Awesome Waterfalls Hike
Our excursion operator arranged our meeting point at the port and we were easily able to locate them upon arrival. Our shuttle driver, Andy, was very polite and helpful and drove us to and from the trailhead. The hike to the waterfalls was about 45 minutes but was pretty easy because there wasn't a lot of elevation change. The waterfalls were beautiful and it was fun sliding down the waterfall into the pool of water at the bottom. The guides on the hike did a great job ensuring everyone's safety as folks jumped from the waterfall or slid down. On the drive back to the port, Andy took us by a restaurant where ate a delicious authentic Dominican Republic lunch. Would highly recommend this excursion!

Monkeys are always fun!
If you like interacting with animals, this is good fun. Our tour company sent a SMS the night before, that the waterfalls were closed due to high rains. They provided several alternatives, including a full refund or partial refund with other activities. And they refunded punctually. Clean, newish, good vans. On time. 20+ minutes to Monkeys; were in a large, informal outdoor enclosure. These Squirrel Monkey are not native here, mostly they are rescued pets or bred in captivity. Their handlers fed them in ways that encouraged them to clamber over you. Totally cute and delightful if you like that sort of thing. Relaxed and fun. No place for Germaphobes...you will have a monkey eating nuts on your head.. They have a shop selling local cigars, art, rum coffee, all in a low key manner (no hard selling). After too short a time (20 or 30 minutes?) back to port. The city is pretty hardscrabble: an overview (used to be a cable care and a plane crash over there) and half a block of tourist shops swarming with tourist police, tshirts, cocktails, etc. We were taken to a small modern chocolate factory that produces small batch, all organic chocolates. A short interesting overview, hands on workshop tour and - thankfully lowkey - option to purchase chocolate products. Tour guide altered route to let us walk back along the Malecon (seafront beach walk), which, while it felt safe enough, was a depressing lesson in the local mentality of littering and pollution; kids bathing in mounds of bottle, trash and flotsam. No indepth historical, cultural, ethnic perspecitives or education, but clean, responsible, functional. And the monkeys were enchanting..

Great Driver
Our goal was to enjoy a scenic ride through Portugal and learn a little bit about the history. However, our driver Goncalo was a wealth of knowledge. He gave us a full deep explanation of the history and background of every site we saw and the history of Portugal. It made the trip extremely educational as well as fun. We felt fortunate to have had him as our guide. .

This was an absolute blast, and by far my boyfriend and I’s favorite excursion we did. There was a bit of a hike up to the waterfalls (you must go up to be able to come down haha!) but there were plenty of spots to rest along the way. The guides were super great, and helpful, and they provided us helmets, life jackets, and bottled water. The natural water slides were SO much fun, and you go pretty quickly down them. The last waterfall you get to, you can either jump (about 18ft), slide down (with about a 6 foot drop), or climb down the stairs. My boyfriend and I chose to jump and it was SO much fun! While we both know how to swim, there were guides in the water helping pull us out of other people’s way as others made their way down the slides / jump. This is definitely something I would do again!

As the Dominican Republic’s oldest city, you might think Puerto Plata excursions all revolve around history—but that couldn’t be further from the truth. While plenty of options delve into the past at the 16th-century fortress, many showcase the lush natural landscapes of the island. Tackle rugged terrain on an ATV adventure, go horseback riding on trails leading to waterfalls, feel your adrenaline levels soar during ziplines, and then cool off during snorkeling trips and sunset catamaran cruises.
