Driver arrived on time in a new vehicle to take us smoothly and safely to Gubei. Town was amazing and worth seeing. The Great Wall when lit up at night was a special sight and well
worth the experience. Highly recommended.

Wonderful private tour day trip from Beijing to the Great Wall!
Our Guide Tony and driver Mr Zhang, were both excellent…the ride from Beijing was smooth, and Tony was very knowledgeable with commentary of Beijing’s history and the Great Wall. Tony stayed with us the whole time, was great company too!
Definitely a great private tour that is highly recommended!

A great experience
We had Wanghui as our driver on the night visit to Simatai Great Wall and Gubei Water Town Private tour from Beijing and he was fantastic. Wanghui was professional, dealing with the tickets, providing helpful advice and communication was easy through translation apps. As we finished quite late he even brought us to an amazing local restaurant for a delicious dinner after our time at Gubei Town. I would highly recommend him and this tour as a great opportunity to see the Wall all lit up at night overlooking the bright lights of the town below.

Good day trip and guide
Great day trip from Beijing to cover the Simatai Great Wall and Gubei Water Town, and the driver Peter Wu was very helpful and accommodating. One thing to note (which wasn't clear at the time I booked) is that entry fees aren't included in the price, so budget an additional CNY 300 per person

Greatest Great Wall Watertown
Amazing little trip! Our driver Ryan was safe, speedy, and polite. He gave us good travel advice and some excellent suggestions for eating dinner after the trip.
Gubei Wtown, as they call themselves in English, was absolutely delightful. As a resort styled after an ancient town, it was both convenient, charming, and peppered with cats and cat drawings. Included in that is a giant balloon of a drunken cat that fell asleep on a wall, pretty funny!
The Simatai Great Wall area was just awesome, in the most literal sense of the word. The cable car ride up is a great view, and once you reach the wall you feel like you’re at the top of the Earth. The sense of windswept peace and heavy history is a mood one must experience to appreciate.
Overall, fantastic, strong 5/5.

We had an amazing time...
We had an amazing time both in the town and at the great wall. Our driver was polite and friendly. When we arrived, we spent about 2 hours in the town because there is so much to see. Lots of shops restaurants and it is scenic and beautiful. We loved the great wall. But you only need 1 hour or so up there. That means there is ample time to explore the town (you must!). You can also take the cable car which was a gorgeous ride up the mountain. We took a boat ride to get to the cable car. Everything is self explanatory and easy.

If you are traveling...
If you are traveling solo, I highly recommend doing a private tour with David of possible. He is very friendly and attentive. He also good at reading the room and will let you rest/have quiet time.
Bring cash - at least 130 yen for the boat tour and shuttle bus to get through the city.
My tour was in late March and at night so it was pretty chilly. The hike up to the wall will warm you up but you will definitely need a jacket for the boat ride through the water town. I wore a beanie and didn't regret it.

The best view of the Great Wall for sure
David did such a great job and we are deeply grateful he was our first guide coming to China. We ran into some issues with our hotel room and he waited patiently for us. The water town at sunset was quiet and relaxing and the views from the Cable Car are amazing. The climb was steep and uneven but David waited for us and helped is with every section of the Wall. The views of the sunset in the Wall and water town are priceless. And even when he was not allowed into the row boat, he let us in and he walked all the way back by himself. The food was delicious and I am afraid that our first Hot Pot meal has ruined every other because it was so good! We were dropped back at our hotel which makes this trip so convenient if you are physically able to do it. No huge crowds getting in the way of your photos, it truly feels like you are back in time.

When to visit

Photographers and Instagrammers who won’t be visiting Shanghai or Suzhou may appreciate Gubei Water Town.
If staying overnight, check your hotel’s location carefully. Some are a bus ride away from the scenic area.
A few vendors will only take Chinese mobile payment systems (WeChat or AliPay), but you can load cash onto a card and use that instead.
Cobbles, steps, and arched bridges make Gubei Water Town challenging for travelers who use wheelchairs.
