Crete is renowned for being a divinely sun-baked Greek Island, boasting great beaches and hot weather—but it’s less known for its spectacular White Mountains (Lefka Ori). Found in the west of the island, the mountains are a paradise for hikers and nature spotters when not dusted with snow in winter and early spring.

Spread across three hills overlooking the crescent-shaped Mirabello Bay, Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque and cosmopolitan seaside resort. By day, visitors flock to the beaches, while at night, patrons fill chic waterfront restaurants and bars in the harbor and Voulismeni Lake—connected to the harbor via a narrow channel.

Located on Crete’s northern coast and framed by a backdrop of looming mountains, the history port city of Chania is one of the island’s most picturesque destinations. Chania’s Old Town is its greatest draw, with its labyrinth of cobblestone lanes, scenic seafront promenade, and beautifully preserved Venetian, Turkish, and Jewish quarters.

The fortress-like Arkadi Monastery (Moni Arkadiou) is perched on a hilltop plateau surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, while Crete’s highest peak, Mt. Ida, looms in the distance. Picturesque and architecturally impressive, with fairy-tale turrets and a dramatic bell tower, the monastery is also a symbol of the Cretan struggle for independence.

Comprising two sandy stretches extending from either side of a pier, Marathi Beach overlooks the vivid blue waters of Souda Bay and the White Mountains of Chania. The beach is well sheltered from the elements, meaning the waters are waveless and calm. Traditional tavernas near the sand serve fresh fish to hungry beachgoers.

Crete is renowned for its many beautiful beaches, and many consider Preveli Palm Beach the very best of them all. Located on the island’s southern coast, the beach sits in front of the limestone cliffs of the Kourtaliotiko gorge and is framed by a lush palm forest.

Go for a stroll along the 16th-century walls in Heraklion, the capital city of Crete, to get a sense of the island’s Venetian history. The walls were constructed during the time of Venetian rule over Crete, and they withstood a 21-year siege of the city by the Ottomans. Seven bastions and four gates make up the massive fortifications.

Once a clubhouse for Venetian nobility, the 17th-century Palladian-style Loggia is now home to Heraklion Town Hall. Designed by Francesco Morosini, it is one of the best examples of Venetian architecture in the city. Visitors come to roam its covered walkway and courtyard.

Set in Chania’s Firkas Fortress, the Maritime Museum of Crete (sometimes translated as the Nautical Museum of Crete) takes a deep dive into Crete’s nautical history with models of ships from prehistoric boats to modern-day destroyers and landing craft, as well as ancient navigational instruments and other seafaring artifacts.

Located in northern Crete, Amazonas Park is a small, privately-funded animal park and rescue center focused on the conservation of endangered wildlife. In addition to domestic and local animals such as donkeys and goats, Amazonas Parks also features animals from South America, including parrots and monkeys.

Cretaquarium (Thalassokosmos, or “sea world” in Greek, Crete's gleaming white sea aquarium, is the largest in Greece. Showcasing the fascinating fish and marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea, the aquarium is home to roughly 2,500 fish from more than 250 indigenous species, ranging from sand tiger sharks to microscopic sea horses.

The peaceful, incredibly photogenic village of Spili sits nestled in the foothills of Crete’s Psiloritis mountains, at the base of Mt. Vorizis. Small enough to comfortably stroll around, Spili is home to an interesting folklore museum and three picturesque churches. Nearby are olive groves, caves, and fields of wildflowers to explore.

Archaeology buffs can trace Crete’s history from the Neolithic and Minoan to late Roman times at the Archaeological Museum of Chania, thanks to its collection of treasures found during excavations around the town and across western Crete. Located in the historic Church of St. Francis, the museum is a highlight of Chania’s old town.

CretAquarium (Thalassocosmos) takes visitors on a trip through the Mediterranean, from its seabeds to the coastal habitats of the Greek Islands. Visitors young and old come to take in a variety of sea life on display, everything from stingrays and octopus to jellyfish and clownfish.

The Aptera archaeological site is home to the ruins of a powerful ancient city founded in Minoan times. From its strategic position above Souda Bay, the city thrived for millennia before being brought down by invasions and earthquakes. Today, visitors can explore the remains of a fortified tower, a city gate and wall, an amphitheater, and a temple.

