Founded in the 10th centuary, Honfleur with Its narrow cobbled streets are lined with architecture from the middles ages up to the present day. Today, these buildings house an array of boutiques, gifts shops and restaurants. Honfleur is also noted for its art galleries and was the home town of impressionist painter Eugène Boudin (1824-1898). A museum dedicated to him, which is home to many of his works and those of his contemporary’s is to be found in the town today. In the afternoon the tour moves to the back country of Honfleur, the Pays d’Auge. Here we will visit a domaine for a guided tour exploring how the local spirit Calvados is made.. On June 6th at6.30 am American troops landed on Utah and Omaha beaches as part of Operation Neptune, step one in the allied effort to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. The first part of this operation involved the U.S 82nd Airborne Division taking control of the strategic town of Sainte-Mère-Eglise, the first stop of this tour. From there the tour continues to Utah Beach where 23 500 American soldiers lander on D-day. After a stop for lunch the first stop in the afternoon is La Pointe du Hoc, where members of the 2nd Battalion of the United States Rangers succeed, despite the odds being stacked against them in taking control of a major German artillery position. The second stop of the afternoon is Omaha Beach, the bloodiest of the five allied landing beaches, where the 1st and 29th divisions of the American Army disembarked. The tour finishes at United States Military Cemetery in Collville-sur-Mer, the final resting place of 9 387 American servicewomen & men.

In the early hours of the morning of the 6th of June 1944, 260 of the 2nd Battalion of the United States Rangers, stormed the headland with its 90 foot cliffs. Their mission, to capture and silence the German artillery battery of 6 long range guns that posed a significant threat to the American landing beaches, the remains of which can still be viewed today. A short drive from La Pointe du Hoc, is the tour’s 2nd stop, Omaha Beach. Here on D-day 33 000 American soldiers landed, the largest number of men to land on any of the 5 D-day landing beaches. An operation which unfortunately turned out to be the most costliest in terms of lives lost on D-day. The tour finishes rather poignantly at the US Military Cemetery at the eastern end of Omaha. This Cemetery is by far the largest of the 25 military cemeteries in Normandy from the 2nd World War and is a fitting tribute to the 9 387 servicemen buried there.
