- This is a self-guiduided driving tour. Transportation and a driver are not included, so you’ll need your own vehicle or rental car.
- Choose from six designated starting points. Navigate to the starting point that best fits your route before beginning; GPS-guided tour directions will start once you reach the tour route.
- Download the Shaka Guide app after booking. Use the redemption code provided in your confirmation to access your tour.
- Download the tour over strong Wi-Fi before you go. Once downloaded, the audio and map work offline.
- The itinerary is flexible. Stops and hikes are recommendations, not requirements. Skip stops, shorten or extend your visit, and customize the day based on your interests and schedule.
- Hiking is optional. Some recommended trails range from easy walks to more strenuous hikes, so choose activities appropriate for your group and current conditions.
- Accessibility varies by stop. Because this is a self-guided tour using your own vehicle, accessibility depends on your vehicle and the locations you choose to visit. Some trails and outdoor stops may not be wheelchair or stroller accessible.
- Bring a fully charged phone. A car charger is recommended for a full-day tour.
- This is a private tour/activity. Only your group will participate

The stories on the audio tour were great, however we found the instructions and route finding confusing. If you don’t know the area at all it may be difficult to remember if you’re going clockwise or counterclockwise which is required for the instructions given in the tour. We wound up missing an entire section. The exit for Sunset was also closed due to construction, this seems like it was going to be a long term closure so this is something to keep in mind.

For future reference, we always recommend following the tour route in chronological order to make sure all the audio triggers seamlessly, but we completely get how easy it is to lose your orientation out there. The narration started out well and we enjoyed it but the tour stopped working in the middle as the navigation integration is not good and we wasted a lot of time trying to get it fixed and since we ended up off track we wasted over an hour. We really enjoyed the road to Hana one for the same company but this tour was not functional so I would not recommend.

Finding the correct shaka app to you proved difficult for me. By the time I did get the correct one, there was no internet connection. So we never got to listen to the tour. I am hoping for a refund. We were able to find a free one through NPS app that worked fine.

The narration was good, but the navigation was lacking. Sometimes it left out steps. For example, it gave directions to enter a park and drive to a grist mill. I then paused the app. When resuming the app, the navigation directions assumed that I left the park. Instead of giving directions from the mill (where it told me to stop and pause the app), it assumed that I had returned to the park entrance and gave directions from there. Similar issues occurred at other stops.
