Itineraries for Your Trip to Marrakech
3 Days in Marrakech for First Timers
Marrakech is a place I return to again and again. I never get tired of the city’s juxtaposed ambiance: hidden courtyards behind chaotic squares, quiet rooftops above crowded souks, and the proximity of the vast Agafay Desert and Atlas Mountains, an easy drive from the busy and buzzing historic city center. A 3-day Marrakech visit gives you time to explore the city in its entirety and get out of the hustle and bustle to discover its tranquility, too. Here’s what to do if you have three days in Marrakech and are visiting the Moroccan hub for the very first time.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the Jemaa el-Fna square, a vibrant introduction to the city’s souks.
The sun is strong in Marrakech, so don’t forget to pack sunblock.
Navigating the Marrakech Medina can be intense, but it’s the perfect way to dive right into the soul of the city. You can start out by wandering around and shopping on your own, but I highly recommend a shopping tour, where a guide can help you learn the ins and outs of Moroccan bartering.
Getting out into the Agafay Desert is easy—it’s just a short drive away from Marrakech. This afternoon, share the sands on a camel ride or 4WD tour; then dine beneath the stars, all while basking in the serenity of this vast, unique landscape.
The Yves Saint Laurent Majorelle Garden is one of the most peaceful attractions in Marrakech. On day two, visit additional top sites such as the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, and the Ben Youssef Madrasa. If you take a sightseeing tour, a guide can explain the history of these impressive landmarks.
No stay in Marrakech is complete without understanding more about Moroccan food. You could take a food tour this afternoon, but a cooking class will teach you the ins and outs of Marrakech cooking, including how to select spices and make traditional Moroccan mint tea.
Start day three on a half-day tour or day trip that gets you out of the busy city and into Moroccan nature. Some of the top day trips from Marrakech head to Berber villages, the Atlas Mountains, traditional hammams, and nearby waterfalls.
Marrakech’s souks come alive at night, especially when it’s hot during the day. If you’re staying at a riad (a traditional Moroccan house turned B&B), simply head out for an evening walk or join a night tour to explore the city’s food stalls, street vendors, and more.
