3 Days in Auckland for First Timers

Curated by Zoë Smithwho spent a year living and working near Auckland.

I first visited Auckland as a new immigrant to New Zealand in the 1990s, a teen transplant from urban England to rural New Zealand. Back then, the contrast between big, bustling Auckland and the small farming town I’d come to call home was stark.

That difference is still stark. Auckland is many travelers’ first port of call in New Zealand, and it couldn’t be more different from the rest of the country—even the other big cities. But that’s part of Auckland’s appeal: It’s a cultural and culinary powerhouse that does its own thing, no matter what other Kiwis say about it (and they say quite a lot!). Here’s what to do with three days in the City of Sails.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a stroll in the Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter.

Auckland is cool and wet in winter (June–August), warm and wet in summer (December–February), and the rest of the year is also wet—bring an umbrella.

Day 1

On day one, focus on the downtown area to get your bearings in Auckland. A walking or biking tour is a good way to begin. Start with breakfast at the Auckland Fish Market in the Wynyard Quarter, then stroll through the Viaduct Harbour, admiring the yachts and superyachts.

In the afternoon, stroll up Queen Street to the Sky Tower. Admire the views from the observation deck, or test your fear of heights with a bungee jump. Alternatively, walk further to the Auckland Domain, an expansive park containing the excellent hilltop Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Day 2

Hit the water this morning and explore some of central Auckland’s outer areas. Take a ferry to the North Shore suburb of Devonport, where there are upmarket cafés and boutiques, and great city views. An active alternative is to get the ferry over to Rangitoto Island, a large dormant volcano, and hike to its summit.

If the weather’s warm, spend the afternoon out on the water: The city beach Cheltenham Beach is conveniently close to Devonport, while Mission Bay Beach is more central and good for swimming or kayaking. Or, for a more adventurous option, you end the day on a kayak tour that ventures further into Waitemata Harbour as the sun sets.

Day 3

Get out of Auckland today and see some of the countryside while staying within the city limits. Drive or take a tour out west through the vineyards around Kumeu, which are a great place to stop for a leisurely lunch with a glass of wine or two.

Continue on to Muriwai Beach, where there’s a frenetic clifftop gannet colony. Then head to the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park and beloved black-sand Piha Beach for some surfing or hiking to beautiful waterfalls. This is a great way to end three days in Auckland.
