The southernmost of Mauritius’ nine districts, the scenic Savanne District is known for its rugged, unspoiled scenery, idyllic beaches, and several major cultural attractions. However, it’s worth venturing to inland natural wonders like the Black River Gorges National Park.

The Seven Coloured Earth Geopark is known for its multicolored sand dunes formed by unique volcanic terrain. Chamarel Waterfall, the tallest single-drop cascade on Mauritius, is another highlight of the park.

The Bois Cheri Plantation has been producing tea in southern Mauritius since 1892. Spread out over around 617 acres (250 hectares), the plantation comprises fields, a production facility, and a museum where visitors can learn about tea from the source.

On the southernmost part of Mauritius, Gris Gris Cape is a beautiful—but treacherous—spot where the land meets the sea. Here, you can take in views of water crashing up against the "Roche Qui Pleure" (French for “the crying rock”), named as such because the violent waters make it look like it is, indeed, weeping.

Dedicated to conserving Mauritius’ indigenous forest and endangered wildlife, the Ebony Forest Reserve is one of the island’s most important ecoreserves. Home to more than 140 native and endemic plant and animal species, it’s a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, with scenic hiking trails and ocean-view overlooks.

A historical landmark and a working rum distillery, Mauritius’ St. Aubin House & Sugar Estate links the island’s colonial past to its contemporary present. Centered on an 1819 plantation house with National Heritage Site status, the estate teaches visitors about rum history and production, hosts tastings, and welcomes diners to its traditional restaurant.
