This is a flexible 6 to 8 hour day tour that combines one of the Westfjords’ most famous natural sights with an exciting off road adventure and the option to slow things down afterward. We begin the day with a visit to Dynjandi, the region’s most iconic waterfall. A short and scenic walk leads past a series of smaller falls to the main cascade, where the sheer scale and power of the waterfall really stand out. From there we continue to Þingeyri for a two hour ATV ride. The route takes us off road through varied terrain, including a river crossing and a forest section, before climbing up to the top of Sandafell. From the summit, we enjoy wide open views over Dýrafjörður before descending back toward the village. Due to the harshness of the environment, the Hornstrandir area was abandoned completely by the last of its inhabitants in the early 1950s. Since 1974 the flora and fauna have been protected and now arctic foxes, birds, seals, and plants have thrived undisturbed. This is the perfect full-day hike to enjoy all of what the area has to offer. You´ll leave by boat from Ísafjörður in the morning for Aðalvík. Continuing on foot to the abandoned settlement at Hesteyri. Once we reach Hesteyri warm drinks and pancakes will await us at the Doctors House Café. We will return from Hesteyri in the late afternoon and be back to Ísafjörður. This is a moderate hike for people in good shape. Hiking distance is about 11 km on rough ground and elevation is about 300 m.

Fantastic waterfall, farm and story telling!

Our guide Tom did a great job entertaining us along the drive to the waterfall and family farm. The waterfall is worth every minute of the drive to get there. Climb to the top, it is different at every level. The family farm visit was excellent! They had their young son tell us all about the sheep and it was a highlight of the trip! Also served yummy cake and drinks.

Great excursion

We booked this as a shore excursion from Isafjordur while aboard the Celebrity Silhouette. Communication from Viator was excellent. Finding our tour was super easy. We arrived early and were placed on a minibus that still had 2 spaces available. At first we balked at it because my husband and I were separated. He was happy in his single seat and I made new friends in the back row. Our driver was great. The trip to Dynjandi was beautiful. Those tunnels are crazy. We had a typical Icelandic summer day - cool and rainy. The waterfall was beautiful. I felt we had ample time to explore. We made some photo stops and a brief stop in a village on the way back. I wish we had more time in the village but other than that everything was great and of course the weather cleared up as we returned to the port. This was my first time booking with Viator and I would recommend them to anyone. So easy. Great excursion.

The best tour guide and...

The best tour guide and driver! He is a hometown guy! Knows so much and shares. Very wonderful. Long walk out to waterfall, but flat pavers. No problems for walking. The café has wonderful hot chocolate. Pay toilets using credit cards. On the drive back, our driver stopped for photos across from dock and town, then showed us through his town. We had the best day!

Amazing small group tour!

Very much enjoyed the small group over the large bus tours. The late afternoon was nice as most of the bigger tours were leaving when we arrived. Plenty of time to walk up to the falls. Enjoy the secret tour to see the small towns. Simon our guide was very thorough and provided lots of interesting facts.

A Heartwarming Whale Experience

Wonderful! Yes, we saw whales, and it was also a sacred and moving experience. The guide's love and knowledge of whales was contagious. It was beautiful to experience the whales through his eyes. He also let us hold baleen and see whale tail pictures to help us identify which ones we were seeing. Delightful experience! (We went in July)

Perfect trip! I would highly recommend booking this experience

Loved our trip out to the falls! Even though the day was rainy and cold, our guide made this experience well worth it. After our visit to the falls, the off-road portion of the trip was very exciting, and the climb ended with a breathtaking 360 view. We loved this trip and will for sure be booking it again in the future!
