High season in the Greek Islands is during the summer months—crowds peak in July and August. However, the season extends from May to October if you want to explore Cephalonia without the summer buzz. The coves and villages of Cephalonia are best reached by rental car. Be sure to book a rental car in advance of your trip, especially if you're visiting during the summer season. It's possible to explore the island using its extensive network of buses, but schedules are limited so might cut into your vacation time. Group and private tours are a great option if you want to visit wineries without worrying about driving afterwards. Biking, hiking, and boating are also available.
Most visits to Cephalonia focus on beaches and fishing villages, but no visit to the island is complete without a day trip to visit Mt. Ainos. Check out sweeping views of the island from the top of the mountain and explore Valsamata, a village that was abandoned after an earthquake in the 1950s. It’s possible to plan a day trip with your own car or by booking a tour and driver.
