rushed. He was able to plan out an itinerary that included temples, markets, great food, pop culture, historical landmarks, and wonderful insight into Japanese society and history. We got to become pros on the subway and got a great initial orientation of the city. Shoma is such an easy going, kind, and insightful tour guide. It felt as if we were all just good friends hanging out and talking. Shoma really went out of his way to make sure we were getting the exact experience we were hoping for. We booked a one-day personalized tour in Japan through Viator and had a mixed experience.
Our guide, Lisa, was very kind, friendly, and clearly doing her best to make the day enjoyable. That said, she was quite young and relatively inexperienced. For a tour at this price point, we were expecting a guide with deeper knowledge of Japan’s history and culture, as well as more confidence navigating the subway system and planning the day efficiently.
While we still managed to see some great spots and had a pleasant time overall, it didn’t feel like good value for money given what we paid for a “personalized” experience. It felt more like spending the day with a university student (she mentioned she had been doing this for about a month) rather than a seasoned professional guide.
We chose this tour based on strong reviews, so this may vary depending on the guide you’re assigned. However, we would only recommend this experience if you can ensure you’re paired with a more senior, experienced guide.

It was a rainy day in Tokyo. Our young guide, although very personable and well-intentioned, hardly had any experience in the field. We had been offered two different itinerary options by the tour provider. Many of the sights listed on our chosen option were not visited for lack of time. Too much time spent on trains and subways. Although both my husband and I had the required passes, we had to cover all of the guide’s travel expenses, which added to the cost and delays. For those reasons, I do not recommend this tour, unless you are fully aware of the above-noted shortfalls.

In terms of transportation costs, as stated in the tour details, public transportation expenses — including the guide’s — are to be covered by the guests. We understand that this may have felt inconvenient when combined with travel time, and we will work on improving how we communicate this more clearly in advance.

We loved how customized the tour was for us. And Shuta was extremely knowledgeable about each of the sites. We are a family of 5 and there was something for everyone. We even added a stop at Yomiuri Giants stadium to buy some gear. I highly recommend the van tour to save time instead of riding the subway. It was way more walking and train riding than we really wanted. If I did again, I'd opt for taxi option. Fish market was great. Shopping area he took us too, not what we were looking for. He was very interested in showing us the things we asked for but very new and it showed. Plus he was very young, an older more experienced guide probably would have suited us better. Plus was told there was an added "travel" fee for him. Minimal but why doesn't Viator cover this or explain it. The price was $179/ea plus his travel fee plus train/subway tickets. Just so you know. Not what we are used to as experienced Viator users. All in all, Tokyo is a very nice, very clean, very safe city.

However, we do offer private taxi/SUV options, which may better suit your preferences for a more comfortable experience.

Regarding transportation costs, as stated on the booking page and in our pre-tour messages, public transportation fees are not included in the tour price, and guests are kindly asked to cover both their own and the guide’s transportation expenses. Our tour with Keito was super chill and the perfect way to start our first day in Japan. Keito reached out beforehand to ask a few questions, which made everything feel personalized right from the start. We did a walking and subway tour of the city, and it was such a relief not to be part of a huge group or try to navigate the subway on our own.
We visited a few fun spots, and Keito took us to places at times when they weren’t crowded, making the experience even better. Within minutes, she felt like part of our family, which made the whole day feel warm and easygoing. It was a fantastic introduction to Japan and set the tone for the rest of our trip. Yuki was an amazing guide and a very personable young man. He had spent time studying in the USA so we had a lot to talk about, which was easy to do with his strong English skills. He took us everywhere we asked to go as well as some additional spots along the way. He provided additional information about all of our stops. Tokyo is a big city and we were only there for 3 days, so our time with Yuki was invaluable. Highly recommended.