Expand your knowledge about local history in Crete during a visit to Malia, once a thriving Minoan city with an impressive palace complex. The small site is home to excavations that reveal fascinating details, such as a luxurious bath, but Malia today is perhaps best known for the resorts and Ibiza-style nightlife of neighboring Malia town.

Founded in 1953, Heraklion’s Historical Museum of Crete highlights events and artifacts from Crete’s varied past. Displaying priceless frescos, traditional Cretan costumes, and a model of Heraklion as it looked in the 17th century, the museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of the island.

Just a short drive from the beaches of Heraklion, Acqua Plus Water Park is the largest and most popular water park in Crete. With more than 50 different slides, games, and activities, the park has plenty to do for all ages and preferences, from daring water slides to a scenic lazy-river cruise.

Broad white sands gently slope into warm shallow waters at Frangokastello Beach. Despite its brochure-worthy beauty, the beach is relatively laid-back, with its remoteness partly to thank for the lack of large-scale development. An imposing Venetian castle—local lore declares it haunted—guards the spacious strand from its clifftop perch.

Discover a historic landmark dating back to the 1370s during a visit to Frangokastello, a well-preserved castle. Built by the Venetians when their empire ruled Crete, this fort is known for its sawtooth walls and square towers at each corner. Nearby beaches are also a draw for visitors, and the small town offers peaceful seaside accommodations.

Measuring just 4.35 miles (7 kilometers) long and 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) at its widest point, Chrissi Island, also known as Gaidouronisi, is small but undoubtedly lovely. This protected nature reserve off Crete’s south coast is blessed with pristine beaches, shallow snorkel-friendly waters, and swaths of old cedar forest.

Chania’s most popular water park, Limnoupolis Water Park (Aqua Creta Limnoupolis) offers 11 large slides, including steep “free-fall” options, plus a lazy river, a kids’ pool with smaller slides, and a big central pool with a zipline. The park also has sun loungers, a bar, a restaurant, fast-food options, and a minimart.

Part of the Star Beach resort complex, this 4-acre (1.5-hectare water park sits directly on the waterfront and offers up family-friendly fun in a festive environment on the island of Crete. With adventurous water slides, a relaxing lazy river, and plenty of activities for tots, the Star Beach Water Park offers an ideal beach break.

A compact water park with a varied range of slides, Watercity Water Park is located midway between Heraklion and Hersonissos. Slides include a long, slow “Crazy River” raft ride, a boomerang ride, a vortex-style slide, a Tarzan swing, and more. You can also enjoy a wave pool, a lazy river, two children’s pools, and a selection of children’s slides.

Seitan Limania may translate to “Devil’s Port,” but whoever named this spectacular beach simply wanted it to themselves. With white sand that emerges out of a narrow, S-shaped canyon and slowly dips into bright-blue waters, Seitan Limania is one of Crete’s most beautiful beaches. It does require a bit of a hike, but don’t let that stop you from witnessing this gem.

One of Crete’s most beautiful beaches, Falassarna Beach (sometimes spelled Falasarna) is technically several beaches in one. Rolling for roughly 2 miles (3 kilometers), this long stretch of golden-pink sand veers from rocky dunes to ancient ruins and back again. Whether you’re looking to beach comb, windsurf, or take in the sunset, Falassarna rarely disappoints.

Douloufakis Winery is a third-generation family-owned winery, which produces traditional Cretan and international wines in the rolling hills south of Heraklion. They make more than 20 different wines—more than most Cretan wineries—including sparkling and sweet styles. Some wines are exported internationally, while their vintages have won awards.

Lassithi Plateau is one of the coolest places you’ve likely never heard of. The birthplace of Zeus, this high, hilly region of Crete has immense importance to Cretan (and Greek) culture. Here, visitors find quaint, modern villages that have been thriving for thousands of years—and archaeological sites that date back to Europe’s first civilization.

Set in the rolling hills of Crete’s Peza wine region, Domaine Paterianakis is a family-owned organic vineyard. The sisters who run it produce both natural and traditional wines, as well as tsikoudia, Crete’s answer to grappa. The winery and cellars are open to the public, while the glass-walled tasting room and restaurant offers sweeping views across the vines.

Perched in the mountains with sweeping views along a gorge, Kera Kardiotissa Monastery is one of Crete’s most important monasteries. It’s known for its 14th-century frescoes and revered icon of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus near to her heart. Despite its heritage as a monastery, it is nuns, rather than monks, who live in the complex today.
