Carlos, Borges, and the Soul of Buenos Aires

I have travelled a fair bit over the years, but rarely have I encountered a guide quite like Carlos. To call this a city tour would be a terrible injustice. It was closer to spending an afternoon with Jorge Luis Borges, had Borges possessed a better sense of humour, a more cheerful disposition, and an encyclopedic knowledge of Buenos Aires. Carlos is a wonderful character. Warm, funny, immensely knowledgeable, and blessed with that distinctly Argentine ability to turn the most ordinary conversation into a philosophical reflection on history, politics, football, or the peculiarities of the human condition. One moment we were discussing the grand ambitions of San Martín, the next the enduring mythology of Evita Perón, and before long the ghosts of Gardel, Piazzolla, Maradona, and even the formidable Sarmiento had joined us for the afternoon. Buenos Aires is a magnificent city, full of contradictions. European grandeur and Latin American passion, faded aristocracy and revolutionary fervour, melancholy tango and the almost religious devotion to football. Carlos somehow makes sense of it all. He knows the buildings, the streets, the history, and, more importantly, the stories behind them. He speaks of his city with the affection of a man who knows all its flaws and loves it anyway. He is also a devoted husband and proud father of two children, one a musician and the other a high school student. I particularly enjoyed hearing about his family. There is something reassuring about a man who can move effortlessly from the political machinations of Juan Domingo Perón to the everyday joys and tribulations of raising children. At various points I half expected Julio Cortázar to emerge from a café, Mafalda to offer some devastating observation about Argentine politics, or Diego Maradona himself to appear and explain why the hand of God was, in fact, entirely justified. By the end of the tour, I felt I had learned more about Argentina than I could have from a week of reading history books. More importantly, I felt I had made a friend. Borges once wrote that every man should think that his own city is the most beautiful in the world. After an afternoon with Carlos, I am beginning to suspect that Buenos Aires may actually have a legitimate claim. Five stars seem rather miserly. I would happily award this man the entire Southern Cross. ¡Gracias, Carlos! May your mate always be warm, your asados plentiful, your children prosperous, and your beloved Buenos Aires forever as gloriously complicated as the people who inhabit it.

Tango and musical show not to be missed.

The reviews were right on target. This is an amazing show particularly if you want an authentic and intimate experience. It’s a small venue with likely less than 50 people. The tables surround the central floor level stage where the musicians and dancers perform. Not only is the tango dancing amazing, but the musical performances are also spectacular. The show was over too soon. Highly recommend.

It was one of the best...

It was one of the best experiences I have had in Argentina. The team that took us to the El Ombu hacienda, Sofía and Diego, were excellent people, especially Sofia, who was present at every moment. Her kindness 1nd her knowledge of what we were going to enjoy made the experience even more worth being part of that group. The treatment at the El Ombu hacienda and the special events completed a perfect stay for a wonderful Sunday.

Bus and show

The Tango Bus and Dinner Show was a really fun experience from start to finish! The pickup was easy and convenient, and the bus was comfortable, making the evening feel relaxed from the beginning. The show had a great variety of different acts, so there was always something entertaining to watch. The food was good, and the wine was a nice addition to the evening. Overall, it was a great time and a fun way to experience an evening of entertainment and tango. One tip: make sure you bring some USD for tips, in $10 quantities, you have to tip various people. Overall, a fun and enjoyable experience!

Barbecues, dancing, and horses!

What a fun and memorable day, we opted for the upgraded experience and it was worth every penny. Firstly, skip breakfast. You won't be leaving your anywhere near hungry. Empanadas are served to tide you over before your sumptuous lunch. As for the horseback riding it was enjoyable and short but well worth the experience. As a matter fact a nickname I will be using from now on was given to me by one of the gauchos who helped me off my horse: "Guapo Gordo" 😂. The highlight for me however was the Asado lunch, what an amazing feast and don't be shy in asking for second as there is more than plenty. After loosening a couple buttons you are made to dance with the gauchos, just got with it and have fun! Wholeheartedly recommended

Must See!

I loved visiting the falls! Wear comfortable shoes. There is a lot of walking to get the best views. Please read the information before booking for who can/cannot take the boat ride. People with medical issues, hearing aids, etc. Very important!! I would recommend with medical clearance. I'm 72 years old. The ride through the tropical forest was great! I saw monkeys , and we were on the look-out for toucans. There are steep steps to and from the boat ride. I had a great experience! My tour guide was so knowledgeable! Once in a lifetime experience. The falls is a must see!!

An amazing tour!

We had a great fun exploring Buenos Aires with Martin. He is not only a knowledgeable guide but a very nice person. He answered tons of our questions and had an interesting conversation about football and local history with us. We visited main tourist attractions of the city and then had lunch in the restaurant where he told us about the food there and suggested the items from the menu. The food was very delicious. He also gave us suggestions about other tours and explained what and how. We really appreciate Martin for his excellent work. It is visible how much he likes his job and his city.
