Itineraries for Your Trip to Istanbul
2 Days in Istanbul for First Timers
Two days in Istanbul let you explore beyond the must-see attractions and discover the city’s European and Asian sides. Split your time between continents, experiencing the UNESCO World Heritage highlights in and near Sultanahmet, and then spend day two navigating the sights and tastes on the eastern side of the Bosphorus. Here’s how to do Istanbul in 48 hours.
Plan summer sightseeing carefully and visit indoor sights in the hottest part of the day.
If you only have time for one thing, make it the dazzling Blue Mosque.
The historic Sultanahmet neighborhood is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to many of Istanbul’s most-visited sights. Opt for a guided walking tour to gain insight into the architectural landmarks and learn more about the city’s fascinating history. Visit the site of the ancient Roman Hippodrome, marvel at the azure mosaics of the Blue Mosque, and explore the Byzantine-era Hagia Sophia. End the morning shopping for souvenirs at the Grand Bazaar.
Hop on the tram and ride across the Golden Horn to explore the districts of Karaköy and Beyoglu. Stop by Taksim Square, the epicenter of the modern city, browse the shops along the main boulevard of Istiklal Street, then wander downhill into the atmospheric Galata quarter, with its steep cobbled lanes and many independent galleries and boutiques. Finally, climb the 14th-century Galata Tower for a magnificent view over the city.
As the sun sets over the city, set sail along the Bosphorus, the scenic strait that separates Istanbul’s European and Asian sides, and see the city from the water as you dine on board and enjoy traditional Turkish dancing. Cruise past the grand Ottoman palaces of Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi, admire historical landmarks such as Rumeli Fortress and Maiden’s Tower and pass under the famous Bosphorus Bridge.
Kick off your second day with a traditional Turkish breakfast at the Spice Bazaar, then ride the ferry across the Bosphorus to the Asian side. Spend the rest of the morning exploring the Kadikoy neighborhood, which is renowned for the lively Kadikoy Market and varied street food. It’s the perfect spot to taste some of Istanbul’s best baklava, accompanied by Turkish coffee, and experience local life.
After catching the ferry back to the European side, head back to Sultanahmet to visit Topkapi Palace. A guided tour is the most efficient way to explore the sprawling imperial complex, where you can walk in the footsteps of the Ottoman sultans, peek inside the treasury, and visit the harem. In springtime, the palace gardens are famous for their colorful tulip displays.
For your final evening, experience one of Turkey’s most unique spiritual traditions by attending a Mevlevi Sema ceremony at the Hodjapasha Culture Center. See the whirling dervishes in action and learn more about the ancient Sufi ritual protected on the UNESCO list of Intangible Heritage of Humanity. After the performance, grab a drink at one of the city’s rooftop bars—16 Roof and 360 Istanbul both have unforgettable views.
